Now the trippy thing to think about is this, at the end of the movie, God's Filter says not to worry about who he killed, he'll be "seeing them next". So isn't it entirely possible that Mr. Roberts died by chance because the person who died just before him hit the button? There could be a nearly endless cycle.

Think of all the people who die each day from lack of food, or lack of potable water, or lack of the basic medical care that many of us take for granted.
