@GREEDY602 They already have a piston in some of their designs, but they are sticking with the DI in most of their designs because they can be made to be reliable and they can out shoot piston guns when it comes to accuracy and range.
@BAACCOOOOCk how does the gas system effect the accuracy/ range? the gas system only effects cycling of the next round has nothing to do with accuracy or range. if you were to take the gas tube out and shoot a round it would go as far and hit the same as if the gas tube was still in the rifle, only difference the next round wont load. and as far as reliable...every 500 rounds i would have to clean my DI rifle cause of carbon build up and though my sig 516 (piston) i shot 1500 rds without cleanin
It basically shows how a piston causes the barrel to flex more and it causes the accuracy to decrease, and you saying it only affects cycling is very wrong. Thats why an AK with the same barrel length as an M16 can only have an accurate hit out to 300 meters, not 550 to 600 like the M16.
I bet it will be 2400 usd for a "new" colt , I got a 640 dollar cmmg gas piston upper and a zm weapon/ para ttr back up without a stock. Less than 1800 dlls for 2 great guns that make colt outdated.
if colt would use the same features the bushmaster acr and the fn scar use (piston, REAL folding stock not half a folding stock, adjustable cheek peice, front mounted charging handle, then i would be interested.
@GREEDY602 It is really hard to put a folding stock and a cheek peice on a M-16 style weapon Because of these two reasons:
1. the charging handle- when you charge the weapon you have to pull the handle back about half way down the stock
2. Recoil system- The way the M-16 or Ar-15 was made the way the bolt carrier was made, it goes inside the stock so, if you fold the stock to the side your going to get bolt carrier in the face if you fold it.
@HyP3rxMiTchXx0 i knw u cant put a folding stock or a cheek peice on a ar plat form rifle the way it is designed right now, thats why i was sayin change the system and it would be great. they COULD make a rifle that looks EXACTLY like a ar-15 but with a shorter bolt carrier so in turn they could put a folding buttstock on it and just put the charging handle up front in the hand gaurds or even on the left side of the upper reciever then u could use a cheek peice.
@GREEDY602 I know what you mean but if they change those parts they will do what bushmaster did. Bushmaster was trying to up date the M-16 but they took everything away and left the frount post sight, trigger and firing pin assembaly then they made the Advanced Combat Rifle or ACR. I know what you want, you want them to make a upper reciver and move the bolt forward move the charging handle to the side and create a folding stock would be awesome. sorry for making you feel bad if i did
@HyP3rxMiTchXx0 hahaha no u didnt make me feel bad, no disrespect here. bushmaster created a new style gun using only a couple parts from the ar platform but what i was sayin is keep the m4 the way it is right now but change those features, the bushmaster looks nothing like a m4, but i would love to have a m4 with the features of a ACR.
@GREEDY602 I know what your saying but the last people who tryed to do what you are talking about was bushmaster, then they made the ACR. But if they did how much paper work would we have to do for modifing a rifle or justing buying a firearm now adays. only time will tell! nice chating with you
You guys know Magpul designed the ACR right? And Remington makes the military versions. The only thing Bushmaster did is sign a contract saying they would make them for the civilian market.
Unless it uses a piston system it's not a threat to any HK unless you're using the 9mm HK outdoors or at long range. I would have liked to have seen it fired in full auto mode, however.
It has a HUGE logistics advantage, and Colt Defense isn't exactly a newcomer in the world of the M4-pattern rifle. They are already tooled up to make many of the major components.
@punkygrunge I'm not surprised. Honestly, the HK416 isn't really anything special. It's basically just a piston driven AR15. This has been done before for ages.
Shortening the gastube length may make it have a faster rate of fire. The shortend barrel might affect muzzle velocity & of course the shortend sight radius may affect accuracy. Hard to say for sure because the engineers may have compensated in some way for the changes. I think this might be a piston or hybrid/piston. We shall see.
I am a little confused. This is still a DI gas system, just shortened, correct? Meaning that it will have lower velocity that a standard AR15 platform with a 10.5" barrel?
@Slayer750 thats the way it looks like it to me. They probably shortened the buffer spring and buffer altogether to allow the fold able stock. As for lower velocity, you will always get that when you shorten the barrel.
@bf1943codjoemama Thanks. In regards to the velocity comment, I was not referring so much to barrel length as much as the modified gas system. In my original comment, I should have said "than an standard AR15 platform with a barrel of the same length." My question is: Will velocity be reduced due to a shortened gas system?
@Slayer750 I could be wrong, but I don't think the length of the gas system affects velocity. The gas that travels through the gas tube only pushes the bolt carrier group and it doesn't affect the traveling bullet. It just takes some of the gas that is behind the bullet and utilizes it to chamber the next round. I do know that the size and length of the gas tube have to be a certain size to the barrel, so that the weapon can cycle reliably.
@Slayer750 I don't think the gas system has been shortened - it looks like the standard carbine-length gas system that's used on ARs with barrels anywhere from 10.3" to 16".
@PresidentSkroob12345 Jeez, I'm having trouble communicating my question, it seems! Haha. Let me try one last time: Will the shortening of the buffer tube affect exit muzzle velocity?
I have no idea why I had such trouble asking that... haha
@Slayer750 Ah, I see what you mean now. No, I don't think the shortened recoil system will affect velocity - by the time the bolt carrier starts moving to the rear, the bullet is well on its way down the barrel so it shouldn't have much effect.
Usually when people say "gas system" they mean the gas block and gas tube and maybe the bolt carrier group, so that's why bf1943codjoemama and I posted the comments that we did.
colt needs to update and go with gas piston operated system and get rid of that DI system. or did this already happen? anyone...anyone lol

..A shortened version of the M4? Carbine's don't need shortened variants. I'm not a big fan of the M4 regardless.
