For one, this was three years ago. Considering how deeply I follow baseball history, I would have heard about this. SOMEWHERE.
For another, the 'real' Dale Gear did not stop after 1901. 'He' managed teams between 1902 and 1914, and was PRESIDENT of importan minor leagues between 1925 and 1932.
