People who can't sing really shouldn't try, it's just too embarrassing. Almost as embarrassing as his lyrics. Boy can play, though, that much he can do.
I generally somewhat like Steve's solo albums, but I really didn't like this one. To me it seemed way too sinister sounding and dark. I like music that I can sing along to a bit and that is positive.
i always found Steve Hacketts guitar style so interesting but enjoyed Steve Howes shredding and amazing chord style more. But now i love Hackett so much more he is always interesting whether he's doing a mind blowing shred or getting unbelievable feedback or tapping or... He gives so much too guitar playing which he isn't credited for it is such a shame
Very dark, very creepy, but very cool stuff. I always felt that Steve and Peter shared a sort of kinship in their artistic personalities. They aren't afraid to stray into the disturbing side of life. Take for example "The Barry Williams Show" and "Darktown". Phil and Mike's work seems shallow and childish by comparison...
Todays metal tends to be a bunch of crappy arrogant composers trying to look scary and pyschopathic but rather looking like metal cases and clowns.
Hackett is a real musician & genius composer and this simple tune has more depth, anguish, pathos and terror than any shit piece of metal I've ever heard outside a few exceptions.
@lordsong7 being one of those 'exceptions' Dreamer deceiver by Judas Priest... i mean, what can be scarier than getting awoken by lsd about the mysticism that surrounds us and getting aware of the owns nothingness?
I agree, what is it with guitarists wanting to sing so badly? Ted Nugent and Ace Frehley also come to mind, ruin their music with their singing.
Steve doesn't need Peter and Phil to make his music awesome, but someone better than himself. His instrumental pieces are fantastic, the ones with his vocals.......hit and miss to me.
Another Legend that remains from Genesis, one of the greatest bands out there, pioneers of progressive. This guy's talent is remarkeable. Look up blood on the rooftops by genesis this guy wrote it, ver well done.
All the people who think that this is a waste of talent in my opinion I think it was intended by the artists to sound like this. So if you want to criticise think about not what but who you are critiquing.

Is it true that Steve collects vintage shovels and is extremely interested in local Rainfall figures? I heard that recently he purchase a quality Spear and Jackson shovel whereby the 'andle broke...
Hackett, along with Fripp and Howe, is a huge inspiration to me. The man was sweep-picking and tapping in 1971(years before EVH or Yngwie). He was definitely one of the more innovative guitarists of the 'prog' era(about '70-'77). Plus, Hackett's use of the harmonized solo was what made Brian May literally change his whole style. Not to mention Hackett's nylon-string guitar playing. Whether you like him or not, the other guys approached Hackett to do 'Guitar Wars' for a reason.
"Gabriel & Hackett were the genious behind Genesis" that is absolutely true. I'm a Genesis fan and the first LP without Hackett is so non-genesis. Latest works of Hackett (darktown, to watch the storms and wild orchids) are for their really hardcore fans. Go on Hackett!!
Guess what? With the except of the Lamb, during the Gabriel/Hackett era...they were recording and performing music that Anthony Phillips wrote. Anthony Philips left Genesis after Trespass, but a lot of the music on their albums from Nursery Crime to Selling England, Phillips was the main writer of most of those songs. Hackett will tell you himself that he didn't feel as though he had really contributed until Wind and Wuthering.
And another fact for the anti-Collins people. Collins didn't contribute into the writing aspect of Genesis until Invisible Touch, which is the second last album. Until then, he only contributed instrumentation relative to the drum and percussive parts. So if you think Genesis is too poppy or sappy, keep in mind Rutherford and Bands wrote most of that music. And to me, songs like Home By the Sea, Domino, and Tonightx3, are songs that are very similar to earlier Genesis style music.
I think it's important I say this, because it seems like you claim quite some knowledge here. The only songs that were even just partially written by Anthony Phillips were The Musical Box and Fountain Of Salmacis, and even those hadn't been finished when he left. It's true that Hackett didn't contribute as much to the earlier albums, though, even After The Ordeal was going to be left off Selling England until Peter Gabriel complained.
As for your claim on Phil Collins's lack of contribution, he did actually completely write two songs on Duke himself (Misunderstanding and Please Don't Ask). Currenly they're the only songs I'm certain about. Invisible Touché!
What in the f**k are you smoking? He contributed on Selling England by the Pound, and may other songs up to - and including - those on 'Duke.' If you are going to do a commentary, you really must get your story straight!
You are wrong. Phillips was the main architect of Trespass, but only a few of his ideas were used on Nursery Cryme, and nothing after that (aside from "Twilight Alehouse"). Banks and Rutherford were the primary writers after Phillips left, with Gabriel and Hackett adding some input. Gabriel wrote "Willow Farm" and "Counting Out Time" by himself, and Hackett contributed with "Horizons", "After the Ordeal", "For Absent Friends", "Supernatural Anaesthetist", "Hairless Heart", and "Entangled"
It's easy to see that Gabriel & Hackett were the genious behind Genesis. I was looking forward to a "true" Genesis reunion. Although a great drummer, I can't handle Phil Collins "pop" music. Thanks for posting this creative piece of music.
