The B1-b is at the top of my list of thrilling aircraft. When they are in swept-wing fast mode, they look and maneuver like fighters, but they are big beasts. The word AWESOME applies.

no they were not it is a standard operating procedure to do the half barrel roll it bleeds off airspeed so they don't go through the speed of sound just pulling the engines back won't do it.

I attend air shows every year and I am pretty sure that this was the loudest aircraft I've ever heard in my life! It was amazing to watch with it's wings swept back. I'll be seeing it again this coming weekend!

@reviewanythingboy the b1b is a good bit louder than both of those. it actually uses a similar turbine that of the 747 but adds an afterburner. it also produces more thrust than those blue angels. i gotta work with them everyday and trust me you know when one takes off have had several F18s land and take off here and they don't even compare noise wise.

The B1 has terrain mapping radar so the plane can fly a few hundred feet off the ground to avoid radar. The pilots have learned that if they fly over an enemy position at that height the sound of the engine has the same effect as a conventional bomb explosion on the human body.

I know from exsperience the engines will rattle your bones but when our guys were taking fire at night from Taliban snipers they would call in a Bone to do an on the deck supersonic pass, the shock wave is tremendous and would quite every thing down until dawn. I know several people who were there , they said if you weren't ready for it your ears would bleed.

The B-2 was such a huge waste of money. The B1-B has better range, performance and can get the job done quicker. The B-2 is so expensive that the airforce actually has to think twice about risking a one billion dollar machine in combat despite it's stealth.

The B-1 may be getting the job down range but it is a terrible plane. Lowest FMC rate in the ACC and maintenance on that jet is near impossible. It is still an invaluable asset to our inventory but does it suck keeping it air ready. The B-2 was not a waste of money compared to our F-22 program. We actually use our B-2s...

Well, I think TERRIBLE is too harsh an evaluation. The B-1 is indeed like a high maintenance girlfriend. However I suspect that its low turnaround rate has a lot to do with lack of funds for repairs, equipment and upgrades: funds spent on other, highly questionable, projects.

The Russians had the same issues with the the Blackjack but after some major upgrades those bombers are far more reliable.

Well, the F-22 was a HUGE waste of money. So, you have to admit, comparing the B-2 program to the F-22 doesn't say very much. The F-35 looks good so far and a spin-off could probably make a great air-superiority fighter. I have always been a huge believer in VTOL. History has repeatedly shown that conventional-take-offs are great for first-strike but their long runways are sitting ducks.

The loudest plane at any air show is the B1B. Try 250' out in front of the spectators, under 100 feet off the deck, zone 5 at Mach 0.97-99 and a bit faster ;-0 at Edwards AFB air show. It's by far the lowest and fastest the B1B will fly at any show . A few years back the air force had to repair 71 cracked windshields out in the parking lot because it went a "bit" faster than Mach 0.99!

I work at Edwards and get a jolt at each air show from on top of our hangar that's in-line with 04 south.

I was camping at Ellsworth AFB years ago and they had some exercise at 4 a.m. ... a bunch of B-1s took off one after the other, with afterburners. It was REALLY LOUD. 1.2 mach is fast. There are faster planes out there but NOT at near the deck. I should know as I worked on the B-1b bomber from 93-96. Grand Forks AFB, ND and Ellsworth AFB, SD. During redflag events, the B-1b was one of the highest survivability planes there every single time. Mind you this was with AWACS, F-117 and numerous F-15/16 playing the enemy "role" looking for the Bone actively. 120,000 lbs/ft of thrust is no joke and is what makes the B-1b, a bad ass bomber ;)
