Consider the context of the original opera. The plot can be summarized as "King Alfred Kicks Viking Butt." This comes at the very end where it is announced that the Vikings have been driven out of England and the country is free again--then everyone joins in.

Theres a scene earlier where King Alfred's wife is given a drink of water by a shepherdess, who tells her that her husband & son are also away fighting the Vikings; then they sing a song that one of them is a queen and another a peasant, but when it comes down to it, they are just 2 women worried sick about their men who are off at war. A commonplace now; in 1717 this was a fairly RADICAL sentiment!

Brilliant! Makes me want to wave a Union Jack and shriek Rule, Britannia at the top of my lungs. I'm an 69 year old woman, an American mutt whose English and Welsh forebears came to the colonies in the 1740s, one as a stowaway; others came from France; then Cherokees got into the mix. Hooray for international songfests! Hawksley, members of the orchestra and the audience seemed to be thoroughly enjoying this over-the-top moment.

I love it. A little bit of "Last Night of the Proms" feeling in Potsdam. Even if the singer sings a bit strangely, she has got humour and gives the audience a great show. Just the right thing for that performance.

Well you also lost to farmers with very little supplies and not as big of a army. Not to mention your General was a coward and had his lieutenant surrender for him. before the Declaration of Independents they considered themselves British but the DOI made people think of themselves as a free nation and people started to consider themselves Americans in a sense and their was other people who considered themselves English who were royalist but when the fighting started they considered themselves as Americans. Well i dunno about this geopolotical debate, but this singer is not great. Too much showmanship. Like someone else here said, you also cant understand her words. Expressions are weird.
