  • First time I ever saw SYL live was on their first visit to Australia. They played thru their entire set in under an hour, said they would take a short break then play the "supercharged" version of a few songs. Started playing the same set from the top and fuck me they turned it up to 11. Maybe 12, blew me away.

  • I thought fat people was useless...

Then I saw Gene Hoglan live.

  • 0:47 I´ve got a peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeenis!

  • SYL is metal!

  • City is just amazing

  • This song embodies the spirit of true metal

  • SYL is heavier than americans

  • why on the album booklet are all the lyrics different from the songs?

  • @BeyondLame because you have the wrong booklet

  • We need a new album DEV

  • its i hate you all!!

  • this song kills!

  • Does anyone here know what the lyrics to the repeated choir part is? The part that sounds vaguely like "Hey! You're low!"

  • @ProtestinDminor ~ I thought it was either hey come on or hey you know, not too sure

  • @ProtestinDminor Hey, you mo. (homo) ;p

  • @ProtestinDminor How Did I Get Here Tonight?

    What Am I Doing Here?

How Did I Reach This State?

How Did I Lose My Sight?

    I'm Lost ... I'm Freaking

And Everybody Knows ... Everyone's Watching

...So Here's All My Hopes And Aspirations

    Nothing But Puke

    God, I'm So Lonely...

  • THIS IS AWESOME!!!!!

  • First song from SYL I ever heard , and totally one of my favourite songs of all time !

  • First time i heard this, it just blew me away. Thought it was the angriest thing i'd ever heard.

All these years later...... it still sounds pretty near the top.

  • "Play that stupid piece of shit!"

"City" IS Strapping Young Lad. Quite possibly one of the best lineups you will ever see in metal. Absolutely fucking solid. Devin Townsend is definitely one of the better musicians out there these days, but with SYL he had an incredible band behind him.

  • try the somng "moment of impact" by Fear Factory

  • @86kinky86 Ah come on.., I know Fear factory has some good songs, but nobody can compete with the energy of SYL.. Nobody has the power.

  • @sybow I know but it's not always about pure power, is it? But I agree eith what you say.

  • @86kinky86 But it is about the power and energy combined.. at least to me. An energic song makes you go wild.

  • Music like this keeps inspiring me to play my guitar. I love how he sings too. He can sing yet make it sound so harsh. Devin's definitely my favourite voice in metal.

  • Honestly... I have never bee so blown away by such an amazing piece of music. Kudos SYL

  • I could have lived without seeing that sick scullet.

  • thanks for this...absolutely sweet and amazing

  • 2:57 is heavy as shit.

  • 0:00-5:38 is godly.

  • i saw these guys back in november at the old Reverb in Toronto for 5 dollars in 98. the best 5 dollars i spent and i think i will ever spend in my life.

  • Still gives me goosebumps after all these years. Devin you rock.

  • fucking... METAL! :D

  • this song is like AWESOME!

  • Probably the most powerful song i have ever heard !!!!!

  • PLAY THAT STUPID PIECE OF SHIT!!!!!!

  • This is only high school bullshit!

  • 2:50 ... nirvana influentiated moment? lol... great song... loved this band!

  • what a horrible thing to say!

  • I highly doubt Devin listened to Nirvana, his lyrics were/are far more complex than Kurt Cobain's.

  • @Dungarth Haha, yeah, this IS, in general, more complex than any grunge out there... but c'mon, who have doens't listened ever of Nirvana? everyone who has born 'til 95 knows about it!... and I wish that the same happened with Strapping Young Lad u.u

  • Gene Hoglan is good, but not compared to Danny Carey..

Still i choose this band over Tool.

  • If you've ever listened to gene hoglan when he was Death, youd say "danny carey is good, but not compared to gene hoglan"

  • @xXtortionXx gene makes carey look like a tool. check some of his other bands, or jazz projects

  • This was Devin coming into greatness. I miss this era. This IS metal.

  • fucking best band ever

  • Ususally I dislike videos this epileptic, but the insanity of the video is perfect for the song. Whole album is the soundtrack to going crazy.

  • im a thrasher! and i like this fukin song! fukin energy!!! ARRRGHHH!

  • @HUNRainmaker WHEN THE NUCLEAR FALLOUT COMES UPON EARTH, IM GONNA CRACK MY LAST BEER AND LISTEN TO THIS FUCKING SONG

  • gene Hoglan... a brilliant drummer.

  • Gets my whole body banging to this. Fucking huge sound, big time.

    Epic!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the drummer looks like a cool muthafucker

  • The best metal band in existence.

    Deconstruction coming soon.

  • Holy crap... Devin with hair... sorta.

  • love that blast

  • I can't understand what the fuck this guy is saying, but this song makes me hyped for a fight man!

  • their best music

  • this band has it's own genre... it's called awesomeness in a bottle(i wanna drink that shit)

  • agreed

  • @76sasquatch true but most ppl label it as progressive death metal

  • @deathmaster666death lol yeah i know. but i think devin townsend just kind of stands on his own like arjen lucassen from ayreon. pure amazingness

  • I think I must admit that after FF's Obsolete SYL surpassses them. Well let's see what Burton, Dino and Gene make with the new Fear Factory.

  • most powerfull

  • HEY YOU MO

    HEY YOU MO

    HEY YOU MO

    HEY YOU MO

  • It's "Hey, you know / Hey, you blow" according to Dev.

  • god i love devy :D...strapping is a fucking awesome band

  • Comment removed

  • Awesome, just awesome \m/

  • why does everyone keep calling this band death metal it sounds nothing like it

  • No matter the genre, it's awesome.

  • industrial metal, like ministry on speed :D

  • Devin pwns death metal

  • It is simply known as "Devy metal"

  • Best song in the world! F..k everything else!!!

  • It says " Hey you Mo' " (Mo' is a moron abreviation) Townsend himself said it, check his official forum.

  • Thanks for clearing that up. I always thought it was "Hey get low".

  • Considering the song's subject matter, I always thought it was "Take him home"

  • I could be some stuff like:

    'hey, you know'

    'hey, kill em all'

    'hey, get em all'

but militantOldLady might just be right...

  • from what I've hear live it sounds like "Hey you know, hey you blow"

  • epic

  • \,,/

  • god its a fucking monster

  • Best album they did!!!

  • what do they all say before "Ive got a feeling"?

  • sounds to me like "hey get low"

  • all hail Devy!!

  • This band destroys all false metal!!!!!Makes me wanna smash things into oblivion!lol!!!!!!!

  • City or Alien?? This song is fucking amazing especially at 2.55...which reminds me of Fear Factory alot of respect for Hoglan \m/\m/ How Did I Get Here Tonight? What Am I Doing Here? How Did I Reach This State? How Did I Lose My Sight? I'm Lost ... I'm Freaking And Everybody Knows ... Everyone's Watching ...So Here's All My Hopes And Aspirations Nothing But Puke God, im So Lonely...
  • "God, i'm so lonely". Did you know that in the cd booklet it says "God it's so lonely"? Although it definately sounds like "i'm" to me.

  • Devin sometimes changes the lyrics in the booklet, i can't understand why. I need to know the song version of Velvet Kevrokian; somebody could help me?

  • just google it :p

  • even on google there's only the booklet version. whatever, nevermind

  • huh thats odd..... here ya go clancy^^^

  • cheers big ears

  • Fucking brutal \m/

  • I remember I saw this video in MTV show called Superock in summer of 1997 and I instantly fell in love with this song. Really chaotic and catchy industrial thrash metal with influences from Fear Factory (one favorite band from my youth years).

The other songs in City -album are not as good as this one. Too bad.

  • makes you wanna start a mosh pit in your living room

  • @bitchesfallhard7 It's hard to mosh on your own, isn't it? :( I did it once at the bus stop, but no one else could hear my music, so I was just the asshole running into other people.

  • only 25,000 views.......SYL deserves way more then that....just show you how the would feels about real music

  • Man, don't care about views.

This video has 5 stars! SYL deserves way more than that!

  • fucking overwhelming!!!

  • sick, sick, SICK Band! o_o

  • BRING BACK SYL YOU DUMB FUCKS

  • Not to take anything away from the song as a whole, but the chorus here definitely steals the show. One of the most melodically unique choruses I've ever heard. Unique, and very urban-sounding. In fact, as far as rock music goes, I'd say only Confusion Is Sex-era Sonic Youth sound as urban as this.

  • i've got a feeeliiiing :))))),SYL rullez :)))

  • back in the days when i was drunk in the city i used to here this a lot, does it still, But i must admit that i´ m unfortunately has been a bigger fan! it sounds like i´ m an oldie, haha i´ m only nineteen:P Hail to all the madness their songs contains. Hell yeah!

  • HOLY FUCK i love this band....honestly one of the best bands in the world....top ten

  • Straight to my favourites.

  • PLAY THAT STUPID PIECE OF SHIT!!!!!

  • I envy their drummer so much...

  • Hoglan is the best!!!!!!!

  • fuck i now eh

  • So so so fucking good. This right here reminds me of why I listen to metal.

  • 2:40 - 3:56

  • I love that part too. This is so beautiful song!

  • this part touches me deep inside.

    wise choice

  • God the way Devin sings on this song is so insane and full of emotion! Heartshaking!

  • i love SYL,

and i mean that in the most brutal of ways

  • Τα σπάει... γαμάει...

This is one of the heaviest songs ever...

    And that voice....

    Big Respect from Greece...

  • Put this song on in the morning, and I'm ready for anything. I love blaring this as I'm driving to school/work in the mornings.

  • Heaviest song ever

  • its up there with messhugah's rational gaze.

  • instead classic!

  • classic syl tune

  • reminds me of going to uni with this blaring out of my headphones.

love the weird high singing bit

"i was warned, absolutely numb....no goood around peeepole, everyone knows and waaatcchhes me!"

    love it

  • City is a fucking amazing album from start to finish. No argument.

  • I don't listen to much metal anymore, but this is a prime example of beautiful brutality.

  • Oh my fuckin god this song really does get better everytime you hear it I never get bored of the crushing sound, City is a metal masterpiece, if you think otherwise, go drown your ears in all that Alexis on fire wank you listen to!

  • Fuck you your saying Alexi boring but you like new in flames.

  • ROFL

He meant Alex is on fire.

    Shitty band.

  • I'm sorry its just that I got kind of pissed you were talking shit about one of my favorite guitarists.

  • Im sorry friend there is a huge misunderstanding, I didnt mean Alexi Laiho, I meant the Canadian band "Alexisonfire", have you heard of them? They are a really shit band, ofcourse Alexi Laiho is a god on guitar I wasnt talking about him.

  • Yeah and I kind of jumped to conclusions also sorry.

  • i concure with what was said ^ above. AOF sucks COB rocks *seen cob live \m/ woot* its said to say that aof is canadian it brings the canadian music sceen down. but since syl is canadian and all that brings Canadian music up to a point where one or two shitfuck bands cant bring it down.

SYL ZH Annihilator 3 inches of blood. just to name a few. rock on us Canadians!

  • completely concur.......and bands who have been around for awhile are breaking new ground with their evolution....Machine Head being my most significant example....and 3 inches of blood does funny things to my soul, Deadly Sinners is a video I show off alot.

  • indeed to both posts above.

  • youtube cannot do justice to the production even!

  • 2:55 - 3:56 one of the best parts in history of this somekind of chaos-metal history!

    addicted to it!

  • Listen to Flattening of Emotions by Death

    Spread and support metal!

  • Heck Yes! anything by Death.

  • Sounds great!!

    Thank you!!

  • Play that stupid piece of shit! Goddamn power rush this song, listen to it during rushhour, people will MOVE

  • what is Devin saying at the beginning of the song?

  • pure fucking metal....yeaaaaaaaaahh

  • The memories this song brings.

  • I love it that drummer is a big dude and can move that fast thats fucking insane!

  • i fucking luv this i mean cmon you can not like this shit

  • fookin awesome

  • Eeeek, the audio is way off.

  • tasty
