  • They made all the right decisions...When i was a kid...i thought that it was the perfect record...What could be more beautiful than what they made?

  • fantasic

  • I loved the blondie one, so i decided to watch this one. Amazing. I love audio engineering.

  • Amazing

  • absolutely facinating...

  • Awesome!

  • excellent!!!

  • Brilliant!!!!

  • actually - I take that back its great. My bad!

  • great documentary - very cheezy graphics. sri good sound but fail!

  • How excited must they have been as this was all coming together for the first time!

  • I feel this documentary explains a treasured secret that none of us should know about. I still find utilising "musique concrete" production techniques more emotive than idly pushing preset buttons on keyboards or softsynths. Though the genie secret has been explained, the band earn higher regard & the elegance of this track is not destroyed. I can never forget the combined sound that summer day in 1975 when I first heard this on the radio. I hope Kathy Warren earned a few quid off this too!

  • What an amazing record. I love documentaries like this! Thank you!

  • Recording all these voices across the chromatic scale, putting them on an endless loop of tape and playing the mixing board like it was an instrument has an almost Mellotron-ish quality to it!

  • French singer Eric Charden re-recorded one of his 60s hits (Le monde est gris, le monde est bleu) in 1978, trying to emulate this effect.

  • I love how creative and inoative this song was and still is. Especially when you realise it was all done before the invention of the digital sampler.

Much love for this song ;) x

  • Talk about doing it the hard way...Artists in search of the sound in their head.

    Fascinating.

  • Ethereal.

Like floating on a cloud surrounded by

    singing angels.

    Achingly beautiful.

    Haunting

  • where are these "making of" videos coming from - are there more - as an engineer producer - I'm addicted - AudioMystic - are these from a series of sorts ?

  • Thumbs if "Ladies and Gentlemen, we are done recording" photo album from Foo Fighters Facebook page sent you here!

  • Analog, baby.

  • the creation of a a masterpiece back to a time when creativity and adventure made music, not like boring predictable crap of today !!!

  • I've loved this song and 10CC's and Godley and Creme's other work too. But now seeing how it was made I'm even more amazed and impressed by it. Thank you so much for sharing this documentary!

  • Spent all that money inventing and trying to sell the Gizmo without realising they'd already invented the sampler.

  • This song is so magical.. I've loved it since it came out. What a great surprise to find this documentary!!

  • This song has the whole enchilada !

  • Reminds me of my Lost Love....

  • This documentary justifies the 36 years that I've loved this classic single. It reached #2 on The Billboard Hot 100 in 1975 and spent 3 weeks in that position with the distinction of being held out of the top spot by 3 different #1 hits. Their next biggest single in America, "The Things We Do For Love," was another top five hit but a major creative letdown compared to "I'm Not In Love."

  • Ahh, the days when you had to improvise production of songs instead of just using a piece of software. I know you can't stand in the way of progress, but sometimes making things easier takes the creativity out of it. I could listen to stuff like this all day long.

  • Used to steal this trick a bit. ALWAYS awesome.

  • Absolutely Brilliant!

  • THanks for this - it explains the process of how and why this song sounds so sublime - all to be told, "I'm not in love," but how wonderfully told - makes breaking up an eloquent work of art

  • This is what makes me so much respectful of the veterans in this music game! Excellent information and a wealth of history and education!

  • Thanks for the upload. Very educational.

  • INTERESTING.......

  • 10cc was Brilliant and way ahead of their time. Thanks again for this documentary on YouTube.

  • just a stunning stunning track.Euphoric

  • THANK YOU FOR POSTING.

  • AMAZING!!!!

  • Great song when I was growing up, and still one of my favorites today. Now that I know the actual work and "soundcrafting" they did, I appreciate it more.

  • me too, thanks Steve : )

  • Steve Shelley sent me here

  • Now I understand why, when I was just 16, that this seemed like the most innovative, electronic sound I had heard so far in spite of new wave, Brian Eno, etc. I now listen to a lot of progressive electronic music and after giving this another deep listen, it all sounds kind of flat to me in comparison. Amazing.

  • With the demise of the Beatles, UK pop sensibilities soon slid away from 'production' and any level of 'deep' musical creativity. Bowie was blossoming, Mott were succumbing to Top of the Pops, Bolan had lost the plot... and Johnny Lydon and his Pistols pals were readying themselves to lurch onto the scene. 10CC, thank goodness (and once over the pap of 'Donna' and 'Rubber Bullets', redefined 'clever music'... although the lifespan of the original band was far too short. A sensational tune, this.

  • Absolute Brilliance!

  • great stuff

  • this song is so legendary....

  • call me dumb but i cant tell whos talking??

  • Comment removed

  • @TheBeatlefloyd Eric Stewart (10cc lead singer & author of the song) is narrating the explanation in the opening part of this documentary.

  • what incredible musical ability to come up with all the different ideas in this song.

  • Dave Grohl sent me here

  • @Aclaw18 cool! What did Dave Grohl say? Is there a video of him talking about this song.

  • @HSECMAN You obviously arent Youtube savy. Saying Dave Grohl sent me here means in a video Dave Grohl mentioned this video.

  • @Aclaw18 yeah we believe you and are sooooo impressed...really....

    friggin wannabe....

  • @Aclaw18

Fascinating back info on a staggeringly beautiful song, both at 14 years old and still to this day.

  • It's from a BBC radio documentary called The Record Producers.

Fantastic illustration of production genius that was years ahead of its time.

  • GREAT!!!!!

  • Truly amazing. Where did you get this? I would love to have the original multitracks of this. Thanks for sharing!

  • GREAT

  • The perfect balance of history and the exploration of audio production trickery. Brilliant! Thank you for uploading.
