What I have learned about life, its not about the performance, but about the heart, like it is not about the letter of the law, but the spirit of the law!
I was at Golden Gate Park that day, saw this performance and was blown away. Yes, Bill brought us lots of great music! Thanks so much for posting this.
My bad- -true enuff- - Bruce Berry and Danny Whiten- Niels friends are who you must be speaking of Neil as you correctly point out- - didnt go there- - thanx, I guess I was typing faster than my mind was goin- old age does that
Its a nice jam but the audience seems kind of depressed or something. Garcia got lost a few times and went out of key, as did the band LOL. Jerry seems a bit out of it. Don't get me wrong I like the Dead and Neil too and have seen both many times, but in all honesty sometimes they seem to get by on their 'brand name' rather than on their talent. Sorry, just being honest.
Wow - a trifecta! Neil Young and Jerry playing a Dylan song! Happy Birthday Bob Dylan and thanks for all the great music over the years! Jerry is smiling from above for sure! :)
This was performed at the public memorial service for Bill Graham, the peerless concert empresario, who had just lost his life in a helicopter crash. Other artists performing included John Fogarty, Carlos Santana, CSNY, and a host of others. Approximately 500K attended, myself among them.
Those of us fortunate enough to literally grow up in the Fillmore, Winterland, Frost Amphitheater, Berkeley Community Theater, the Greek Theater - and scores of other venues were truly blessed. Thanks, Bill...

The days of old, man I miss the days of summer on tour, traveling, meeting new and old friends and experiencing this country from a view that is seldom seen anymore. This country lost a step the day that Jerry died. I was lucky to able to see Jerry and the Grateful Dead, JGB and Bret Midland...
Farmer John, I'm saving this, but I think you should mention the songwriter in your notes above, Audra Mae. She also did the song 'Who I was born to Be" for Susan Boyle" I found your great video by following the thread. Off to check out your other video. Thanks, this is awsome.
@lisa8220 im not gonna lie if i knew when you lived i would come to your house and deliver a handwritten twenty page essay describing exactly why your a dumbass, where do you gather the information that audra mae wrote this song? her COVER is barely years old and she cant be o;lder than thirty its people like you that are going to be the downfall of the human race
@doggybizzle Sorry, have Multiple schlerosis, and new to computer, difficult to read when sun is low in sky. Truely, I am not a misdirector of attributions. I love the song, and I love the stuff Audra Mae is coming up with. I doubt any one is going to quote me on my early experiences online.
This song has been played by many performers and each rendition is beautiful in it's own right. However, this on makes me cry! Love it. Love Neil Young. Love The Dead. LOVE Dylan! What a soul that man has.
@ucsteve I know just how you feel. I'm 61 pushing 62 and Neil Young and the old rock and roll keeps me Forever young,. Dylan, The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Crosby Stills Nash and Young and Crazy Horse. These individuals and band members music is timeless. What has happened to music? There is still some good stuff out there, but nothing compares to this. Someone once referred to me as a 'child of the sixties' Personally, I find that a good thing
Off key someone sayd? Did either Young or Dylan ever bother with singing in key? There lies their greatness... in being human and sing straight out of their heart... key or no key! Dylan himself sang this song a million times... still u can't possibly find 2 simular versions :)
his passion exudes. fame is very different from money. the amount of young musicians they have brought on is far more important than monetary gains. hope there students take up the guantlet cos we are running out of the talent and passion of neil..hail
Happy 69th Birthday Bob Dylan.....a bittersweet rendition of the song being off key, but Jerry's solo rocks as he used to play this tune with his JGB band. I miss you Jerry and Bill Graham...you were such assets to the San Fran rock scene.
I've seen both (all) soooo many times. So regretting staying outside soldier field in 95 and hittin the tank instead of goin in...who knew the would be an end..but there was a new beginning as well...all good things in all good time
I have seen them both in various concerts and feel honored! I was at the Indianapolis show weeks before Jerry passed on 8/9/95. I still have the summer tour poster, which Jerry was unable to complete. He will always be near us within the music he left. Do not forgot the Dead!!!!!!!
@flannes1972 I don't think anyone could ever forget the dead. They will live forever. Whenever we pack ship and move to another planet, the dead will be played on that planet.
Beautiful, but so off tune and thus sad. "Forever Young" played to cute, actually young audience by pushing 60s folks. Go figure. Will there be room for new "great ones"? Jerry saves the day.
is this the polo fields show that john fogerty was at along w/ neil and other? this has always been one of my favorite dead shows.... and @jamjax, jerry does sing this song, but if neil is there, why would he.
Why are none of the Dead singing. When Jerry does this song there are backup singers.. I heard somewhere that Jerry didn't want to sing cause Neil is off key.??
