First time I ever saw SYL live was on their first visit to Australia. They played thru their entire set in under an hour, said they would take a short break then play the "supercharged" version of a few songs. Started playing the same set from the top and fuck me they turned it up to 11. Maybe 12, blew me away.
"City" IS Strapping Young Lad. Quite possibly one of the best lineups you will ever see in metal. Absolutely fucking solid. Devin Townsend is definitely one of the better musicians out there these days, but with SYL he had an incredible band behind him.
Music like this keeps inspiring me to play my guitar. I love how he sings too. He can sing yet make it sound so harsh. Devin's definitely my favourite voice in metal.
i saw these guys back in november at the old Reverb in Toronto for 5 dollars in 98. the best 5 dollars i spent and i think i will ever spend in my life.
@Dungarth Haha, yeah, this IS, in general, more complex than any grunge out there... but c'mon, who have doens't listened ever of Nirvana? everyone who has born 'til 95 knows about it!... and I wish that the same happened with Strapping Young Lad u.u
City or Alien?? This song is fucking amazing especially at 2.55...which reminds me of Fear Factory alot of respect for Hoglan \m/\m/ How Did I Get Here Tonight? What Am I Doing Here? How Did I Reach This State? How Did I Lose My Sight? I'm Lost ... I'm Freaking And Everybody Knows ... Everyone's Watching ...So Here's All My Hopes And Aspirations Nothing But Puke God, im So Lonely...
Devin sometimes changes the lyrics in the booklet, i can't understand why. I need to know the song version of Velvet Kevrokian; somebody could help me?
I remember I saw this video in MTV show called Superock in summer of 1997 and I instantly fell in love with this song. Really chaotic and catchy industrial thrash metal with influences from Fear Factory (one favorite band from my youth years).
The other songs in City -album are not as good as this one. Too bad.
@bitchesfallhard7 It's hard to mosh on your own, isn't it? :( I did it once at the bus stop, but no one else could hear my music, so I was just the asshole running into other people.
Not to take anything away from the song as a whole, but the chorus here definitely steals the show. One of the most melodically unique choruses I've ever heard. Unique, and very urban-sounding. In fact, as far as rock music goes, I'd say only Confusion Is Sex-era Sonic Youth sound as urban as this.
back in the days when i was drunk in the city i used to here this a lot, does it still, But i must admit that i´ m unfortunately has been a bigger fan! it sounds like i´ m an oldie, haha i´ m only nineteen:P Hail to all the madness their songs contains. Hell yeah!
Oh my fuckin god this song really does get better everytime you hear it I never get bored of the crushing sound, City is a metal masterpiece, if you think otherwise, go drown your ears in all that Alexis on fire wank you listen to!
Im sorry friend there is a huge misunderstanding, I didnt mean Alexi Laiho, I meant the Canadian band "Alexisonfire", have you heard of them? They are a really shit band, ofcourse Alexi Laiho is a god on guitar I wasnt talking about him.
i concure with what was said ^ above. AOF sucks COB rocks *seen cob live \m/ woot* its said to say that aof is canadian it brings the canadian music sceen down. but since syl is canadian and all that brings Canadian music up to a point where one or two shitfuck bands cant bring it down.
SYL ZH Annihilator 3 inches of blood. just to name a few. rock on us Canadians!
completely concur.......and bands who have been around for awhile are breaking new ground with their evolution....Machine Head being my most significant example....and 3 inches of blood does funny things to my soul, Deadly Sinners is a video I show off alot.
