  • Cool, i pretty much worked it out from scratch, but saw a couple of bits here, i learned it 3 days ago, first song on a uke, i worked out about 30 tunes now already, i cant put it down.. Anyway thanks...and upload some more stuff dude!!

    Peaceout from the U.K.

  • Thanks for the lesson! You might try sliding up from 5-3 to 7-5 instead of from 3-2. It is easier and I think this is what he is actually playing. Cheers!

  • Brilliant. First song I'll learn. Thanks for sharing.

  • This is great, thanks so much!

  • Hey bud, good lesson. thanks!

  • Hahaha 1. What i told you is wrong (which isn't true) made me crack up ty for tutorial it really helped :)

  • wow, i started the mandolin just to learn this song too. glad i'm not alone!! thanks for the post

  • Love those chords

  • Looks a lot like the fingering for I am mine

  • I just bought my first mandolin today and thanks to your video I'm already close to being able to play this. Thanks. Great video.

  • I bought a mandolin and I was barely using it.. thank you for making me love my mandolin again.

  • @mikefilmz The violin and the mandolin are strung the same way, so you can easily transition to the mandolin. You would have to learn chords though.

  • Thanks so much for this video. I learned the chords here and just covered the song on my channel. Thanks!! :)

  • Muy buen video, gran talento, saludos desde chile

  • What model is your mandoline? I wanna buy one to learn this song and i really like that one ... great video man! cheers from Chile!

  • @Xeba

It's a Michael Kelly Legacy Plus and I think I paid around $600 but I'm not sure. It was a few years ago. Good luck.

  • thank you so much beautiful song and I almost got it

  • thanx for the lesson. been doing it on guitar while the mandolin sat in it's stand. was helpful!

  • Thanks so much for making this! I love playing this song! :D

  • @mikefilmz Mandolin and violin have the same tuning. I would think that they both have the same complexity.

  • Thanks so much for posting this- It's a perfect song for a guitar to mandolin beginner like me- perfectly paced tuition. This is my "Go To" song when I pick up my mandolin.

  • I would love to see Jethro Tull's Skating away worked out on Mandolin.

Fantastic job on this one, much appreciation!

  • Thanks man, I've only been playing for a week and I already (kind of) can play a song. Now If only I could get a music sheet of it and teach myself to read it.

  • @mikefilmz, I had a similar backround (viola to mandolin), and have been playing the mandolin for about 10 months and absolutely love it. the picking takes awhile to get used to, and the strings require a bit more effort to finger than violin, but other than that, your left hand muscles are totally set up to play mandolin. It would probably help if u had some experience with guitar (for chords), and celtic and/or blues music on the violin (for style).

  • Great!! I try it and send it to you!!

thanks a lot for the tutorial!!

  • Hey man, I just saw your video a couple of days ago and I learned the all song thanks to you! I've recorded me playing it. It's my latest video.

  • what mandolin are you playing? it seems likeyou have lots of space to move your fingers in! i want a good beginner mandolin with good finger space. any recommendations?

  • @mikefilmz

Yes the strings are tuned the same but they're doubled so each finger will press down two strings.

  • This was EXTREMELY helpful! It's a lot easier than it seems too! Thanks! This song is pretty much the reason why I wanted to learn mandolin! :)

  • Wayyy to fast, but helped me nontheless. Thank you!

  • Amaizing lesson, your mandoline sound prety good, what is the model and how much did you pay for? Thx for sharing!

  • Hi very nice Tutorial and very nice playing... play Ukulele but I'm thinking to buy a mandolin...what's your Model and Brand???:) you conviced me!

    greets from Italy

    Daniele Russo

  • I found this video quite helpful. Thanks for taking the time to do this.

  • thx and please keep these coming. i play bass in a cover band and we've been doing more acoustic shows lately and you must save me at least 10 hours of figuring stuff out for each song we're doing where you have a lesson on here.

  • Awesome. Thanks for the excellent lesson.

  • Do you have tabs written out for the song? That would be really helpful!

  • Dude - Thanks so much - well done!! Love this song...appreciate the help!

  • Nice playin man! I was wondering what kina mandolin you have?

  • I am brand new to the mandolin and I can't tell you how much your video has helped me. Thank you! I am slowly getting it. I wish I could find tabs for it.

  • this is awesome, thank you. does eddie play in on mandoline too? excuse me if thats a stupid question.

but would it be possible to play it on guitar creating the same sound?

i just tried but it only worked a little as i tuned all the strings 5 notes higher and using a capo still.

  • Thanks for the lesson and hope you check out my first recording...Thanks again...and it's still a work in progress

  • wow man congrats

  • Sorry i meant 2:49

  • pinkie- 7th fret on the d string, first finger 3rd fret on the a string.

  • Great job, just curious at around 2:39 what is that chord and those few that follow. Just couldn't figure it out because of the quality of my computer

  • actually the video response didnt work.... but still check it out. thanks..... great lesson

  • Thanks for the lesson.... helped me to learn so i could post a video myself... check it out (i put it as a response) much appreciated

  • heck yeah! thanks for posting. I wish I could find all my favorite songs broken down like this!!

  • Actually, that's not quite right...listen closer to the recording. Here's what he's playing using your same pattern...13234, 3231, 323444341, 3234, 3231, 32344434 slide into verse. Try that with the recording, sleepless.

  • Hey , Thank you for the post. It was great !!! Please post more if possible. I personally would go for some Beatles or Bob Marley. Thanx's again !

    peace.

  • I've been playing guitar for 20 years but when I recorded this I'd been playing mandolin for a couple of months.

  • @rjtaweel for someone who's been playing fretted instruments for over 20 years, i would've expected a lot less dead notes. Take some more joy in your mandolin-ing.

    sub-standard, sir. sub-standard.

  • Really great lesson. Thanks a bunch!

  • Thank you so much for this video man, i really apreciatte this, I just borrow a mandolin just to play this song and it would has been completely impossible without your tutorial. Lots of thanks from Spain. Peace.

  • great vid! the tabs online have been useless so thanks a lot! post more vids i'll definitely check em out! cheers

  • THANK YOU!!!!! I had the chords but, YOU finally helped me work out the details!!! Now I rock at Mandolin!!!! POST MORE STUFF!!!

  • damn i was wondering why this wasnt sounding right on an acoustic guitar haha

  • thank you for posting this video, obviously helped out alot of people, one thing tho, is there any way u could send me the picking pattern for the intro, i just cant seem to get it to sound good.. thanks for your time!

  • Finger the G chord and think of the strings as numbered from top to bottom, 1-4. Here's the pattern as I play it: 12324, 4321, 2324434321, 2324, 4321, 232443444 When you're hitting those last 4s you slide up and start singing. I used commas to sort of show where he pauses and to make it a little easier read vice a long string of numbers. Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions.

  • Nice. Thanks. One of my favorites.

  • do you by any chance have tabs for this?

  • I searched the web and found your lesson which I am attempting to master in discrete parts some sound OK when I attempt to play them but others need more practice.

I have a Samick electric/acoustic mandolin which I got it for a bargain price. What I notice now though is that playing chords vigorously soon makes the instrument go out of tune by making the A and E strings sharp. Could this type of playing be causing the bridge to move and is there any cure?

PS what pick do you use?

  • Many thanks for posting this lesson great video; great tutorial; and a lovely mandolin. You have been a life saver to me. I have been tinkling on the mandolin for a few years now, mostly playing jigs and reels. But recently have become depressed about my playing and its lack of progress and have considered selling my instrument. Then by chance I heard this record for the first time last week and was completely knocked out by the clarity and tonal quality of the mandolin playing. I

  • TOTALY AWESOME BRA!!

  • great lesson and a very nice sounding mandolin! thank you!

  • your lesson was the best i found on youtube. for any song. Thanks!

  • Dude, thank you so much for this. I figured most of it out on my own, but there were a few sketchy parts still, and you cleared it all up for me.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to do this.

  • It's for things like this that I'm grateful for technology. Great job man! Can't wait to get home and play this!

  • really? darn it!

I was looking at one for like 70 dollars, I dont know how to play it, Im just want to learn it and hopefully move up, but thanks for the info man!

  • Im musically disfigured, haha Im terrible at every instrument, but I do play a mean ukulele, how much does a bad ass mandolin go for, Id love to get one man, youve just pumped me up to get one, thank you!

  • You can get a cheap mando for around $60 online. The cheaper the mando though, the harder it is to play.

  • Paulcran, master of the obvious, pakia84 is correct. If I played it normal speed what's the point? It's slow so people can learn it, kinda like you.

  • @rjtaweel well played sir!

  • @rjtaweel nice one haha

  • @Paulcran DUH!!!!!!! he's trying to teach the song, not just play it you dumb ass

  • so awesome thank you!

  • cool!! just picked up a mandolin 3 days ago! I will learn this song and video it for you!!! You can look for it in a month or so:)

  • thx for the video.:P

  • thanks a lot I've been looking everywhere to find this thanks.

  • can you tell me plz details of your mandolin. strings brand price etc

    thnx anyway

    good lesson

  • Mandolin is a Michael Kelly Legacy Plus which should run about $600 and I use D'Addario phosphor bronze light strings.

  • Thank you...this was extremely helpful in learning the song.

  • Thanks very much, had that tune bouncing around in my head for the year or so since the Movie and soundtrack.

It popped into my head again yesterday, I looked it up on YouTube, pulled out and tuned up my Mando( I am a Guitar palyer mostly)...and within 5 minutes I am playing and singing the song.

Thanks a Million Bro, Appreciate the effort!!

  • One thing i can never figure out is to play the guitar. I love music so much but it just looks so difficult. I have a acoustic guitar but i just get too frustrated. Such a beautiful song and you play it so well. Great job!!!

  • My thoughts are: everyone knows how to play guitar, they just don't know where to put their fingers. Maybe a little too simple a view, but if you really love music like you say, it would be worth it for you. Guitar is actually one of the easier instruments. You'd be surprised how easy it is to learn a few chords and strum out a song. Give it a shot. Exercise some patience and you might be surprised. Good luck.

  • thankyouthankyouthankyou!!!!!

  • very nice

  • Thank you so much, fantastic work, i wish you lived near me and could be my mando teacher! I started playing today, and almost have this whole song finished!

  • I wanted to say thanks- I used to play mandolin about 20 years ago. The movie soundtrack from Into the Wild inspired me to pick it up again. I looked all over the web for help on this song and your video helped more than anything I could find. Now I can play Rise fairly well thanks to your help. I very much appreciate it. I hope you produce more lessons- maybe some Celtic songs or Bluegrass.

  • Very nice lesson. What kind of mandolin is that? Any suggestions for what kind of mandolin to get for a beginner?

  • It's a Michael Kelly (I forget what model, I'm traveling right now and don't have it handy.) The problem with buying a mandolin for the first time comes down to price vs how much you think you'll like it. I started with an $80 one from Musican's Friend and then moved to the MK ($600) when I realized I liked it. Solid woods make it sound better and a radiused fingerboard make it easier to play. Look at your budget, think about what's important to you, and go from there.

  • I think I'll do what you did and go for a cheap one to begin with. I'll take what you said in account about the wood later on if I become more interested. Have fun traveling.

And please upload some more videos when you're done traveling, it would be very handy.

  • Sweet.

  • what a beautiful mandolin!

  • Thank you. this is one of my favorite songs. I tried playing it by myself on mandolin, but your video showed me I was missing some details. Thanks again.

  • I'm going to tune my mandolin up now!

It sounds quite good on ukulele too, and guitar if you use a capo on the 5th fret for eg.

  • wow, thanks a lot for posting this!! I don't play mandolin- I play my grandfather's old old mandolin banjo instead, and you probably know it's just a mandolin with a banjo head so it sounds pretty cool. You did a 100% accurate job, so thanks!!

  • very nice, thanks!!!

  • i just bought my mando for this song... washburn MIK, and this is by far my favorite song right now... and i have the song down pretty good thanks to you... any chance of another lesson? i've probably watched this video a million times, but thanks for teaching it exactly as it sounds on the soundtrack!

  • you did a very good job!!! thanks so much for making this video! thanks thanks thanks!!!!!

  • thats pimp!

  • Great video!

Any chance of any new mandolin tutorials? :)

  • I am thinking about doing another one but I'm not some accomplished mandolin player, I picked up the mando just to learn this song, so I'm not sure how helpful it would be. Probably just the basics of how to play, how the mando and guitar differ, and how take some guitar songs and play them on the mando. Would that be helpful? Let me know and maybe I'll make another.

  • Hi!

It would be still great to see some more videos, especially for beginners, as it's hard to find some useful mando stuff on YT. Also the one about playing guitar songs on mandolin sounds interesting.

    Best regards from Germany

  • Best 2nd date ever! Not sure anyone else could pull that off in less than 10 minutes. Very impressive...and handsome too!

  • omg... thank u so much!!!!

I just got my mandolin, spent forever tuning it and this is officially my first song ever! u make it sooooo much easier!!!!

    Thanks a lot!!!

  • I officially love you man, Ive played guitar flatpick style/fingerpick for 5 years. but ive never played mandolin. but its probably the second most beautiful instrument next to the acoustic guitar. this is my fav song bro, thanks for puttin in the work.

  • Can't thank you enough for this man. I got my mandolin a few days ago and your help has started a whole new chapter of life for me. Theres a wheelbarrel of thanks for ya.

  • wow, thanks for posting lesson, cheers!!

  • Bobo!!! Great job, dude.

Can you guess who this is! Give ya a hint, my name rhymes with barracuda. Good luck!

  • I don't play the guitar yet.... but i'm interested in how this song plays as it's usch a beautiful song and seems so basic but sounds so peculiar.

Your video seems very accurate in accoradance with how Rise is. Once I get my guitar and a bit of skill I will most likely be referring back to your video. You especially seem more reliable since you don't come across as a douche like alot (of americans, sorry no offfense) on youtube!

  • great job mate!!!!

  • that is great!! nice job my friend, and thank you

  • Excellent, thanks!

  • Good stuff. I love the song.
