Just discovered this singer, Philippe Jaroussky, all I can say is WOW! Never ever heard a voice so pure in that range with great clarity. Thats the trouble when you discover someone so great and rare as this, you just got to have them in your collection! If an angel came to earth he would sing like this. @2batswana The voice of Fairnelli was made by the soprano Ewa Malas Godlewska and the countertenor Derek Lee. They mixed there voices in a computer to "re-create" a castratovoice. The male singer Derek Lee have tescticals.
sorry . it sounds limited. it does not have the power of the female voice. that is because he is using what is called his false chords to make this sound.
being a countertenor or (male soprano for that matter which is even rarer ) and producing high notes are two very different things those high notes are insufferable in 99.9% of cases
I think its more, that he is a countertenor, He is just singing castrato rep. I think. But I don't know, I could be wrong, but either way he is a countertenor, he says himself in one of his interviews. He is one of the few countertenors in the world that can sing the Baroque rep, others can't because even though their voices are high, there is no agility to their voices.
Yeah he's just a counter-tenor not a castrato the last one of those died in 1922 if I remember correctly though there is Radu Marian whose voice never changed due to a hormonal disorder he's had since birth. Radu's voice is that of a castrato which sounds exactly like a little boy.
Voice isn't the only thing that made a Castrato what they were. They had very distinct physical characteristics IRT the way they matured into adulthood. They also got training that allowed them to do what most (all) men and women singers found to be impossible. Their range, their agility, their technique was great (technique = perfect). Castrati could hold notes for a minute or more. Some parts of the Farinelli Il Castrato film were made to duplicate this, where the women fainted :P
A lot of those lines he sang, a Castrato would do without even taking a breath, because of the way their rip cages developed. Their training allowed them superior stamina, agility, and they could do this. There is audio of "The Last Castrato" and people talk about how horrible he was, but they fail to realize that he was not an operatic Castrato. Moreschi was a Church Choir Singer and Soloist. Those audio were purely for historical reasons - he knew we'd ponder what the "voice" was like :P
he's obviosly not a castrato.... i mean... who in this time would cut their child testicules just for hime to be a singer??? i think it'd be consider a crime... and it's actually not necessry because as well as the instruments evolve, so does the human voice, so he's just the bearer of a butiful voice and a very accurate technic, so that's all technic and good taste
@x0x0wnx0x You're right he is not a castrato! The piece he is singing is the story of a Castrato. Just like an actor in a movie playing a murderer is not ACTUALLY a murderer! So he is simply acting the role of a castrato, so to speak. Anyway, hope that clears it up for everyone.
This young man's voice IS angelic & superlatives don't do it justice. Also, I see NOTHING "feminine" or "woman-like" in his voice or performance. The Good Lord saw fit to bless him with a beautiful gift, &, there's nothing that sexually insecure people will ever be able to say or do which will dim the light of Philippe's great gift.
I have to remember that just because the clip features beautiful material, it doesn't mean that everyone who watches it & comments on it have as much class.

oh lord i feel like i have more testosterone than this guy and i'm a girl.... that being said, he's fucking amazing and i am totally in awe, my brain can't accept that that sound is coming out of that man's mouth...
to become a countertenor is not the same as castrato . . . it requires immense amounts of training and vocal exercises as a man enters puberty, and throughout. Today's countertenors should be regarded as just as manly as any other man, they have all their body parts intact.
Oh God! Jaroussky is my favorite counter tenor...I've not much experience in all the male registers but all I know is that I just love his tone color and timbre. His musical articulation is fantastic. Bravo!!!
well originally thats what happened. they castrated boys before puberty so that their voices would be change and therefore remain high like a womans. but i think this guy just has a really really high voice. maybe he aint castrated.
are you serious with your display of flagrant ignorance? they've banned castration of singers since the 19th century. have you no concept of human rights? and have you no sense of history?
am not jumping into conclusions dearie. i am simply stating a fact. castration has been banned for over a century now. men have themselves castrated not because they want to retain their high voice; they do it for the purpose of becoming women. and philippe could not have castrated himself. he would have gone to a surgeon for the procedure :-)
I concur with poopnaama, kakkaface, that this discussion would be nice if it was of music. Not thingking whetter there are men with no balls still out there. I'm fraid that it might actually be the case somewhere. But as it was said that castration as a operation when there is no medical reasons has been illegal for actually centuries. For example Farinelli was castrated becuase "he fell of a horse", which is probably just utter horse dung.
In the first part of the videoclip we can hear that he sings 'sperai vicino al lido' but that is not the song we find in the album. What is this versions? Both have same words but different melodies, can somebody help me to find the introductory version of the clip?
What I mean is that there seems to be a mistake. Who posted wrote that the aria is by Gluck but It is not. I have the CD and the aria of Gluck has a different tune.
I don't really see what the issue is here! Falsetto can be employed as a technique, so it's not insulting to say someone is using it. I might be wrong, but I think counter-tenors generally use a mixture of their head voice and falsetto (not at the same time, obviously) depending on the effect they're trying to achieve. Liking it or not is a matter of personal preference! But don't argue about it; enjoy the wonderful sound!
Actually, one can use head voice and falsetto at the same time. It is generally referred to as a mixed voice or voix mixte. It is becoming a heavily used teaching method for many countertenors being trained nowadays.
The head (or chest -- as some like to refer to it, in terms of female descriptions) is taken up until a little bit before middle C, then a mix is usually taken up about an octave or so more with "reinforced" falsetto accentuating the top of the voice.
Really? How does that sound? It's always nice to be able to ask real counter-tenors what they think about these things... As it's highly likely that you'll know more about it than I do!
The goal is for it to sound like a fluid transition between the falsetto sound to the mixed sound to the head/chest voice. Often, as the transition towards the "natural" fach approaches the sound has to be lightened and brightened.
Bejun Mehta is a good example of a nice smooth transition, and his mixed voice at the lower registers is amazing. Check him out singing Mozart on here.
I think the difference between falsetto and full voice is the amount of body contact on the vocal folds, ie falsetto only uses the upper edge which is thin ,loud and beyond colour or tone, full contact allows colour, tone and richness of voice. Where voices have not broken fully in male voices it allows the singer to reach the upper notes with tone and control (full body contact of the vocal folds), as with Jaroussky. That has been my understanding. (500 c)
I am an audio engineer AND a classical singer, I think I know what I'm talking about. Falsetto when is recorded sounds hollow because it lacks the higher harmonics one would find in head voice! That's a scientific fact!
Tenor sfogato...and audio engineer. And I know this...falsetto when recorded sounds hollow compared to head voice, it lacks the higher harmonics of head voice. Just like a trebble sounds hollow compared to a female because they have more low harmonics actually.
what's this? not conducted by spinosi?,,, odd, very odd... still its jaroussky, what else can be expected, but cristal clear delivery of notes and great colors.
It's so interesting to see the micking tecnique! I imagine they use two tubes and 2 condensers to they can get both fuller sound and higher harmonies ('coz falsetto lacks them naturally).
u r ignorant and don't know anything about a real countertenor voice...a real countertenor like Jaroussky or David Daniels has all the harmanonic than the other voices...of course real countertenors not falsettistas like Dominique Vissé
actually is quite insulting to say the word falsetto, a countertenor and a falsettista r not the same thing, a countertenor voice is as richer as any female singer and full of harmonics if the technique is good u should learn more about music specially about countertenors before post this kind of comments, im a countertenor and as i say before the fact that u say that countertenor sings with falsetto is stupid and insulting
Do countertenors use head voice? Because a counter-tenor's F5 nothing like a tenor's F5. All counter-tenors I've met have talked about developing falsetto, and falsetto is not an "insulting concept" simply means you don't use the full length of the vocal chord.
His coloratura is spectacular in that it's so legato, unlike most other coloaratura greats such as Bartoli and Genaux. Makes me think twice about it. I always prefered well-articulated aspirated executions, but his is very special, with apparently an excellent breath control.
AMAZING

I am an audio engineer AND a classical singer, I think I know what I'm talking about. Falsetto when is recorded sounds hollow because it lacks the higher harmonics one would find in head voice! That's a scientific fact!

This comment has received too many negative votes show
by the way r u gay? cause that comment and your comment :They must have broken up ;) have like some homophobic conotations
Heartlessiceboy 4 years ago
Yes, I'm gay bi whatever...and it's like a well known "secret" that Jaroussky and his earlier conductor had something going on!

Tenor sfogato...and audio engineer. And I know this...falsetto when recorded sounds hollow compared to head voice, it lacks the higher harmonics of head voice. Just like a trebble sounds hollow compared to a female because they have more low harmonics actually.

I love that mask! so beautiful, I wish I could get one like that. And his coloratura is fabulous! an inspiration for other singers.

It's so interesting to see the micking tecnique! I imagine they use two tubes and 2 condensers to they can get both fuller sound and higher harmonies ('coz falsetto lacks them naturally).
agnellodei 4 years ago
u r ignorant and don't know anything about a real countertenor voice...a real countertenor like Jaroussky or David Daniels has all the harmanonic than the other voices...of course real countertenors not falsettistas like Dominique Vissé
Heartlessiceboy 4 years ago
actually is quite insulting to say the word falsetto, a countertenor and a falsettista r not the same thing, a countertenor voice is as richer as any female singer and full of harmonics if the technique is good u should learn more about music specially about countertenors before post this kind of comments, im a countertenor and as i say before the fact that u say that countertenor sings with falsetto is stupid and insulting
Heartlessiceboy 4 years ago
Do countertenors use head voice? Because a counter-tenor's F5 nothing like a tenor's F5. All counter-tenors I've met have talked about developing falsetto, and falsetto is not an "insulting concept" simply means you don't use the full length of the vocal chord.

sì...davvero un poco ridicolo. :)

His coloratura is spectacular in that it's so legato, unlike most other coloaratura greats such as Bartoli and Genaux. Makes me think twice about it. I always prefered well-articulated aspirated executions, but his is very special, with apparently an excellent breath control.

Jaroussky is pure and angelic. He is amazing. But who is the conductor?
selyempina 4 years ago
The conductor is Emmanuelle Haïm. She's also the harpsichordist and the organist ;-)
