  • Ahhhhh...mysterious California!

  • Does anyone else think Gene Rayburn looks like the actor George Loros from the 70's? (Seen on Rockford Files and other shows)

  • to bad wendy didnt have red hair..

  • That music was funky especially the wah wah guitar & funky bass every afternoon after school i hurry home to watch Match Game.

  • The best answer to Question No. 2 is "Jo Ann Pflug."

  • what did he say in french

  • gameshowtemple just uploaded the entire pilot, and in excellent quality too!

  • If its the pilot episode, how could she have already won $1,200/

  • I wonder why the set designer put that odd ledge behind the lower panel's chairs?

  • It's been reported Gene, who had worked at NBC in New York in the early 60s, didn't like Jack Parr and thought his abrupt resignation was the action of a spoiled little rich kid from Connecticut.

  • Where;s Gene's mic?

  • @SmappleMcWingers "Gene's mike was SO big he had a hard time keeping it in his "blank."

  • Is it wrong that i watch these for the outfits?? I love how people dressed back then!!

  • When did Brett come on the show?

  • @fluteplaya22593 She came on in 1973, after a few weeks Match Game was on the air. Since Jack Klugman was on the show, he mentioned the idea of Brett appearing on the show.

  • Not the pilot listen to what Gene said about the champion she had won 1200 dollars

  • @Primex007 On many game show pilots, they had a player caled the champion but really wasn't as that was just for the pilot.

  • I read once that Jack Klugman agreed to do this episode in return for his then-wife Brett getting a regular gig on the show.

  • Obvious that this is the pilot. The questions are a little more serious than usual. But still fun to watch.

  • Wow... Betty White was only in her 50's!

  • @jrchevy Betty white is in her 80s now

  • Did Richard really think the contestant was going to say Victor Mature??? lol I'm surprised nobody said Marilyn Monroe.

  • how do you like that low tech set? looks like it's made of cardboard

  • Hey thats the evil host of the running man!

  • Did you guys see Bert Convy as a costestent on match game and host super password?

  • @justin63125 He was actually a panelist on Match Game.

  • Comment removed

  • Pretty good, just wish the bonus round was available to watch though, see if it was much different from the actual series.

  • The Match Game 7x porno music still rules after all these years.

  • Richard was SEXY!!!

    Dawn

  • Gene doesn't have his Mic? I think it looks better like that.

  • @SuperNezzy Gene only used his mic for the Super Match round in the first season or two. He only used it full-time in later season.

  • Betty Whiiiiiite~! <3 <3

  • My Favorte Version of Match Game is the 1990 Version with Ross Shafer.

  • Comment removed

  • I remember Match Game combined with Hollywood Squares but I do not think it lasted that long.

  • I assume the contestants were actors.

  • @torchkit

It's possibly meant to demonstrate how the game's returning champion system worked.

  • that old bag Arlene! I wonder if some guy has that spinning light thingy in his basemennt (it's probaly really small)?

  • Jo Ann is yummy.

  • The contestants are yummy!

  • Anyone have the Match Game 1990 pilot with Bert Convy?

  • That's the first time I've seen Burt arguing with Betty!

  • Betty gets in a subtle dig at having her first answer dismissed by saying, "I don't know if this is a match, Gene, the way YOU play the game."

    Funny.

  • Any chance you have them playing the Jackpot Match part of the game? I'd like to see how it played pre-series.

  • This pretty much pre-dated Family Feud.

  • Richard Dawson is the only person who is the original celebrity that's sitting in his original seat in his original row. Something nice to see. Match Game is a good game.

  • Betty White is also in her usual spot.

  • @tonshaad1230

    So is Betty White!

  • Love it but it's just not the same without Brett and Charles!

  • @MissClassicTV1

As long as we have Richard, we shouldn't worry.

  • this show was so hip and fun back then

  • Wow they really toned it down for the pilot, or more properly, ramped it up for the show

  • The second is correct. Initial ratings were pretty bad, so the writers and production crew decided to spice things up. Ta-da! Thus was born the racy (and massively popular) Match Game.

  • Actually the show started with these bland questions during the first few weeks, then the fun began later on!

  • Betty White looks wonderful! Love her outfit with brooch.

  • weres charles and brett lmaoo

  • They didn't start until the 3rd week after the show started it's original run in 1973. I have a clip of their 1st appearance on YouTube.

  • how can you have a defending champion on a pilot?

  • Its commonly used in pilots. Remeber, the pilot is used to sell the show. They use the "returning champion" to show what a normal episode is like to the network.

  • I see a lot of pilots ending with the hosts saying to the champion, 'we'll see you with a new challenger next time we play ____.'

    Are pilots written?

  • Pilots are very scripted :)

  • This looks like 1970s tv

  • Mebbe cause it is

  • The show the stars in a different order at the opening. Why is that?

  • Tight from the beginning it is clear that we have a surprise hit on our hands. THere doesn't appear to be too much of a game but they are managing the execute it well with celebrity interaction and interesting questions. The material may be a slight risque but it is a definate start for the series. The set is a bit awkward but that can all change. Everyone was executed well and I say that this show should definately sell. I give 5 stars for this pilot.

  • Hello Susan, you are a stunner!

  • Yes, but what does she look like now??!!??

  • It's great to see this show again. I used to love it.

  • Makes me wonder when we will get the rest.

  • A few ironies:

Klugman's wife would be the #2. Convy hosted the pilot for the 1990 revival but illness led to Ross Shafer taking it. Dawson in #5, and Betty White in #6.

  • I've always wanted to see the "Jackpot Match" round. It only exists in the pilot.

  • Do you have the rest of the pilot?

  • the girl that won, she was pretty cute.

  • why were the contestants so much more telegenic back then.

  • I like this and the Australian version.

  • Great great great game show...when they came out with the other two Match Games after this one...made me sad...you cannot duplicate a gem like this....right?

  • Oh, I don't know -- MG/HS' problems had more to do with the changes they made to HS (and Jon Bauman as host) than anything else. I ALWAYS thought Match Game '90 was a very faithful sucessor to MG7x.

Now, with regards to Match Game '98 -- you got me on that one. The less said about that -- the better.

  • I heard that for the 1990 version, Bert Convy actually hosted the pilot. However, not too long after doing that, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. As a result Ross Shaffer was selected to host the new version.

  • What would have happened if Gene hosted BOTH halves of MG/HS?

  • Good idea, but it would of been better if Peter Marshall and Gene Rayburn hosted MG/HS hour.

  • I said the same thing many times! Both Peter and Gene made great game show emcees! RIP Gene!

  • I've heard that was the original plan, but at the 11th hour they decided to go with "Bowzer" Bauman.

  • Jack Klugman is Bret's hubby...figured I would share that trivia with ya all :)

  • And it was Jack that suggested her for the show.

  • This show was so funny. I still watch this when I can. Brett Somers and Charles Nelsom Reilly made this show the way it is. They will both be missed.

  • Interesting fact. Jack Klugman used to be married to Brett Sommers

  • yes and when she was on, she would crack on him all the time

  • Actually, they stayed married, as even though they both separated in 1974, they never divorced, as they both always said that they couldn't imagine being married to someone else!

  • Also strange to see Gene without his tradmark microphone.

  • Why didn't Fremantle Media include THIS on the DVD set? On the DVD set, they call the 1st episode the pilot. THIS is the real pilot!

  • It was an error on thier part

  • I love match game!! i want the dvd for christmas! i think they sell a best of set

  • I got the DVD when it first came back and it is very good. Hope they come out of another volume!!

  • Vol. 2 is coming out soon, but I think its really Disc 2 repackaged.

  • That would be a real rip off.

  • No, that was the "Dumb Dora" edition. The real Vol. 2 is coming out next year.

  • It's interesting to hear Johnny's intros without the laugh track. It seems empty without it yet more real.

Note how the audience isn't as vocal either.

  • It would take at least 100 people to have as much ego as

    Richard Dawson.

  • @joezeppy06 what about in "bob barkers"

  • I love the Bob Barker style microphone!

  • If this was the first episode, then how did they already have a champion who had already won money?

  • "If this was the first episode, then how did they already have a champion who had already won money?"

There might've been an untaped game played. I know that the 1st "Tic Tac Dough" in 1978 started with a champion that Wink explained was crowned on an "untaped show".

  • This wasn't the "first episode" -- this was the PILOT. The episode they used to sell the game. That's why it looks a little different -- the contestants are 'fakes', if you will.

  • Thats not true, there as genuine as a $3 bill... Wait a sec...

  • What does THAT comment have to do with Match Game?

  • a 'maiden voyage'. it would have been nice if this was on 'the best of match game' on DVD.

  • For those of you who don't know this, out of this show came one of the most successful game show spinoffs, "Family Feud". It was Richard Dawson's popularity on this show that got him the gig. After Dawson left "Match Game" in '78, the ratings started to slip.

  • Dick? Is that you, say hello to Hogan and Scultz.

  • It was Richard Dawson. I believe he lives in a ranch in Santa Paula.

  • Mr . Dawson did do Match Game and Family Feud together, until they came out with the "Star Wheel", because every one picked Richard,if made him leave Match Game.

  • Richard Dawson was just off his stint with the TV Show Hogan's Heros.

  • Actually, he was just off his (and Larry Hovis') brief stints as regulars on "Laugh-In" (!!!), which they did after "Hogan's Heroes".

  • Actually, the ratings started to slip in 1977, when "Match Game" was moved to a morning time slot - us kids who came home from school to watch the show weren't able to, so the ratings took a nose dive in that time slot. By the time CBS moved it back to the afternoon, it was at the 3pm (CST) time slot, which sealed its fate in April of 1979.

  • Man, I was surprised at Arlene Francis' answer. I'd though be a bit conservative. But the show needed Brett and Chuck.

  • Worked that time! Awesome vid! You've just won the Jackpot Match.

  • Yes, I'd like to see the "Jackpot Match" round. (I know it's "Super Match" with a different name, but I'm just curious to see what it looks like.)

  • Please Please Please get the rest of this posted soon! This is a Match Game lover's dream!

  • I'm testing out he Match Game Website's bandwidth, and I need your help, I would like you to download Match Game Pilot from 1973. I want to see what happens and see if the site can take so many downloads, The pilot does not include Slate.

Click on my user name and go on my channel to see my URL, or read the description.

  • I went to the link, but I got Koreru dot com. I guess you don't have enough bandwidth.

  • The server was moved, try it now!

  • do ya got the other 1/2 of this ep?

  • Theres so many subtle differences in this pilot, Gene enters the show from the left, the contestants podium is one piece, the question holder is different, The star's

podium lights are bigger, and the podium lights also stay on until a match is made, and the Super match is known as jackpot match.

  • and they had a question without a blank. ive never seen that before.

  • @prausch65 And the triangles were blue instead of green.

  • @dagdogg The panel's cards were also green, not blue.

  • There was already a champion? What's up with that?

  • It was a pilot, the pilot is a demonstration show to the network what the shows would look like on TV.

I have two episodes of Card Sharks pilot both had "Returning" Champions, but neither earned the title.

  • Could you possibly post those? I've always wanted to see those in higher quality.

  • Where did you exhume such a good quality copy from?

  • To the user of this video, when are you going to post the other 2 parts of the pilot?

  • To the poster of the last comment: It's coming soon.
