this is ridiculous! do you iFanatic know what a widget is? what you are showing here is am app to fake widgets. live with the fact that you cannot have an
@QaTQattheFirst Yeah, asshole. They're the things Mac users have been using for the past 10 years, that Google ripped off from OS X so they could "one up" the iPhone, while introducing a new set of security vulnerabilities. Apple may very well introduce them in the future, but if so, it will be done well... not in the bleeding edge "pay to beta test" manner that Google does it.
@SteveAlbinisPussy why do you get so agitated iBoy? are you an apple evangelist or what? stop fighting with everyone on this page and live with the fact that
The whole point of widgets is that you don't have wait for an app to start. The information should be available for quick easy access without waiting for an app to load. Hopefully, Apple will include widgets in their next version of iOS.
@LocoYoFla I really hope that Apple implements them, and yes, you are right. We should not need to use an app. At least there is an app now that lets us use them though
@DangleKingPC They did, years ago, in OS X. It's more of something you'd want on a desktop system. But you know, one-upmanship. Droid doesn't have the apps, so they make a big deal out of some near-useless feature. Now you can look at weather without clicking the weather app, but then you need to move that shit off screen in order to run an app. D'oh!
@SteveAlbinisPussy In my opinion, Google doesn't have as good of usability as Apple. A friend is trying to sell me on droid and brought up the widgets. The TR article mentioned running the kill task application and using a 3rd party home screen launcher. Jeeze, do they do usability testing on Ubuntu contributors? They're clueless as to what regular mom & pop users are willing to dick around with. I'll take the better material science, screen, and 10 times the apps of the iPhone over widgets!!!
@SteveAlbinisPussy I also noticed, on a Droid Incredible video on YouTube, it appears Droid has completely ripped off the Exposé animation effect. Apple are the innovators. Google are the imitators. Even with their search engine, they did the same one-upmanship. Ooooh, we have page ranking! Google can't originate a product. They can just take an existing product, make something similar (but not as good) and try to convince people that something like widgets is better than a Retina display...
@SteveAlbinisPussy You are, of course, praising a company that stole the GUI from xerox, which ended up changing the world of computing. You are talking about a company created by a man proud of his theft from xerox, who then got apoplectically angry because Gates stole the idea from him. Please do not get all high an mighty about Apple and their "innovation." They are thieves just like anyone else. Has Google stolen ideas? Sure, just as much as Apple has. No one is "clean."
@JBenteu Have you actually *seen* the Alto system? It doesn't really resemble the Mac that much at all. The notion of doing GUI interfaces was widespread in computer science before the Alto existed. Apple just made the first computer that did it well enough for people to buy it. They're great at making consumer products because they do it by the book. They do the market research, figure out what the customer wants, and delivers it. Google? Do consumers really want widgets? No.
@JBenteu "Apple did not "rip-off" the Macs UI from Xerox. Apple had hired some people from Xerox (like Jef Raskin, Bruce Horn) who believed in concepts of a Graphical User Interface. These concepts are pretty broad -- like making a computer easier to use by using graphics (icons), using menus, windows and making a consistent interface to do things. The work on these concepts predates Xerox PARC-- in fact it was many of these peoples individual work on those concepts that got them hired at PARC."
@DangleKingPC If Apple implements it, the delay is most likely that they want to do it well. The droid widgets are resource hogs, and when I have read about them you need to dick around with the task killer and 3rd party home screen launchers. Jesus H. Christ, it's easier to just click on the weather icon. I'll wait until Apple gets it right. This is Google's attempt at one-upmanship. Everything is a beta version with those cunts.
@DangleKingPC Um, widgets are apps. They're not part of the OS, they are an app. People get confused as to where the OS ends and where applications begin. Just because there is stuff that comes with your smart phone doesn't mean it is part of the OS. I know someone who claims that speech recognition is integrated into the OS on Android. No it isn't. It records a sound file, sends it off to a web service, and that returns the text. You can't use it offline. It's not part of the OS.
@SteveAlbinisPussy For example, how do you kill a widget on Android? You use an app killer app. They're apps, there is just a slightly different use case than a "regular" app. There are some good things about widgets, and believe me, they have been in OS X for almost a decade now. But the bad thing about Android widgets is that they allow third party developers to make modifications to system settings. That's not a good idea! But with the hoaky-ness of changing settings in Sense UI, it's useful.
@LocoYoFla In my opinion widgets in app is great, but it requires real multitasking, then you have quick access. And I really really love idea of widgets in app, it's just simpler.
@tauttvisz yeah it does need multitasking, i will have an update video if they add it. and me too, however, i wish they did implement it any way into the os.
@LocoYoFla They have had them for some time in OS X. I wonder how much sense they make for small screens? I see Google ripped off CoverFlow in Honeycomb too. Apple usually goes for user experience over bleeding edge technology... For example, iTunes downloads vs. Streams... Customers hate the end user experience of streaming media... Even my cable box's on demand sucks compared to iTunes...
@LocoYoFla Does anyone at all see a security flaw in allowing 3rd party developers to make changes to system resources? This opens up a whole new world of malware (especially in the anarchy of the Android market place). You can download some app that seems innocuous, but it turns on your bluetooth or LED flash at 4am, draining your battery or waking you up. Android is lacking in security features, and it shows in the numerous exploited vulnerabilities. iPhones are fast, what's the wait? 1/2 sec?
@LocoYoFla I don't mind if they put in dashboard widgets, like on OS X. I don't want some ugly clock on the screen, with super-huge numbers like I am some senior citizen. If iPhone users are envious of that, it's pretty pathetic (and you can easily get that ugly flip-clock from numerous app developers). I don't want some crap that some dude in B.F.E. developed that gets into my system settings. So it takes 3 clicks to toggle bluetooth. On an iPhone 4, it's a fast UI, so it's instantaneous fast.
