This started because Michael Weatherly (Tony) was goofing around during a scene and Mark Harmon (Mark) slapped him on the head. The directors/crew/writers thought that was perfect so they soon start writing it into the script, it became the "Gibbslap" as fans called it. Recent seasons have toned the headslaps down due to the fact that poor Michael Weatherly was getting headslapped all the time by people even when he's out shopping for groceries.
