  • IN Italy they made him say: Mom!

  • maybe his mom was a hippie

  • Hahahahaha holy fuck. Once you learn it's actually "Moon Child" you can understand it a lot more clearly now...

  • His dad was to embarrassed to let him know that "Moon Child" was actually her stripper name..

  • @th3haz ha ha ha lol

  • he should have yelled bitch it would have been perfect

  • it sounds like hes saying rosanna

  • In the French version he said "Arina" ....which is just a usual name for a girl :-/

  • After all these comments and no Frank Zappa joke?

It's too bad Tami Stronach (actress's name who played the Empress) wasn't Moon Unit Zappa's child, then this would have made a HELL Of a lot more sense.

  • The 'mom's name' thing was made up in the movie. In the book, Bastian named her Moonchild. I guess they wanted it to somehow make more sense, but...Moonchild isn't exactly a regularly used name (as lots of people have pointed out...haha). The book was also German originally, so you can blame it on translation/culture difference *shrug

  • Why would he call her that? Does she have a fat ass or something???

  • i think it wouldda been better if no one knew what was the name he said so everyone could imagine a name

  • Nope... definitely "Madonna"

  • He yells "Moonchild". Clear as day. In the books, that's the name he gives to the Childlike Empress, but not sure if that's actually his mother's name

  • At least it wasn't Pliot Inspektor, Jermajesty or Moon Unit.

  • I always thought it was "Mariah". Moonchild is just... idiotic.

  • i guess she was a hippie with a name like that.

  • why "moonchild" is what i wanna know... his mom's name was moonchild?? ok then.

  • in the book he never says it's her mother's name. i have no idea why he says that in the movie.

strange name for a person, moonchild, innit?

  • what

  • We used to get into fierce, almost violent arguments over what this kid said. Thanks to wikipedia and this video, a twenty year mystery has been solved; and neither I, nor my friends, were right. Haha.

  • @EveOfTomorrow ummm i wonder what your and your friends theories were on what was the name bastian gave the empress?

  • Wow...I've wanted to know this most of my life. My mother told me once that he shouted the name of his mother, but I guess momma is wrong lol.

  • because he explains that after the princess asks what he said. bastien says it was his mothers name. its in the next scene.

  • I always thought he said "Mooochareeld!" :o What ever that is.. Lol I'm glad we all found out what it really was.

  • i like the spoof they did on robot chicken

  • lol i thought he said "mokuchald"

  • thanks. i've been trying to figure out what he said for over 20 years!! Then again, now that the mystery is gone I'm kinda sad.

  • @kitjones25 Ditto

  • @kitjones25 my question is...when this was released 20nyears ago..and they were reviewing it for its release..LOL (I just know they realized it couldn't be heard) why did they leave us in such a state of mystery??!! LOL

  • you're not supposed to hear what he says at this part, but he does in fact say moonchild. check the screenplay, the audio was edited this way on purpose.

  • Scary...

  • I always thought he said "Mariah".

  • anybody knows the name of the film where the main character was in a room full of mirrors and has to break all the mirrors with his sword to kill the villain?

    it's an old movie (1970s/80s) periodic/fantasy.

  • That's Conan the Barbarian :)

  • It's Conan the Destroyer, the second Conan movie, made in 1985, with Grace Jones too.

  • lol I thought he said 'Montreal'

  • thanks now i know what he says....i could never understand what he said but now i do....moon child

  • I don't think he says "Moon Child". The first part of the word doesn't sound like "Moon".

  • Actually he does say 'Moon Child'. However, in the book he says 'wicasa-maka' which is significant to the new moon. But YES he does say 'Moon Child' in this clip.

  • I reflect everyone else's comments. THANK YOU!! What's it been... 20some years since this film came out, and I never knew what he was saying either. Seems absurd that such an important part in the story would be so impossible for everyone to decipher. They should have done a retake on that scene.

  • I agree. I mean, honestly, didn't the sound editors listen to this part?

  • Moonchild...

I've played this clip probably 300 times over the span of my childhood and never could decipher what the heck he said.

    Now I know........son of a Moonchild!!!

  • I just saw this for the first time about a month ago and my friend was like "I've never understood what he said...it sounds like Mosiah" and I said, "I thought it sounded kinda like Moonchild" so we looked it up and I was right! He (my friend) is 29 and grew up on this movie and he says I ruined his childhood. Hahah! :)

  • Uh yeah, this has always been one of my fave movies. I've seen it like 300 times, and I never knew what he said. "Moon child" is kind of a stupid name though. I thought he was saying Mariah or something. His mother must have been a hippie! haha

  • Just finished watching this movie today. Thank you^^ I never could make out what he said, had no idea it was Moon Child. Now I know^^ yay! That been bugging me for the longest time, because they never say her name in the 2nd or 3rd one. Just kept calling her "Childlike Empress" or "Empress".

  • I swear to God, for the weirdest reason ever I thought that he was yelling his mom's name (thought I never could tell what he was saying, exactly)

Now that I think about it, it would've been really pretty and sentimental if he would've named her after his mom... Moonchild seems too random to me x3

  • He does say that he'd name her after his mother, before finding out that he is the one who has to name her. If I'm not mistaken, Moonchild (in german) was Bastian's mother's name in the novel (and, it seems, in the movie as well).

  • He only says that in the English version though, he doesn't in the German one and it's not in the novel either.

He calls her "Moon Child" (or Mondenkind), because that's what she looks like to him (especially with the white hair she has in the novel). He HAS to use his imagination, so he definitely can't just name her after his mother.

  • my thoughts exactly.

  • wow. i have NEVER figured out what he yelled. thank you SO much for clearing that up for me. now i can actually hear him say it.
