This brings back great memories to me, about twenty years back, when they first built this Metro station. I used to run up and down the escalator. All escalators look small to me now . Anyway, this is my hometown and where I gre wup and now i live in Seattle. This makes me homesick.
Wikipedia says it's the longest escalator in the Western Hemisphere. I'm hoping to move to the area if I get the job (2nd interview coming up for a company in Rockville, MD). Currently in Sacramento, CA.
Hey that's an escalator upon which you can tell your life story! Just sit on your step and say something like this: On Nov. 28, 1969, I was born....and take it from there. :)
I thought the escalator at Lexington Avenue/53rd in the NYC subway was long but this is three times the length. I was in awe the first time I went to Wheaton.
This is the one thing I hate about the DC Metro. The stations are clean and usually safe, but my God, the escalators are brutal. I always look for an elevator when the escalator is this long. Unfortunately, I wasn't always able to find the elevator, or one that was working.
I rememember this scalator, I used to work in Hecht's Wheaton Plaza, now Macy's, before moving to California. It is really long, maybe 3 times longer than the one in Civic Center Station, Los Angeles.
WMATA Metrobus routes C2, C4, L7, Q2, Y5, Y7, Y8, and Y9 serves this station. Just wanted to point that out to people who don't know what buses serves this station
yup its long, i wonder why they havent shot any scenes for a movie or somthing there, its freakin scary. and believe or not, I once saw a black teenager fall from like the middle and he just got up then sat down in pain. I swear
Damn that is a long ride. When I stayed in Silver Spring, I remember the METRO being above ground. It was above ground from New York AVE To Shady Grove. Is that right? Or atleast to Wheaton.
None of that is right. Silver Spring is above ground and goes underground immediately to the north and stays that way till the end of the line at Glenmont. To the south it's above ground until Union Station and stays under until Grosvenor.
@OZB123 Yeah, and then it goes into another tunnel, then emerges at White Flint, and then it does it again, before emerging halfway to Twinbrook. From that point on, it's above ground the rest of the way to Shady Grove.
1:30 that guys hair, man...

It takes exactly as long to ride that escalator as it does to listen to the song "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath!

Smithsonian escalator is not even close to Wheaton. Bethesda station escalator is about as close you can get to Wheaton's.

The escalator at the station at the Smithsonian in DC is equally long, or at least close to it.

It seems to me that you've missed your train, because I heard it come into the station.

I remember visiting DC and taking the metro from Rosslyn station (from the hotel) to Smithsonian
going down/up the escalator was scary as hell for some reason (fear of heights probably)
but that probably doesn't compare to this

There are some of interesting details (I compare with Moscow Mero)
1) very dull light and no lamps between escalators
2) escalators are empty and there are no queues, but the middle escalator is working (very unusual)
3) very small distance between escalators
