well technically upon its creation the USA had two major languages. German and English with a large french speaking population as well.. but the federal governing system is the only thing i want to take and history has proved that that style of governing works. moreover you cannot link how government represents various states to a country's economic problems.

In the USA if a state is not performing well the rest of the USA will make up for and subsidise that state for free without the state needing to borrow the money and pay back with interest. But in the EU Ireland and Greece are forced to borrow the money to help their economy but they must pay back the money and on top of that they must pay it back with high interest.
