see, here's my thing. No one, and I mean NO ONE would ever get that this is supposed to be about the vietnam war unless they first read the description saying that it's what it's about. There's no mention of any war in the film. So one could watch it and think anything.
I saw this film on TCM (Turner Classic Movies) once a while back when they ran a Short Films festival. Personally, I don't even think this is as close to as good as what Scorsese did later, but it isn't bad. I don't understand what this has to do with Vietnam, though.
It's an analogy about the futality of the Vietnam War and the blood shed that occured. Just as shaving over and over caused un-needed bloodshed so...did the war...
personally, im not so hot for films that only work as an analogy. films that only make sense as a symbol to something else, not as an entity in itself. it is in a way elitist, because you need to know more than just whats shown on the screen. you gotta be "smart" to get it, not just emotionally involved.
im sure scorsese or any filmmaker would not like somebody going around telling everyone what something is and is not about. its about anything you want it to be or see possibly to be. even if someone, as a filmmaker, never thought of it. thats part of the fun of it.
While for a literal interpretation, i would go for a big irony.. while the ex-soldier gets home in victory.. but he done nothing great but to spill other human being's blood and destroy their lifes.. He does that shave as he still NEEDS some blood.. its all about some morbid gore desire contracted on the war..
i would see things like that: even after the war the sequel remains in your daily basis.. and even in your usual actions there's a resemblance of the violence and blood shed you've once experienced in the war.. and that would be a metaphoric interpretation..
güzel bir senaryo... Vietnam Savaşı hicvedilmiş... ABD Hükümeti ne kadar kendisini temizlemeye kalkarsa o kadar KAN getiriyor heryere... Kahrolsun ABD...

Reinforces my love for the director. Also, this scene appears to have been mocked in Wes Anderson's Royal Tennenbaums. Check it out.

It's not about either of those things. It's about the self-destructive nature of US involvement in the Vietnam War.
