spetet, cambodia only became a colony of france because the country was in danger of being 'swallowed' by her neighbouring countries (mainly thailand) you say the thais were smarter and avoided being a colony - BUT if it weren't for the french protectorate, cambodia would have never got back some of the provinces thailand took (battambang & siem reap) and further avoided anymore being taken with threat of war.

as for cambodia being better under a king: depended on the century and the king! :-)

@Diosibundo If only the Asian, African countries would wake and stop the infighting, and realize that it only benefits the Western/Eastern powers, decades of war, and these western/eastern powers just sit and wait to implement their policies once the govt is toppled, then bring in their contractors, sign long term leases on economic resources of the countries they say they are helping, and then you have it, cycle continues until the next coup d'etat.
