Yes, I know Soviet skating evolved through the years, but most of it had only been the difficulty of jumps, throws and lifts. The artistry, choreography, speed and smooth skating was always the same until the 90's. Today's routines are just hideous, slow and unpleasant to watch. The routines before 2010 were just a little better, but it was obvious that Russians were going to hit rock bottom sooner or later and they did in this past Olympics! That was the real horror show, lady!

I t's great to see this on youtube and it has long been a favourite vid of mine to dig out. If you ever needed an example of what made Rodnina so amazing this HAS to be it. The POWER in her skating, just OMG. I can never get bored of watching her because each time I do, I'm just knocked out by how fabulous she was.

She WAS the greatest in Pair Skating! Gordeeva had good moves and elements but she had nothing on Rodnina. Rodnina was a woman, not some stick thin 14 year old.

ANYONE could lift an 80 lb. child. Rodnina was filled out the way a WOMAN/LADY SHOULD BE.

Huh... Rodnina was not that tall and heavy. Zaitsev was taller than Irina and if she would have been just a little bit more taller and "filled out," then he would had more problems lifting her up. You are not giving enough credit to Gordeeva because being "easily" lift and throw is one thing, but being able to land throws and single jumps is another one. Also, she was capable to skate really fast and beautifully so it was no all about the "easy" lifts and throws.

Gordeeva grew up into a fine WOMAN and Grinkov was still capable to lift her and throw her just like he did in the past years and of course they had troubles with her body change, but they were capable to adapt and skate even better than before and prove everyone that both of them were strong.

I would say that it's the man strength and height that makes the difference in pair skating not the woman. Zaitsev proved that with Irina and Grinkov with older Gordeeva.

Rodnina is the greatest in pair skating like you said, but I don't think you can fairly compare both of them since they skated in different times and with different styles. If G&G would have competed in the 70's, then only then Gordeeva's height and weight would have been a huge difference since back then pair skating was more about lifts than throws and jumps.

@littlepichan Good grief!Even if Rodnina and Gordeeva had skated during the same era,Rodnina still would've won hands down.If she had had to do the throw jumps,she would 've done them and done them well.I don't recall Katia's landings being all that great on throw jumps anyway.R&Z were always perfectly synchronized whereas G&G always had a little bobble where their timing was off-witness the 1994 Olympics and the 1990 Worlds LP was a horror show. You'd never see THAT from Rodnina.

I'm not talking about the new stupid code! I'm talking about the way Russian pairs have changed their style since the 90's. If you think the Russians have been skating with the Soviet style all the way until 2002, then you must be blind. Perhaps it was not completely change, but it was not the same. And yes, I know the 2002 story so you don't have to keep repeating that.

BTW, WTF are you talking about?! Russian figure skating was already changed before 2002! It is clear that the new system is what has ruined Russian figure pair skating! The only thing they need it was to add the fast, smooth, beautiful and synchronized skating of G&G with the difficulty of M&D. But instead they decided to come out with hideous "innovations" that the judges only reward now for their difficulty even though they deserve a big 0 for artistry.

BTW, I saw a horror show with the slow performance of M&D. Easy lifts, slow skating and they remind me of today's horrible Russian pair skating hahaha!

M&D:

1. Ridiculous and "difficult" horrible movements that had nothing to do with the beat of the music.

2. Grabbing the blades.

3. Hideous spins.

5. Bad synchronization.

They were only about difficult jumps and throws and that was it.

Too bad all Russian pairs do the same now... maybe that’s the reason why Russia sucks now.
