Feel sorry for the friends and family of those who died.. Also for the train driver.. Stepping out of the locomotive and seeing the car all messed up knowing the occupants are all dead gives me the creeps. Sad story
I couldnt imagine being that conductor and getting out and seeing that sight! It wasnt his fault, Im sure he had many a nightmare about that sight! I feel for him and the loved ones of that car.
@Nysguy2003 it was totally his fault, is like when you cross the street you have to stop and watch on both directions to see if there's no car coming, but this time was a train, he didn't do that, so that's the price he paid. Sorry
The train is NOT supposed to stop at every intersection. Its going like 75 mph, it doesnt have time to stop, but even if it did, thats what crossing gates are for. They were supposed to be down, but in this case they were up and the car drove right into path of the train. Unlike cars, trains have the right-away, sucks but true.
@Nysguy2003 i meant that was the car's driver fault, of course i know it's imposible to stop more than 4000 tons of steel going at 75mph in just 10 mts, i said it was the car's driver fault
Sorry to disappoint. First off, collision speed was 62mph. I've seen the download. Second, our trains will not accelerate another 3-5 mph when we put them in emergency...and I know this from experience. Even if he was pulling under full amperage, power is killed instantly by the PCS (Power Cutoff Switch), so he might have picked up maybe 1 mph due to momentum. Our brakes kick on quick. I can be in full power and put on a half brake and stop forward momentum in 1-1.5mph.
@AmJaxineer Thank you for that info. Can't argue with the download, even if it seems at variance with the video evidence. There looks to be a definite surge of speed around 2:08. I wonder if the frame rate varies in the conversion process; it's rather jerky, even on the best copies..
@Sonicwizrd The train was accelerating when it collided with the car, which probably wasn't visible to the engineer from his position in the cab. The impact evidently took him by surprise, and may even have knocked his hands off the controls. The locomotive kept accelerating for some seconds before the throttle was closed and brakes applied.
@danlefou You really dont know what you are talking about. The brakes were dumped a half a second after the impact. The noise you heard was the locomotives dynamic brakes kicking in which take a few seconds to setup, and then load up.
@AmJaxineer I've studied railways for over 50 years. I know what dynamic brakes are and how they work. I can also find landmarks on maps, use a stopwatch and work out speeds between them. From the switch passed at 1:56 to the crossing, the train averaged 61 mph. At the crossing, known train length over time gives about 65.5. From the crash to the white tie end at 4:56, average is about 67, giving a likely max of 69-70. The impression of continued acceleration is reinforced by time over distance.
It's cool how fast he reacts. My instinct would have been to honk the horn again for some reason, though that clearly wouldn't have done any good. Instead, he immediately throws on the brakes....
...
Which I guess doesn't do much good either, but it at least improves the odds of survival for those hit.
@lolz976 Only one person was driving, and there is no reported evidence that he had been drinking. He was in a hurry to get one of his passengers home before going to work.

its the fault of the people in the car. If they heard several train horns (and those things are loud as hell), why the fuck didn't they stop? No matter how far away the damn train is. You stop.
All of you people saying you don't feel sorry for them dying, think of what your saying. These people died, show some respect! They could have been the safest drivers ever but for 1 small little time they make a mistake, they mess up that 1 little time and it cost them their lives. I feel sorry for both drivers, and you all should to, they made a mistake and we have all made mistakes so don't call these people stupid. Please show respect.
the drivers in THIS country appear to get stupider as time goes on. Stop at all crossings or prepare to stop. I really don't feel sorry for follks who ignore railroad crossings and get injured or killed, drive responsibly PERIOD...
@ajpardi75 Your kind of thinking is very true and very rare. I have honestly concluded the very same thing. I believe Americans have exponentially become more dumb over the past 10-15years particularly behind the wheel. When I'm going down the road I tend to look at people, and if they aren't texting they appear to mindless drones.
I don't feel sorry for anyone who decides to cross the tracks like that...I feel MORE sorry for the train engineer who ends up hitting that car and their thoughts afterwards...
There's two people that I know that I won't get in the car again after they drove like idiots. It sucks when your life is in some one elses control and they have no morals for safety. The sad thing is this guy driving was probably trying to save a few seconds of time and it ended up costing him and four others years of their lives. It ain't worth the risk, thats why I drive like a Saint now.
@wiggsy84 It's this whole taking a risk to save a few seconds which shows how thick these people are. My instructor said it is always better to arrive 5 minutes late in this life than 60 years early in the next.
why america does not have full barriers like at Freshfields Forbmy Merseyside i will never know, cars cannot get under or throught the barriers there.
Well thats a bit like natural selection only the people that don't jump in front of trains survive. Poor train operator though, he probably feels really bad even though its not his fault
@michoolhoofd It a massive long train, if it stopped instantly, there would have been casualties on the train. The train could have even crashed if it stopped instantly.
this is what happens when 1 jackass tries to save a few minutes and ends up killing himself and 4 innocent people. the train driver did everything right pulled his horn ect. the cars driver was 100% at fault. theres no way he couldnt hear the trains whistle.
it was not a suicide i swear y do you people just asoom theses things how about you know the fact first be4 u think like that at least i know the truth
They were listening to Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck radio show. They are really attention grabbing programs but the listeners usually are distracted from the bigger picture and ultimately pay with their lives, like the middle class.
@ninuxy So, you blame a radio for this accident. Instead of pure human stupidity or rather suicide. Aren't you just smarter than the rest of us, thank you for opening my eyes to your amazing intelligence.
@benschlechter It was a 2 way road. There was an SUV in their lane and they went around it speeding. If the SUV was stopped at the tracks, that should have been clue #1 that a train was coming.
n their way back to drop her off at home. So I'm sure her mother feels guilty too, along with that poor train driver :( remember the driver was a person too and his family is not responsible for the poor choices he made that day, they are victims too.
I live about a mile from where this happened, that was an Amtrak train and they were from the area too so they also knew this was a fast moving train. I don't know why he thought he could make it. What is even worse is because it was an Amtrak they would have only had to stop for maybe 30 seconds before it passed. It's so sad bcuz the one girls mother told her she better get her butt home cuz she told her no she could not go to the beach with them and she was trying to go anyway and they were o
I live in London, UK we have stupid crossroad deaths like this. I've seen 2 different suicides from beside the track, both were girls and I wish I could 'unsee' what happened, also one time I was on the train and it smashed into someone, the train stopped and smell of the burning metal, brakes and flesh/blood across the train was sickly
@LordGesior A horrible fresh blood, clinical kind of smell a bit like inside a butchers, the burning metal type smell mixed with it made it worse. A lot of it was across the side of the first couple of carriages, which I was in, so when I got out it was disgusting
I can't believe that the car waiting at the crossing just carried on it's journey after this happened in front of it - you got to feel for the train driver.

Area51UFOGynaecology 4 months ago
note the time it took the train to stop!
michoolhoofd 4 months ago
@michoolhoofd It a massive long train, if it stopped instantly, there would have been casualties on the train. The train could have even crashed if it stopped instantly.
CatatonicClarity 4 months ago
@michoolhoofd it takes on some of the heavy freights like 2 to3 miles to stop sometimes
residentevil742 1 month ago
this is what happens when 1 jackass tries to save a few minutes and ends up killing himself and 4 innocent people. the train driver did everything right pulled his horn ect. the cars driver was 100% at fault. theres no way he couldnt hear the trains whistle.
kenshin9894 5 months ago 14
@kenshin9894 The IDIOT was notrying to save time.
The moron was showing off. Showing what a "bad boy" he was by breaking the law. The imbecile was also giving everyone a THRILL.
Maybe stereo was blasting. Does not matter if he heard the locomotive horn.
The (o)T(o) were operating and gates down and their lights flashing. That is more than enough warning.
The fool broke man's law but can't break the law of physics.
robertgift 5 months ago
@robertgift easily the case as well point is he was responcible for everyones deaths not the train operator.

They were listening to Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck radio show. They are really attention grabbing programs but the listeners usually are distracted from the bigger picture and ultimately pay with their lives, like the middle class.

@ninuxy What the fuck is wrong with your head?
MoziIIa4000 5 months ago
@MoziIIa4000 Just find. How about yours? You listen to AM/XM trash radio while crossing the rail road too?
ninuxy 5 months ago
@ninuxy So, you blame a radio for this accident. Instead of pure human stupidity or rather suicide. Aren't you just smarter than the rest of us, thank you for opening my eyes to your amazing intelligence.

That was stupid. Try to beat the train, die, and make everyone on the train late.
The4LA2Baker0 5 months ago
This is why traffic signal cameras should be placed at railroad crossings with signals and gates.
benschlechter 5 months ago
Looks like the signals were working good enough for the other car to stop
rick6393 5 months ago
@benschlechter It was a 2 way road. There was an SUV in their lane and they went around it speeding. If the SUV was stopped at the tracks, that should have been clue #1 that a train was coming.

n their way back to drop her off at home. So I'm sure her mother feels guilty too, along with that poor train driver :( remember the driver was a person too and his family is not responsible for the poor choices he made that day, they are victims too.
TyGBeaks 5 months ago
I live about a mile from where this happened, that was an Amtrak train and they were from the area too so they also knew this was a fast moving train. I don't know why he thought he could make it. What is even worse is because it was an Amtrak they would have only had to stop for maybe 30 seconds before it passed. It's so sad bcuz the one girls mother told her she better get her butt home cuz she told her no she could not go to the beach with them and she was trying to go anyway and they were o

I live in London, UK we have stupid crossroad deaths like this. I've seen 2 different suicides from beside the track, both were girls and I wish I could 'unsee' what happened, also one time I was on the train and it smashed into someone, the train stopped and smell of the burning metal, brakes and flesh/blood across the train was sickly
kane28577 5 months ago
@kane28577 What did the flesh and blood smell like?
LordGesior 5 months ago
@LordGesior A horrible fresh blood, clinical kind of smell a bit like inside a butchers, the burning metal type smell mixed with it made it worse. A lot of it was across the side of the first couple of carriages, which I was in, so when I got out it was disgusting
kane28577 5 months ago
Oh my god .! This is horrifying .!
bubbleslove1221 5 months ago
I can't believe that the car waiting at the crossing just carried on it's journey after this happened in front of it - you got to feel for the train driver.
caxtonman 5 months ago
I feel sorry for the train driver. That memory will be with him for the rest of his life.
