  • How good to hear a singer who has no need for vibrato to get their point across. Bravo.

  • @ajhiflyer There is a vibrato, although he keeps it under control. It would be impossible to have power without vibrato; however, it is necessary to keep it controlled, what Keenlyside does perfectly.

  • if you dont like his Hamlet listen to somebody else :(

  • It's so nice to hear decent French at the Met... a rarity , esp in the "old" days. The stud who gives him the wine is damn hot too.....:)

  • Whoever thought of inserting the word ENCHANTERESSE into a baritone aria was a total genius...

  • wonderful! He can sing without any voice.

  • ¡¡¡¡Maagniifiiqueee Et Exeeleenceee Chanteur y Acteur...Braavooooo!!!!

  • Nice video, do you have this production on DVD? Or was it released in DVD? Don't you know?

By the way, who is the guy at 0:29?

    Thanks

  • @JohnFalocco it is on metplayer, see Metropolitan opera web, Metplayer is paid, you have to subscribe.

i think there is no dvd from the met production, but there is an older dvd with keenlyside and dessay.

  • At 2:50, the guy standing behind Kennlyside (curly dark hair and brown jacket), is he the one who played Arturo in Lucia at the Met with Dessay on March 2011?

  • @matthieusarah according to what both casts say it is the same guy (Matthew Plenk is Arturo and Matthew Plenk is Marcellus)

  • SIMPLY FANTASTIC

  • His acting is like no other`s. Intense, melancholic, thoughtful... a real Hamlet. And his voice is SO beautiful. (just as much as him)

  • @Transoxiana94 i am watching czech tv now - Don Giovvanni with Simon, and before the performance somebody spoke about it and said Keenlyside is a genius actor:))

  • Oh one of my favorite arias ever!

  • He has the courage to sing in front of an audience without having a voice.

    That deserves respect.

  • @kulturistimarsch You are quite right. His voice doesn't carry well. He has more of a singing actor. I don't know why he was engaged. Maybe some housewives like his looks ;-).

  • @kulturistimarsch That's a bit harsh, don't you think? He has a voice, just not for this role and most certainly not in this house. Let's face it, 40 years ago this man would have been, at the most, a barely adequate Schaunard for the NYC Opera. On the other hand, if Thomas Hampson can sing the title role in BOCCANEGRA at the MET (and get applause, no less!!!) then who can you say no to??

  • @RoyKa2010

i said after having seen this performance that our actors (non singing, normal actors) in our town theatre act worse than he:-) and he can sing to the bargain:-)))) the whole performance was a good acted drama:-))) I like especially SImon ,of course, Ophelia and the Queen.

alas, you neednt be jealous of me, but I have seen it in the cinema at least and have the DVD of Hamlet with SImon K. and N.Dessay:-))

  • @RoyKa2010

you can buy it easily too:-)))

SImon is a better actor than many actors in our town theatre. and definitely much better singer than the opera singers in our theatre :-)))

and (last but not least) much more handsome than any singer or actor in our town theatre.

  • J'aime cette musique malheureusement trop peu chanter

  • this opera is great, it is strange, it wasnt played much:-))) in the past.

  • can´t you put here the scene, when he jumps on the table and is spilt all over his shirt with red wine :-))?

i like this very much, the wine aria. Do you like Simon Keenlyside too??? thank you very much for all the videos , i am going to see them all, am looking forward to it, i couldn´t so far , i was at work.

  • @eurydike Oh this part... Ok!

  • @eurydike I love when he hit the wall...I really thought he had hurt himself for a moment.

  • @LordHettrick

I love this performance. Have you watched the whole opera? He is incredible.

    P.S. I couldnt believe he is fifty...(now 51:-)) )

  • @eurydike Yeah, I was at the Met...Marlis Petersen and he were incredible!

  • @LordHettrick

i envy you so much :-)

    P.S. tell me MORE

  • @eurydike The opera started with a part of the brass section placed on the right (facing the scene) of the highest balcony. They were sounding really strong, it was impressive. Ophelia's aria when she dies during 15 minutes is really difficult, but Marlis Petersen went through it with great virtuosity. The opera is good, but lacks a little twist to make it excellent. However, Keenlyside saved it and made it a great success.

  • @LordHettrick

write more about Simon (he is who interests me most, even if I liked Petersen). What do you think of the strength of his voice? Could he be well heard live?

the advantage of the cinema screen is you see quite well, better than many people in the theatre but the listening...

  • @eurydike The strength of his voice was good. I was on the second balcony and could hear him clearly. Being French Canadian, I found his diction pretty good, I could understand most of what he was singing. But his best point was really his energy. His singing really displayed the emotion and drama of the opera. He was the best asset of the opera.

  • @LordHettrick I liked his acting so much, I have watched it in the cinema. yes, he has really lots of energy. I liked the opera very much, it is a drama and an opera:-))

Some say his voice is not strong enough though. I havent known about him before Hd live hamlet and I was missing very much:-))) He looks very young for his age, doesnt he:-) ?

But i like him very much. He pronounces very well in German, too.

  • @LordHettrick you heard him live. and some comments say here , he doesnt have voice. .. what do you say?

  • @eurydike Nonsense. He has a great, strong voice. I was in Dress circle and could hear him perfectly. I found that he was the main shining point of the whole opera. His acting is of course amazing, but his voice is the voice of one of the greatest current baritone. I really like his diction, his French is excellent.

  • @eurydike I can agree that his voice might seem thin when compared to Hvorostovsky or Robert Merrill, but his voice is more of the light baritone than the full lyric dark baritone. Still, that is like comparing Domingo to Pavarotti for tenors: both have great voices, but just not the same voice type. Keenlyside is a great lyric baritone, with one of the best voices in the world.

  • @LordHettrick Some say even Hvorostovsky doesnt have a big voice.

i like SImon´s voice on recordings and i like how he acts. you say he can be heard even in the MET when you are far from him. so i don´t know where is a problem:-)i think that on the opera stage you should be able to act well too and SImon can do this as well. opera when not only in concert is theatre and singing is very important but not the only point of view how to judge the performance of a singer.

  • @LordHettrick do you know his recordings of song recitals? they are great too:-)

  • @LordHettrick and he has such a clear pronunciation:-)

  • @LordHettrick Didn´t you happen to see the Don Carlo - first night at the MET?

  • @eurydike No, I actually don't live in New York but rather in Montreal; I'll probably see the Don Carlo on the Live HD broadcast. I wouldn't want to miss our Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducting.

Did you see it or see the reviews?

  • he looks so handsomely.

thank you very MUCH for this video. please don´t forget the scene of HAMLET´S death.

or the scene, when he sends ophelia to the monastery or when he fights with laerte... (then is the final scene), or anything with simon:-) anything. but the final scene is great. do you remember him singing and carrying ophelia at the same time?

Is it possible to join the operashare group?how?

  • @eurydike no problem everything is ready to be posted ^^ and to join the OS group isn't easy, you have to send a message to the moderators and if they think you deserve to join the group they accept you

  • @DessayBestSingerII

    what e-mail adress ?

  • @eurydike No idea... I entered the group thanks to a friend who was already a member :-S

  • @eurydike well... I think I uploaded everything you needed... if you want something else just ask ^^

  • @DessayBestSingerII

thank you so much! this is such a great performance, i am so glad i have seen it ... i wouldn´t have learned about Simon if I hadn´t seen Hamlet from MET:-)))

  • i love this aria, first of all when he sings it.

  • Yay I love this aria :)
