  • Oh man, Look at all those desktop icons behind him!

  • Livermorium - all you can eat liver buffet

  • Poliakoffum anyone?

  • Now that's a cluttered desktop.. :D

  • Does anyone know if element 117 has been discovered yet? Because I wanna call it Halovium :) Any Halo lovers will get this (117), plus it would be a Group 7!!!!! HALide!!!! too :P

  • @HELLJUMP3R7 I think that's Ununseptium, but I believe that's only a temporary name.

  • @MrVenat0r Yeah i did see that, do you think there's any way you could start a petition to get it permanently named?

  • livermoride? come on !!!

  • Ё letter is especial in Russian language because a lot of funny and bad words, phrazes and exclamations start with it.

  • "Memoriam"? Makes me think of liver. Something tells me this atom wouldn't be stable for a ns near a sample of C2H5OH.

  • livermorium forsure my hometown! =)

  • I wonder if prime numbers in protons may tease out an awful pattern. shudder to think.

  • I love this guy!

  • Poliakoffium, anyone? For services to chemistry by spreading the love of it to more people than ever before!

  • Livermorium makes me think of alcoholism: in memoriam of my liver. Sad indeed. :(

  • bob lazar and his element 113 or 115 as a UFO fuel

  • @ollobrains1 !! lazarium and hoaxium certainly have a ring to them! (just like their toroidal applications) ;)

  • @CxRax you should see mine :D

  • @CxRax you should see mine :D

  • Clean your blimin desktop up dammit!

  • @CxRax That's his periodic desktop of programs!

  • your desktop looks similar to mine you just lack 20 more icons :)

  • YOUR HAIR IS GOD!

  • Surely it's about time for Davium?

  • ... can't watch these vids anymore ... I only listen .... His hand waving makes me crazy -- neck hurts after 2 minutes - eyes can't stop twitching (at 3 min ) - headache at 4 minutes....

    I listen & enjoy ....

  • @curiousgeorge1940 lol... do you have ADD? take some Ridelin :p

  • Mass icons ftw. (y)

  • I feel the same way about math. It just doesn't keep my interest. But you guys make chem more 'acessible' so to speak.

  • Oh, and nice screensaver XD 5:25

  • Yay, Livermorium! Thanks for naming it after my hometown. :D

  • you have too many icons on your desktop

  • Flerovium reminds me of Rovio lol

  • I'm going to arrange my shortcuts to make a periodic table. :P

  • Livermoorium makes me feel sad because liver is yucky.

  • I just want a element to be named Unobtainamon.

  • i was hoping one was Newtonium

  • I think it sound sad because it reminds me of Mors, the personification of death in Roman mythology.

  • I am SUCH a nerd LOL

i am 14-years-old and all i can think about is chemistry. i have drawn some periodic tables, and I watch this in my free time. yeah, im a keeno, and im a nerd but who cares

  • @Lefty7788tinkatolli go get laid fruit

  • @cluescrollvids wtf does that mean :P

  • @Lefty7788tinkatolli virgin 4 life

  • @cluescrollvids So you're implying that stupidity is more attractive than intelligence?

  • Yep. Livermore (where the Lawrence Lab is located) is a city in Alameda County in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is the same county where Berkeley is located, whose university also has two elements named in its honor (Californium and Berkelium).

  • The 116th icon is named Internet Explorium

  • Liverwurst

  • I am thinking of sodium and potassium. Those always give me a headache when I read a book in english. Why are you not even trying to pronounce those two?

  • I really like your videos .I am a home school educator and I would very much appreciate if you stop my my channel and subscribe.

  • thats a lot of porn Mr. Poliakoff ;)

  • Science between the US and Russia/USSR has always been better than the politics.

  • Anyone else notice how much stuff he's got on his desktop?

  • I hope, there may be an element in future named "Poliakoffium" :-D

  • I swear someone has to name an element for Charles Darwin. Its been too long for life scientists not to be on the periodic table of elements. IUPAC get this, element 115, Darwinium

  • There might be one or two unused icons on that desktop...

  • Do any synthetic elements really have any useful purpose? Yes, it's an impressive feat, but so is running a marathon. How do any elements past 100 actually benefit science?

  • @Kaldosh its more of a search of new substances, and maybe if its possible to get a stable isotope we may experiment more on it

  • Livermorium does sound very sad, sounds a lot like Liverpool.

  • They should name element 115 -- Nazdrovium! Cheers!!!

  • I don't know why I don't kinda like livermorium. ADD the J and Q already!!! I can't spell my name with the chemcial symbols without J.

  • does he ever stop shaking his hands......

  • Livermorium sounds to me like liver... yuuuukk!

  • I think I figured it out; the reason why it sounds so mournful is because it's only five letters off of the word, "NEVERMORE!!!"

    ...Poe reference...

  • He needs to stop moving his hands so much... he also needs a good shearing. The several references to peace between the U.S and Russia are also dumb-founded, the Russian dubna team were adamant that element 116 was to be named Moscovium. 'mirin?

  • @GntMoFo wouldnt they call moskvaium? as Moskva is what russians call Moscow

  • Brady! Can you get the professors view, on how to tackle math problem s in chemistry. I would like to know how he gets his head around the maths which engulfs chemistry :)

    Thank You!

  • I believe the instability is caused because the odd number atoms have the extra proton(s) sitting on the outer edges of geometric spheroid shape... with uneven forces holding them in place they become unstable and are more likely to fall off... same reason for so called radio-active isotopes, unstable protons falling off left right n centre = fissured atom an release of weak nuclear force (I think lol)

  • In memoriam is very much Latin not English.

  • how many icons does he have on his desktop?

  • There's still room for 2 more columns of icons so it's true, your work is never done!

  • Could the Professor be any more adorable? No, I think not. He has achieved the highest level of adorableness that can be stably maintained. He is the chemistry equivalent of kittens and bunnies.

  • A Romney commercial? Really?

  • There are 179 icons on Professor's left desktop and his screen saver appears after about 5 minutes of inactivity.

  • The greater a person is, the more he or she will will get "naturalized" versions of his or her name: there is no "correct" version. We say Charlemagne not Karolus Magnus; so do not worry about Flerovium.

  • So... does this mean we'll have to put his hair back in the ion beam miller to add the two new symbols?

  • Even numbers of both protons and neutrons are more stable due to the spin pairings. Similar in concept to the energy levels of the S-orbital electron states. Just thought I would add that detail in there.

  • @nixs88 That's what I thought, but as a professor of chemistry I think professor poliakoff would know that already if it really were the reason behind the even no. stability.

  • Stop moving your hands!

  • Well yes, you are correct.. There are 179 icons on the desktop.. Then element 179 should be named after the professor!

  • Fl(lv)+ca-po(h2o)-o2= bullshit

  • Come on we should of learned that even numbers are more stable in Grade school.

  • Well this is something that the Cold War gives us that would be for the good. I guess?

  • Livermore was at one point called Nottigham. Neat.

  • ide like more liver

    and onions :P

  • New word for the OED: 'livermoride'. You heard it here first! And on the pronunciation of the other, I suspect few folks will ever pronounce 'flerovium' *at all*... unless a military application is found for it :(

  • Poor choices for both the names and the symbols.

  • Flavorful liver!

  • When I read Wikipedia articles on chemistry, I hear the words in my head in Professor Poliakoff's voice.

  • Wouldn't it be called Livermorium Hydride not Hydrogen Livermoride??

  • @snakeguy76 No, chemists usually list the positive part first. (Hydrogen --> H+)

  • @projectpat0392 You're right, but Livermorium is a metal isn't it? making Hydrogen -1 and the compound a metal hydride? Its kinda to the right I know maybe a metalloid but it should be the Livermorium Hydride

  • Livermorium reminds me of a liver and like someone having more liver hahahahaha

  • Is it not because even numbered elements have full orbitals? Or has that got nothing to do with stability?

  • @obvioushat Orbitals have more to do chemical reactivity than atomic stability. Neon has full orbitals and is chemically unreactive. Oxygen has 2 half-filled orbitals and is reactive. But both elements (even numbered) are stable atoms, but so are nitrogen and fluorine which odd numbered.

  • oh no, confusion with Fluorine xD

  • Flyorovium. Flyorovium. Flyorovium. Flyorovium.

  • Holy.... Your computer screen is almost full. Dude, you need to learn desktop organisation.

  • livermorium is pretty catchy...

  • The professor should give us talk about the number of icons on desktops and why, as the number of them increases, the desktop becomes more unstable....

  • Did the professor have splash guards added to the side of his eyeglasses to make them safe to use in the lab?

Just the sort of thing you notice when looking at someone's face for 6 minutes in HD :)

  • OMG look at all those icons!!!

  • actually there 179 icons on his desktop that is why he is not that stable 00:40

  • Element 117 earthium

  • You would not want to know what the Norwegian word "Livmor" means. Ugh! How could they be so stupid?

  • @SigurdNORWAY Now I am curious as to what "Livmor" means in Norwegian, SigurdNORWAY.

  • @TadRaunch Uterus...

  • @nokia1110 Haha. Well, it happens, I guess.

  • @TadRaunch The Norwegian word for "Livmor" means uterine.

  • Poliakoffnium FTW!

  • Why do the Latin and Russian alphabets have to be different?

  • Element 120: Prolikoffium, and 122, Bradyum, because between the two of them, they've managed to [re]kindle scientific curiosity in more, diverse people, since Dr. Carl Sagan narrated (and [co-]wrote) Cosmos. One thing they share is a passion that is nothing short of addicting.

And I'm going to show my age and/or terrible lack of mojo: what the hell is a snes roms?

  • Element 115- universium

  • i dont understand why the element would smell................

  • That's going to be confused with Flourine.

  • @shaurz Cerium/curium and thallium/thulium are already similar, though.

  • Dear god, that desktop! lol

    I thought mine was bad.

Great video! Good work as usual, Brady.

  • Professor, I was in Brussels last week and I am happy to be back to London...

  • Someone should arrange those shortcuts in a periodic table shape.

  • The prof. needs to learn how to create folders on his desktop

  • Pure want to drag all those folders into one new folder

  • hmmmmm more elements for me to learn for exams

  • Dude seriously need to clean up that desktop!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @alees12345 lol

  • @alees12345 or at least align to grid... its looks like he's just placed them as if it were a grid lol

  • The professor is indeed correct in his assumption that nuclei with even numbered protons and neutrons are more stable and hence more likely to be created in the lab. For those who are interested in finding out why this is, read up on the 'liquid drop model'. A truly spectacular explanation from physics regarding the stability and configuration of nuclei born out of experimental observation and mathematics. :-D

  • @rephl3x There is no official explanation is physics as to why. The best explanation without making any assertions is that nuclei like electric fields follow a quantized pattern which shows itself in atom structure. The thing is there is no functional pattern, just that even tend(but not always) to be more stable.

  • @525047 Physics does provide a satisfactory reason why certain configurations of nucleons are more stable than others and is verified by experimental observation. The stability is related to the binding energy per nucleon within a nucleus. Positive and negative contributions to this overall binding energy are made by various configurations. Of course like any theory there are likely to be factors that have not been considered, the liquid drop model is still a comprehensive explanation though.

  • In Russia elements name you...

  • That's an awful lot of desktop icons the professor has on his PC.. perhaps someone ought to help him arrange them into more convenient folders??

  • 115 should be Elerium

  • Yeah. Why did I think it was only me that was thinking of Livor Mortis? That or liver memoriam, i.e. after a saturday night out on the town

  • Comment removed

  • Me thinks that if the element 116 is the smelliest element of the table it should be called Farthorium.

  • How many icons....

  • Livermorium just makes me think of liver mortis X3

  • Oh, word! That's more smelly than Livermorium!

  • So is his name Фльоров?

  • @kaziklu79 His name is Георгий Николаевич Флёров, ё as "yo" in yogurt

  • Hehehehehehe, now you have to make videos for these elements... :D

  • Maybe we could ask pronunciationmanual how he pronounces Flerovium ...

  • I have a couple of friends who live in Livermore, California (site of the Lab) who might agree with the potentially smelly connection with Element 118 and the city itself...

  • dayum that computer desktop

  • Lv.....Louis Vuitton..

  • @nyanmiaw 1:06 dude. 1:06

  • I love seeing new videos posted from Periodic Videos!!! Ah, you just made my Friday night!

  • Fl could be Flerovium or some-kind of Fluorine-Iodine compound, anything with the small L in it has that problem, not perfect.

  • Look closely at his PC screen at the beginning of the video. The icons will appear to shrink and expand! Trippy.

  • Still no letters J or Q in any symbol of the periodic table. We need an element with a symbol of Jq or Qj.

  • There are so many famous chemists left after which the IUPAC could name elements...

  • your computer desk top is almost full.

i should make a short film on the history of professors desktop.

  • This guy needs to put his hands down

  • Flavaflavium?

  • Live-no-more!

  • too many icons on that computer's desktop O.o

  • You think the prof has too many icons, I've filled one screen and there's a few on my second monitor.

  • While you're at cleaning up your desktop, you might as well clean up your desk top, too.

  • Clean that desktop professor!

  • Dude, that's a lot of desktop shortcuts. It needs to be tidy professor! but other than that... keep up the good work on the videos, both of you :)

  • one person is lady gaga fan

  • wtf icons o.o

  • Element 180 should be named after the professor, because of the 180 icons on the desktop!

  • @rkan2 I only see 179 =D

  • @rkan2 wow good job. You actually got me to check your number... indeed 180 icons. gj

  • @Dracanic I actually just read other comments saying it was 180, that's why it went wrong. :P

  • @rkan2 Only 179 icons on his desktop.

  • @07BlackCobaltLS I hope there are folders with more stuff inside.

  • @rkan2 Bottom right hand corner is missing: 179!

  • @rkan2 Check again, bottom right corner of his screen. It's 179.

  • @rkan2 I can only count 179 icons.

  • @rkan2 there are actually only 179. theres one missing at the bottom :P

  • @rkan2 u should really look back at ur comment!

  • @NarutoSSj6 Why? :O Because of one too many icon?
