Don't some peeps have anything better to do than harsh on ML--something over which they have zero control?
All I can say is, as a young boy growing up in California as the BB's were gaining popularity, I pretty much ignored them until the night I saw Mike Love performing on TV. I had seen the posters of the bland, cookie-cutter, mop-topped, white-toothed, pretty boys called the Beach Boys, but not a fan until I saw this funny, irreverent, slightly edgy, but completely cool cat named Mike Love.
dennis just dropped a stick @ 40 sec. mark. nothing is biting anybody anywhere except at the record store when they are biting you @ the cash register.
Al lot of people are bagging on Mike. He is just having fun. Give the bass vocal a little respect. This band had a deep bench when it came to vocals. People forget the fact that anyone from this band's members could sing great and has recorded great songs including the drummer Dennis. How many bands now days can do this while playing their own instruments?
I was doing just fine, tripping on this video, then started reading all the post here about mike love,so I started watching him real close, then at about 48 sec into this video, the drummer jumps up,like something bit him in the ass,did I miss something,RV.
Mike Love was just being the clown here. He did not take this whole lip synch session seriously. Check out "The Chords" the other guys are playing and try to fit them to this song, hilarious. I think Mike was trying his best to get Carl to laugh and blow his lip synch duties. I laugh my azz off each time I watch this video, but MAN did Carl ever nail it on the vocals with this Phil Spector cover!
@jltardiff Yeah, he's goofin' the other guys real hard. At one point someone off in the wings must be scolding him cause he looks over and makes a "so what?" gesture. Crazy stuff.
After watching this video, I have to wonder why the Beach Boys had Mike Love in the band? He is not even singing...just acting weird, as if for attention. I find it hard to watch this video, as he is so distracting and annoying. The other three boys are turning in an excellent performance. I would say Mike Love did not deserve to be a part of this excellent group.
Enough already. Mike went through the same shit. All these guys are Family and when You attack one of them You attack all of them. So remember that. And remember too that Brian was toasty for a long time and they still managed to carry on. So appreciate them and be thankful You never had to walk a mile in their flip-flops.
@stan2211stan I'm sorry the ML comments upset you, but, through the years, ML has shown himself to be a self-centered, uncaring, egomaniac. What "shit" did ML go through? The Wilson's were severely abused by their father. ML was not. ML is a cousin of the Wilson's, & to state the obvious about ML is not an attack on the rest of the band. To describe BW as being "toasty" is cruel. BW suffers from a mental illness & to call him "toasty," is unkind. Sorry, but ML remains an opportunist.
@twowaystreet101 Oh I see - so all that toot he shoved up his nose was therapy for mental illness. I get it now.
Regardless of Murry Wilson being a total tool Brian was together enough to start at quarterback for his high school football team. Please TWS, GTF Real. Brian Wilson was doing coke and acid regularly in serious volume and is damn lucky he's gotten as much back as he has. Brian's one of the luckier ones. And he would be at The Cemetery if it weren't for Mike.
@stan2211stan The fact that BW could present a "normal" image outside his home life, is not unusual for an abused child. Usually, what is going inside the home goes undetected, all the while the child's psyche is being damaged. When someone like that turns to drugs, it often leads to abuse and addiction. To say ML saved BW is a laugh. ML never attempted to intervene. He was too busy touring and making money off the songs his cousin wrote. Obviously, you're a fan of ML, I'm not. To each his own.
@twowaystreet101 You're obviously very young and very naive yourself. It was Mike who got Brian to go to a Doctor. Brian was totally content to sit in the sandbox and go Greta Garbo on the world. You psych people need to get a grip on reality. Murry sold the catalog for peanuts, if it wasn't for Mike clawing and fighting. they'd be destitute. Wake up. and stop trying to rewrite events to suit your agenda.
I could listen to this song, endlessly. Carl's voice is sweet, rich, & heavenly - perfection. On the other hand, I cannot bear to see Mike Love looking like a street urchin attending an 8th grade dance. The poor bastard can't dance, and his "mugging" throughout the song is pitiful and distracting (then again, when Love didn't have the "lead" on a song, he would do nothing but "mug" in an attempt to steal focus from one of the (truly talented) Wilson brothers. ML is a talentless buffoon.
@twowaystreet101 Okay, I'm not one to defend Mike Love as a person as I think the shit he's put Brian through is utterly evil, and I refuse to attend his Beach Boys cover band shows. But he is not talentless at all. If everyone in the Beach Boys sang like Carl and Brian it'd sound like a choir instead of a rock group; he had the cool voice that added a LOT to their songs in my opinion. Also, what's an instrument-less singer to do when he's not singing lead? Stand there like a tree? C'mon now!
@Hvacrmitch LOL. Poor, poor, ML. It seems dance lessons would have been in order. Someone should have given him a tambourine to play. Then again, not sure if ML was capable of playing a tambourine - might have been too difficult with his limited skills. While I agree, ML had a "nasal" quality to his voice, which lent a distinctive sound to the BB tracks, any nasal sounding singer could have done the job. ML was fortunate to be in the right place at the right time.
@twowaystreet101 come on don't be that critical of mike love even though he didn't really play anything he did contribute some good songs and he always sang the bass parts
@edjpasee There are many other comments here regarding ML's abilities. I would be less critical of the guy, if he hadn't shown himself to be so all about ML. He did contribute some lyrics to songs, & when BW chose other people to write with, ML was extremely critical of those songs. He did add a nasal quality to some leads & did sing bass. But it seems anybody could have filled that role. He comes across as not a very nice person. I could be wrong, I don't know the guy & I don't want to. .
@twowaystreet101 You've obviously been on stage a lot so you know how it is not to have a guitar to hide behind or to feel self-conscious or shy, and wonder what to do with your hands, or to try to dance or do something when you know, you just KNOW that the whole world is watching every little move you make. Right?
@ThomasFMPayne Yes, you're right. I've been on stage, singing lead & backing vocals. In no way do I consider myself a professional musician or performer. On the other hand, the Beach Boys are professional musicians, & I would expect more from someone (with or w/o an instrument) while performing. At the very least, they could have given the guy a tambourine to play. Despite all of our opnions of ML, I would hope we can all agree, Carl does an excellent job covering this Phil Spector tune.
@twowaystreet101 It's a wonderful song and they do a great job with it. Carl does have a fantastic voice. I just don't see the reason all the haters are jumping on him here.
@ThomasFMPayne My opinion of ML has been formed by what I've read about the BB's. One can't believe everything one reads, but what I've read by a variety of authors, ML is not portrayed in the best light. Watch early videos of the BB's, ML can dance. So, was he trying to crack up the guys? If so, why? There is a website out there (I'm not going to give the name), where people rant about why they hate ML. In the end (regardless of ML), it's the music that counts, and it remains, incredible.
@twowaystreet101 You got it friend. It is all about the music. I don't want to hear about Mike Love's personality. He has a great voice. The Boys would have hit the charts without him, but certainly not nearly to the degree that they did with him. Of course, who knows? Al was certainly overlooked, and maybe the Boys would have adapted and been even better. But I like Mike's voice, and he added the necessary deep voice to the Boys.
@twowaystreet101 Haa...yup, I just did, I've listened to it now about 8 times! Man, can't get enough of Carl's voice. No shit man...did they really even need mike Love after about 1965..? Not really...I've heard he's a total prick in real life. Read Chuck Negrons book (of Three Dog Night) and he has some great stories about meeting Brain and how AMAZING he was and what a tool Mike Love was...
@stingray1964 I think he is right there with Elvis and Sinatra. I have gone to 5 beach Boys concerts in 20 years. They try to duplicate his voice but can't quite do it. Those days are over.. sad.
@twowaystreet101 I actually think Mike is an incredible singer. I don't think he's talentless, per se: he's written a few good melodies. However, he's completely tasteless. I think that's his major crime. The guy has no taste and no drive for art: I read an interview where he talked about how he didn't like Brian's first solo album because it wasn't "commercial" enough. His words. Then he brings up that hoary old cliche that "Kokomo" was number one. UGH. Tasteless and tactless.
@twowaystreet101 Couldn't agree with you more! Carl sings like an angel, Mike Love has delusions of grandure!!! This is my favorite Beach Boy song. Never tire of hearing it!!
@checkmate440 I don't recall stating in any of my posts, or replies to messages sent to me, in which I said I could sing better than Mike Love. You must have misread something, or made the assumption that I felt I was a better singer. As I said, you must have misread, misunderstood, or are just misinformed. With all due respect, I'm afraid you know not what you speak of - please allow me to close by quoting you, "haha."
@Hocunto I'm not sure that's exactly how I would describe ML, but he has proven himself, over the years, to be an egomaniac with a distorted recall of his contributions to one of America's finest bands. ML, as a cousin to the Wilson's, was fortunate to have been in the right place at the right time, and should consider himself, lucky.
@manygate10 Stranger things have happened, I suppose. Then again, it is "show biz." Maybe Mike Love has finally buried the hatchet he's been carrying around all these years. My only fear is he might bury that hatchet in Brian Wilson's back - lol. Despite all opinions of Mike Love, good or bad, the Beach Boys remain as one of America's finest bands. In the end, it's all about the music, and the Beach Boys (Brian, in particular), made some of the best music I've ever heard.. :)
i think this is my favorite song ever.
