@Geirsodd "Ukrainian" is hardly a language, more like a dialect. Bastardized Russian with some Polish words. There is nothing written in "Ukrainian language" prior to 18c as it was a vernacular peasant dialect in Little Russia. The Ukrainian "language" and spelling were codified only in 19-20c when the concept of Ukrainian nationality was artificially developed. If you understand Russian you can understand Ukrainian, besides nearly everyone in the Ukraine speaks Russian.

I am trying to learn about the Ukraine. My grandparents came to the US from the Ukraine because Stalin killed a bunch of my relatives. I do not know much, and in the US at that time, they did not let the children speak other languages, so my grandparents did not teach my mom the language because they feared she would be subject to ridicule.

I was shocked at how my cousins in Kyiv and Zaporizhia (all ages) spoke only Russian to one another and struggled to remember to switch to Ukrainian for me. Since your primary language in speech is Russian, is it also your language of thought? Is this common for your generation and do you have any feelings of regret or unease with this erosion of national culture? anyway, from my experience, dark-skinned people tend to get fewer weird looks from the natives in kiev - progressive capital and all that, but there's always prejudice among people - the isolation of the USSR is still prominent in society. personally, i would never live anywhere but in kiev, seeing as it is the capital and more or less modern, but lviv is charming for a vacation and purely cultural experiences.

There is nothing written in "Ukrainian language" prior to 18c as it was a vernacular peasant dialect in Little Russia. The Ukrainian "language" and spelling were codified only in 19-20c when the concept of Ukrainian nationality was artificially developed. If you understand Russian you can understand Ukrainian, besides nearly everyone in the Ukraine speaks Russian.

Since your primary language in speech is Russian, is it also your language of thought? @TolKOZAK I think in Russian and English mostly, I only switch to Ukrainian when I have to retell or write something for school. I don't really know, I like speaking Russian, but Ukrainian is much more soulful, I think, and it gets annoying when foreigners go 'you speak Russian? But you're Ukrainian'. It is second nature, I honestly think it's kind of the first for some people. It's something I have been born into, I can't explain it...

@marykiev Thank you for your swift response. I hope my questions aren't offensive. I"m merely trying to understand the modern "Ukrainian" youth psyche. Especially as it relates to what we Westerners would view as the continuing Russification of Ukraine. I admit my bias because growing up in Canada of Ukrainian-born parents who despised Hitler and Stalin, my views are definitely anti-Russia. Why is much of Ukraine is so pro-Russia. Is it their overwhelming influence in popular culture and media?

@TolKOZAK Well, me personally, I have nothing against Russians. I hate those typical people in Ukraine who speak Russian, hate the Ukrainian nation and are communists.... THOSE are "moskals" to me. All European politicians are traitors to their nations... they're all corrupt. I don't understand this (pro-Russia, pro-Western bs) Ukraine needs to be independent and not rely on other countries... joining the EU would be a HUGE mistake, we shouldn't be giving up our sovereignty.

@GalicianUKR Yes, there is no corruption where you live? Poland and others still have their sovreignty and along with it they have better roads, government, less corruption, more opportunities for their populations and their children. People are returning to Poland because of the EU as well. So right now you have shitty roads, massive corruption and your young, as Marykiev states, want to get the hell out as soon as they can. And first choice Sweden, Canada and USA with all those minorities.

@jonpgh I'm not denying anything man, Ukraine has a lot of problems... look what happened to Nazi German in the early 1930's when Hitler took power. Before Hitler was in power, 6 millions Germans were unemployed. Hitler was voted into power, and it was a miracle... in two years, 6 million unemployed Germans were employed. Germany was out of the recession. The Ukrainian government is CORRUPT... they're all SCUM. They don't care about the people at all... which is no surprise at all.

anyway, from my experience, dark-skinned people tend to get fewer weird looks from the natives in kiev - progressive capital and all that, but there's always prejudice among people - the isolation of the USSR is still prominent in society. personally, i would never live anywhere but in kiev, seeing as it is the capital and more or less modern, but lviv is charming for a vacation and purely cultural experiences.

imo the rasism thing is much bloated, if you get in trouble, dont argue, run to the nearest department store and buy im alcohol or some cheap beer, you'd be best buddies; having said that learning rus/ukr will help u ALOT, like she says no one speaks english tho i suspect they understand

The so-called 'middle name' in Ukrainian and Russian names is called the patronymic. And as she mentioned this practice is usually confined to Slavic countries.

If you could cover more common phrases that would be helpful. Basically simulate a conversation you would have with a person you just met. Asking basic questions and providing basic answers. Also some basic family nouns like mother, brother, sister, etc.

I have been here in Kiev for a year. I am from Texas. Why do people mix Ukrainian and Russian together on the streets? And why is every Ukrainian woman married? Why do they all have boyfriends am I that ugly? Could you give examples of some common questions? or Phrases? Foods what are they? No really I see things all the time and have no idea what it is and get told that it is a pie, it looks like a small loaf of bread not a pie what are they and what are the common fillings?

That was very interesting. You talked about a section in Ukriane that is more 'patriotic". But really they just carry grudges from the past. We have that in America too. People in the South still talk about the Civil War that happened over 145 years ago. I can understand why you have problems when power goes off and then back on. Power surges can cause problems everywhere. Thanks

Hi, I am Russian and I speak Russian. Last week I had to translate Dutch to Russian for an Ukrainian group.
It is interesting for me whether it is difficult to learn Ukrainian and Russian paralel (паралельно) as a kid in Ukraine?!
I mean.. Russian and Ukrainian have lots of common words which have a slightly different meaning in Ukrainian than they have in Russian. So sometimes words which mean something in Ukrainian sound a little bit strange and oldish in Russian and otherwise...

@KostjaMoscow .по-русски я на самом-то деле говорю лучше, чем на украинском, меня с детства приучали к русскому и украинский я начала учить только в школе. мне не тяжело - мозг спокойно воспринимает и русский, и украинский, и английский отдельно)) хотя я знаю, что куча росиян потухают над нашими словами)) недавно выдали - оказывается, на староукраинском "учительница" будет "дрАчилка". такой истерики у меня давно не было.

i agree what Stalin did in 31-32 taking the Ukrainians wheat by force is wrong, though I'm Ukrainian myself, i don't hold a grudge though, i do live in Canada, but i do prefer Russia/Ukraine/Canada over the US :) Also I'm a Socialist.
