I've always found the staggering hypocrisy of the never ending task of condemning something but at the same time sanctioning it, when that same something originates from other quarters, quite appalling. It's amazing how the majority of people demonize Ty Cobb for being a racist, when we have people on Mt. Rushmore who owned human beings. Last I checked Ty Cobb never whipped anybody or broke up families by selling them off to other "masters".
He was 'allowed' to be racist. What are you kidding me? The whole damn major leagues were racist! He fit right in! He was just brutally honest and a little over-the-top psychotic about it. But he didnt make MLB whites-only. That happened long before he came along and continued long after he quit.
Truly one of the most amazing and dominating players of all time. I heard he once poked a single down right field line with the bottom of bat handle....on purpose!
If you're a Cobb fan you HAVE to see the movie "Cobb", Tommy Lee Jones is fantastic, always exclaiming that he's TY COBB !! . Jones plays the larger-than-life great man with great faults role perfectly.
Ty Cobb was actually a homosexual, and was once questioned in the in the case of Brody Delham, a 13 year old boy who was found raped and strangled, not to mention that he admitted to killing two african americans teens. The fact that this piece of shit is considered an "American Hero" is what's wong with this country.
@Soccerkid5532 not on your life because he's my 4th cousin and Ty Cobb was a shortened version of his name his real name was Tyrus Raymond Cobb and one of my relatives had the last name Cobb
Ty Cobb is the greatest hitter of all time. BA .366 Nobody else was even close Ty Cobb .366 (.36636)1 Rogers Hornsby .358 (.35850)2 Joe Jackson .356 (.35575)3 Pete Browning .349 (.34892)4 Ed Delahanty .346 (.34590)5
Mr. Cobb may have had his issues but pound per pound...he might have been the greatest player to have played the game. He wore his 'attitude' right on his sleeve.
Interesting how Cobb was labeled a racist yet baseball commonly referred to Indian players as "Chief," country farmboys as "Rube" and Hearing impaired as "Dummy" back in his day. He truly was a product of his times and environment in many ways.
Yes. It's amazing that he, Cap Anson, and Rogers Hornsby are always bashed for being the most controversial players of their day, despite the fact that few people thought and acted differently than them.
Various people condemn Cobb for being a such an awful person, yet few know that he was an extremely vocal advocate for integration in baseball.
And we often celebrate Chief Bender's accomplishments and his greatness, yet we call him by a stereotypical nickname he despised.
Ty Cobb was not only a great ball player but a philosopher among men.
He had the best batting average ever, yet he never broke 400. It makes me wonder why so many of us beat ourselves up for not being perfect 100% of the time. Read more on the Philosophy of Ty Cobb at paul needza education com
Cobb has the highest batting average at .367 and also has the record for the most batting points above what the rest of the players hit during his particular career from start to finish.
Its amazing that the people who call Cobb a racist, also call him racial names such as "redneck", "hillbilly", "Nazi". Its amazing to see, that when the cream rises to the top, who the REAL racists are. Cobb was a product of early 20th century southern ways. Its always wrong to judge a person out of context by todays standards. Greatest hitter ever.
I can't help but notice...most of his pics on both offense and defense occurred in the infield. We need more players like this who make things happen... who know the game...instead of over medicated gorillas who rely on hitting it over the fence.
Greatest of them all. There are a lot of classic magazine articles written about Cobb by the likes of Ring Lardner and Grantland Rice that are far above anthing to be found in Sports illustrated. Coob holds the record by a long ways for the most hitting points above what the rest of the players hit during the duration of his career. Legend.
it used to be but those bums historians went back, did some research, and changed it to .366 and took a batting title off him...now he only had 11 not 12....i say that's bullcrap...you shouldn't be allowed to change records decades later.
the guy was so good at baseball hes allowed to be racist (he was hardly racist anyways, he was supportive to jackie robinson). Greatest hitter of all time, there wont ever be a hitter like him again.
Great song for one of the meanest S.O.B's and greatest players. Albert Bell was a wimp compared to this guy. Wish we had someone with Cobb's fearless attitude running for President!
this guy was a dick and no one could stand him.. but my god he was one hell of a ball player.. possibly the best

'Nazi', 'Redneck' and 'Hillbilly'.
I agree that name calling is pointless, regardless of opinion.
However, you are wrong to call people racists for using those terms. None of them are racist.
'Redneck' refers to the working class of predominantly 20th century America. A lifestyle insult, not race based one.
'Hillbilly' is pretty much the same - it doesn't refer to hill dwellers, but to the uneducated. They aren't a race.
'Nazism' is a political ideal, and not a race.
Peace
