Cool, i pretty much worked it out from scratch, but saw a couple of bits here, i learned it 3 days ago, first song on a uke, i worked out about 30 tunes now already, i cant put it down.. Anyway thanks...and upload some more stuff dude!!
Thanks for the lesson! You might try sliding up from 5-3 to 7-5 instead of from 3-2. It is easier and I think this is what he is actually playing. Cheers!
Thanks so much for posting this- It's a perfect song for a guitar to mandolin beginner like me- perfectly paced tuition. This is my "Go To" song when I pick up my mandolin.
Thanks man, I've only been playing for a week and I already (kind of) can play a song. Now If only I could get a music sheet of it and teach myself to read it.
@mikefilmz, I had a similar backround (viola to mandolin), and have been playing the mandolin for about 10 months and absolutely love it. the picking takes awhile to get used to, and the strings require a bit more effort to finger than violin, but other than that, your left hand muscles are totally set up to play mandolin. It would probably help if u had some experience with guitar (for chords), and celtic and/or blues music on the violin (for style).
what mandolin are you playing? it seems likeyou have lots of space to move your fingers in! i want a good beginner mandolin with good finger space. any recommendations?
Cheers for the run through, love this song. Played it down the pub and it went down a storm. Thanks for the help makes life easy for us, too busy to figure it out ourselves, sorts
great lesson. got the basics in about an hour, which is nice cos this is the first time I'd heard it. Great balance of ease of use and quick lesson! Nice one!!
Thank you for posting this. I had not heard of Eddie Vedder or this song or movie before, but your video came up in my try this list. I was intrigued by the arrangement in itself and have now listened to this great song. Thanks again for breaking it down and sharing same. I have almost got there with it.
Hi, any chance you could post details of what you're doing in the bridge - it's hard to tell in the vid what your 2nd/3rd fingers are up to and my eyes aren't the greatest. Thanks!

Great job, just curious at around 2:39 what is that chord and those few that follow. Just couldn't figure it out because of the quality of my computer
Actually, that's not quite right...listen closer to the recording. Here's what he's playing using your same pattern...13234, 3231, 323444341, 3234, 3231, 32344434 slide into verse. Try that with the recording, sleepless.

thank you for posting this video, obviously helped out alot of people, one thing tho, is there any way u could send me the picking pattern for the intro, i just cant seem to get it to sound good.. thanks for your time!
Finger the G chord and think of the strings as numbered from top to bottom, 1-4. Here's the pattern as I play it: 12324, 4321, 2324434321, 2324, 4321, 232443444 When you're hitting those last 4s you slide up and start singing. I used commas to sort of show where he pauses and to make it a little easier read vice a long string of numbers. Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions.
I searched the web and found your lesson which I am attempting to master in discrete parts some sound OK when I attempt to play them but others need more practice.
I have a Samick electric/acoustic mandolin which I got it for a bargain price. What I notice now though is that playing chords vigorously soon makes the instrument go out of tune by making the A and E strings sharp. Could this type of playing be causing the bridge to move and is there any cure?
Many thanks for posting this lesson great video; great tutorial; and a lovely mandolin. You have been a life saver to me. I have been tinkling on the mandolin for a few years now, mostly playing jigs and reels. But recently have become depressed about my playing and its lack of progress and have considered selling my instrument. Then by chance I heard this record for the first time last week and was completely knocked out by the clarity and tonal quality of the mandolin playing. I
Im musically disfigured, haha Im terrible at every instrument, but I do play a mean ukulele, how much does a bad ass mandolin go for, Id love to get one man, youve just pumped me up to get one, thank you!
Thanks very much, had that tune bouncing around in my head for the year or so since the Movie and soundtrack.
It popped into my head again yesterday, I looked it up on YouTube, pulled out and tuned up my Mando( I am a Guitar palyer mostly)...and within 5 minutes I am playing and singing the song.
One thing i can never figure out is to play the guitar. I love music so much but it just looks so difficult. I have a acoustic guitar but i just get too frustrated. Such a beautiful song and you play it so well. Great job!!!
My thoughts are: everyone knows how to play guitar, they just don't know where to put their fingers. Maybe a little too simple a view, but if you really love music like you say, it would be worth it for you. Guitar is actually one of the easier instruments. You'd be surprised how easy it is to learn a few chords and strum out a song. Give it a shot. Exercise some patience and you might be surprised. Good luck.
Thank you so much, fantastic work, i wish you lived near me and could be my mando teacher! I started playing today, and almost have this whole song finished!
I wanted to say thanks- I used to play mandolin about 20 years ago. The movie soundtrack from Into the Wild inspired me to pick it up again. I looked all over the web for help on this song and your video helped more than anything I could find. Now I can play Rise fairly well thanks to your help. I very much appreciate it. I hope you produce more lessons- maybe some Celtic songs or Bluegrass.
It's a Michael Kelly (I forget what model, I'm traveling right now and don't have it handy.) The problem with buying a mandolin for the first time comes down to price vs how much you think you'll like it. I started with an $80 one from Musican's Friend and then moved to the MK ($600) when I realized I liked it. Solid woods make it sound better and a radiused fingerboard make it easier to play. Look at your budget, think about what's important to you, and go from there.
I think I'll do what you did and go for a cheap one to begin with. I'll take what you said in account about the wood later on if I become more interested. Have fun traveling.
And please upload some more videos when you're done traveling, it would be very handy.
Thank you. this is one of my favorite songs. I tried playing it by myself on mandolin, but your video showed me I was missing some details. Thanks again.
wow, thanks a lot for posting this!! I don't play mandolin- I play my grandfather's old old mandolin banjo instead, and you probably know it's just a mandolin with a banjo head so it sounds pretty cool. You did a 100% accurate job, so thanks!!
i just bought my mando for this song... washburn MIK, and this is by far my favorite song right now... and i have the song down pretty good thanks to you... any chance of another lesson? i've probably watched this video a million times, but thanks for teaching it exactly as it sounds on the soundtrack!
I am thinking about doing another one but I'm not some accomplished mandolin player, I picked up the mando just to learn this song, so I'm not sure how helpful it would be. Probably just the basics of how to play, how the mando and guitar differ, and how take some guitar songs and play them on the mando. Would that be helpful? Let me know and maybe I'll make another.
It would be still great to see some more videos, especially for beginners, as it's hard to find some useful mando stuff on YT. Also the one about playing guitar songs on mandolin sounds interesting.
I officially love you man, Ive played guitar flatpick style/fingerpick for 5 years. but ive never played mandolin. but its probably the second most beautiful instrument next to the acoustic guitar. this is my fav song bro, thanks for puttin in the work.
Can't thank you enough for this man. I got my mandolin a few days ago and your help has started a whole new chapter of life for me. Theres a wheelbarrel of thanks for ya.
I don't play the guitar yet.... but i'm interested in how this song plays as it's usch a beautiful song and seems so basic but sounds so peculiar.
Your video seems very accurate in accoradance with how Rise is. Once I get my guitar and a bit of skill I will most likely be referring back to your video. You especially seem more reliable since you don't come across as a douche like alot (of americans, sorry no offfense) on youtube!
Cool, i pretty much worked it out from scratch, but saw a couple of bits here, i learned it 3 days ago, first song on a uke, i worked out about 30 tunes now already, i cant put it down.. Anyway thanks...and upload some more stuff dude!!

I'm going to tune my mandolin up now!
It sounds quite good on ukulele too, and guitar if you use a capo on the 5th fret for eg.

wow, thanks a lot for posting this!! I don't play mandolin- I play my grandfather's old old mandolin banjo instead, and you probably know it's just a mandolin with a banjo head so it sounds pretty cool. You did a 100% accurate job, so thanks!!

Any chance of any new mandolin tutorials? :)

Hi!
It would be still great to see some more videos, especially for beginners, as it's hard to find some useful mando stuff on YT. Also the one about playing guitar songs on mandolin sounds interesting.
Best regards from Germany

I don't play the guitar yet.... but i'm interested in how this song plays as it's usch a beautiful song and seems so basic but sounds so peculiar.
Your video seems very accurate in accoradance with how Rise is. Once I get my guitar and a bit of skill I will most likely be referring back to your video. You especially seem more reliable since you don't come across as a douche like alot (of americans, sorry no offfense) on youtube!
