I feel this documentary explains a treasured secret that none of us should know about. I still find utilising "musique concrete" production techniques more emotive than idly pushing preset buttons on keyboards or softsynths. Though the genie secret has been explained, the band earn higher regard & the elegance of this track is not destroyed. I can never forget the combined sound that summer day in 1975 when I first heard this on the radio. I hope Kathy Warren earned a few quid off this too!
Recording all these voices across the chromatic scale, putting them on an endless loop of tape and playing the mixing board like it was an instrument has an almost Mellotron-ish quality to it!
where are these "making of" videos coming from - are there more - as an engineer producer - I'm addicted - AudioMystic - are these from a series of sorts ?
I've loved this song and 10CC's and Godley and Creme's other work too. But now seeing how it was made I'm even more amazed and impressed by it. Thank you so much for sharing this documentary!
This documentary justifies the 36 years that I've loved this classic single. It reached #2 on The Billboard Hot 100 in 1975 and spent 3 weeks in that position with the distinction of being held out of the top spot by 3 different #1 hits. Their next biggest single in America, "The Things We Do For Love," was another top five hit but a major creative letdown compared to "I'm Not In Love."
Ahh, the days when you had to improvise production of songs instead of just using a piece of software. I know you can't stand in the way of progress, but sometimes making things easier takes the creativity out of it. I could listen to stuff like this all day long.
THanks for this - it explains the process of how and why this song sounds so sublime - all to be told, "I'm not in love," but how wonderfully told - makes breaking up an eloquent work of art
Great song when I was growing up, and still one of my favorites today. Now that I know the actual work and "soundcrafting" they did, I appreciate it more.
Now I understand why, when I was just 16, that this seemed like the most innovative, electronic sound I had heard so far in spite of new wave, Brian Eno, etc. I now listen to a lot of progressive electronic music and after giving this another deep listen, it all sounds kind of flat to me in comparison. Amazing.
With the demise of the Beatles, UK pop sensibilities soon slid away from 'production' and any level of 'deep' musical creativity. Bowie was blossoming, Mott were succumbing to Top of the Pops, Bolan had lost the plot... and Johnny Lydon and his Pistols pals were readying themselves to lurch onto the scene. 10CC, thank goodness (and once over the pap of 'Donna' and 'Rubber Bullets', redefined 'clever music'... although the lifespan of the original band was far too short. A sensational tune, this.
They made all the right decisions...When i was a kid...i thought that it was the perfect record...What could be more beautiful than what they made?

French singer Eric Charden re-recorded one of his 60s hits (Le monde est gris, le monde est bleu) in 1978, trying to emulate this effect.

I love how creative and inoative this song was and still is. Especially when you realise it was all done before the invention of the digital sampler.
Much love for this song ;) x

It's from a BBC radio documentary called The Record Producers.
Fantastic illustration of production genius that was years ahead of its time.
