Wonderful song. Cheggers involvement is utterly bizzare...Oddly enough I first heard it during the punk wars, when as previously noted, one J Rotten played it on Capital Radio.
Merciless Beauty .:. (part 1) oh your two eyes will slay me suddenly I may the beauty of them not sustain so pierced is throughout my heart keen unless your words will heal me hastily my heart’s wound while that it is green oh your two eyes will slay me suddenly upon my troth I tell you faithfully that you are of my Life and Death the Queen and with my Death the Truth be seen ...
.:. Merciless Beauty (part 2) ______________ so hath your beauty from my heart chased Pity that it avails not to complain for Pride doth hold your Mercy in its chain guiltless my death hath ye purchased I say you sooth there is no need to feign so hath your beauty from my heart chased alas that Nature hath in your embrace beauty so great that no man may attain to Mercy though he starve for pain .:. ~ by Geoffrey Chaucer 14th century mythic storyteller and poet .:.
'the tale is a farce' well how good Shakespeare's Macbeth may be, or even is, indeed that's Art but at the time of writing it had political content, also wanting to please the new English king's intrest in witches, Shakespeare based himself on stories that were already far from 'truth' as the Anglo-Norman victors wrote history to their liking, with no understanding of Mac Beth's Celtic An Alba.
Whoever feels up to it can indeed write a play that'll stand for your 500 years
@thallassocracy Even weirder...Johnny Rotten picked this out as one of this favourite songs when he did a Capital Radio show with Tommy Vance in 1977.
@BMDHB MacBeth a FARCE? I thought it was a drama- McB is 2nd greatest play EVER- after Hamlet- Some say MaB is best- Shakespeare didn't mire 'Hamlet' in historical accuracy either- Art exists to let man elate in the highest reaches of his creativity and sensibility- History doesn't need a Shakespeare- it needs a Beresford- Let Beresford dramatise his account and see if it's still playing in 500 years :)

This is the only "commercial" song by Third Ear Band. I love this song so much and play it on my guitar.

The words Keith Chegwin sings were written by Geoffrey Chaucer.
The coincidence of Keith Chegwin and Geoffrey Chaucer is one of the strangest things I have ever seen on celluloid.

Great song!
Still, the tale by W.S. is a complete farce,
the historic Mac Beth is a totaly different story. Have a good read by Peter Berresford Ellis
