Front right hand chassis leg on the outside is where you can find the chassis number. Or if it has the alloy plate with it stamped.. On a 2, 2a its on the inside near the gearbox on the bulkhead (On the low,hi range plate. And on a S3 its on the right hand side of the drivers foot well.

The diffs aren't lockable on the series land rovers. You can buy diff locker kits for them though. Having said that, as demonstrated they're pretty capable just with standard equipment and good tyres...why else would the military use them?!

Well, that would be desperately more difficult than normal.. Buy a coil sprung richards chassis, then weld your own engine mounts. The rover body wouldn't like how much the jeep frame flexes, cause rover frames are fully boxed instead of C channel.

Inability to engage 4WD could be just a selector shaft problem - muck and rust jams the shaft - no need to take the gearbox out to fix that.

We had the opposite problem - stuck in 4wd as well as jumping out of second gear, so I think we'll live with it now that we can now select 2wd... hopefully the next time you have a look you'll be able to sort it!
