  • Youre right, mac boots faster, we have THE App Store, and windows is crap, always virusses, slow boot time, ugly interface, and so on

  • windows user's are so jealous... it's make me laugh... still thinking they have a good computer... just TRY IT...

  • Mac is in one word: badddddd

  • @bastiaan170 your mother is bad too

  • @Geusswho2513 And your father

  • 4200 rpm is sissy for a laptop hdd it makes a 5400 rpm look like a tough guy

  • mac is the price of being cool

  • @NeroSNT mac is the price of being a tool

  • Get a 15000rpm hard drive. The ssd will lose badly

  • @davidfordapple

a)Good luck finding a 1.8" 15k rpm HDD to fit in a macbook air

    b) SSD's will destroy any HDD, look at any benchmarks or real work application

  • @davidfordapple actually no, HDDs will almost never reach the speed of an SSD

Even if you put those "15k rpm" drives of yours in Raid 0.

  • Playing farmville LIKE A BAWSS

  • Are there exactly the same things installed on these computers? Because that can influence the boot up speed!

  • There are many bad things about an SSD that has not been talked about

A SSD has 3 big problems; the cost is high, the storage is low, and its write speeds are really bad

A HDD takes only 2-3 seconds more for a program to run, they are very cheap and there storage is really big, but the best thing is that the read and write speeds are basically the same

in gaming, the new games that are out, require good read AND write speeds which an SSD obviously does not have so SSD is not for gaming

  • @XAnImEzLoVeRX a reply to myself

why would this video be an SSD verse a 4200rpm HDD

very stupid considering a 4200rpm is outdated and the HDD's that are out now are up to 15000rpm

so now people will be misleading about SSD, when SSD isnt really good and HDD are still the best for gaming and many programs out now

  • @XAnImEzLoVeRX what you just said is complete and utter crap Mechanical storage will always be slower you mong go back to school xoxox

  • @JamieThomasC why do you think an SSD is better than a HDD and i will tell you 10 things why HDD is considered better

  • @XAnImEzLoVeRX Hdd's do last longer, and they don't have limited write times. However, with my new SSD, Leopard boots in only 10 seconds on my G5, compared to my MBP using an HDD booting Lion in 40.

  • @CaptainDarren82 that is true, SSD's are always going to have better read speeds, but i didnt exactly talk about that didnt i

  • @XAnImEzLoVeRX Why a SSD is better?

    Faster

    Lighter

    Lower power consumption

    Shock resistant

    Silent

These are what you want on a laptop.

    Why SSDs will be better:

Will soon be a lot cheaper to manufacture than HDDs

    Will soon crush HDDs capacity-wise

  • @zenith1111 stop taking it the wrong way, laptops = SSD, but Desktop Computers = HDD

    laptops need SSD

stupid people would say HDD in laptops, i wasnt really pointing towards laptops, i was pointing more towards Desktops :)

  • @XAnImEzLoVeRX

With mass production and massive R&D things get cheap.

HDDs are evolving since the 50's, flash began mass production in the late 90's and lots of people are already migrating.

Flash still has a lot of potential to grow.

Why do you think Samsung got rid of their HDD business and is investing everything in SSD?

Not long ago we saw the first 16 MB USB flash drives being sold for 100+USD and now I'm waiting for my new 128GB SSD that cost me less than 250USD :)

  • @zenith1111 for 250USD, you can get a 10,000rpm with 600MB-2TB HDD, or two drives if you want

that not only is fast, but is very reliable, as HDD's are around, they get better, dont they, HDD's are far more cheaper and reliable these days, i gotta say SSD great for OS considering the read speeds, but for gaming, its a no no

  • Ou shit o.O

  • And one me!! Please :)

  • well, now that u prove u have 3 macs...send one to me?

  • MBA one of the slowest modern laptops. An HP netbook I found in BestBuy for $350 has better specs. And it's a PC. :p

  • @ratchetandclankf

Specs really don't mean shit when it comes to Macs. A mac with inferior specs to a PC will still be faster do to hardware-software compatibility and will probably last 3 times as long.

Macbooks are premium laptops. They're unibody, made of metal, have amazing customer support, and are incredibly reliable, sturdy, and long lasting. Not to mention they'll hold their value and you can resell them years later at 50% of the original cost(at least).

  • @JrvUnleashedMusic You made your point.

  • Fkn slow as fuck

  • I haven't seen a Mac with a mic port in years, most of them have a line-in. If you're referring to that, it could be added via USB for as little as $5, not really a fail. The MBA is web device, if you need more you get a MB(P)

  • IMHO 2010 MB Air is the only usable version of this product. The biggest fail though is it lack of mic port.

  • hahahahah!... Macs

  • why not atleast compare to a newer HD .

  • 4200 RPM is sooooo old, lol !

  • why would you compare it to TWO MBAs of the same model? After all they were both same as slow.

  • @Draftgon I guess he wanted it to be symmetrical

  • is the Macbook air with SSD quieter ? less noise less heat ?

  • Dun Dun!

  • Wow a 4200rpm hard drive? what is this 1999? lol use 7200rpm

  • @bphockey23 there was no such thing as a 7200 in 2008 that would fit an air...

  • @rsfeller Not even 5200rpm?

  • Twice as fast should cost only twice as much.

Thats clearly NOT the case yet so, we STILL love you our good ol' HDDs

  • Sdd 500 gb costs more than diamond at apple's website, but diamonds aren't as fast as sdd.

  • Dont know whats wors, the 3 uslessbooks or you usless SSD ... hmm

  • jetbook xD the lil apple is broken cause the jet fuel ;)

  • That one on the left bites ASSSS!

  • macbook air? the sound is more like "macbook JET" :P

  • @kanarie93 I don't think that is the air making that sound. My GF has one and it is silent unless you push it and then it simply make very quiet fan noise. At full fan speed it still is probably quieter than most desktop PCs at idle. And no I'm not a mac fan boy. I don't even own one personally.

  • @Plur307

next to my pc you hear 0.0 :P

cuz my PC is in other room xD

  • The hardest operation i seen mac's has done is Startup ... seriously .. why the fuck do people buy this shit ?

  • these look so thin that you can chop carrots or use it as weapon

  • the SSD has great graphics!

  • what thad sound?

  • Now you can be useless twice as fast!

  • @gullf1sk That's funny I like it MAC users can be useless twice as fast!

    LOL

  • @gullf1sk I agree

  • @gullf1sk Or you can watch porn and cat videos on youtube much faster!

  • HDD was owned!

  • Yes but the point is to have something like this be faster. So yeah you could get a Pro but then you wouldn't haves MacBook air. Also a lot of people do really like it (I don't tho) like my dad, even though he is head of a software development company. He said if they modernize the specs (faster more storage more ram) thence would buy one.

  • Don't judge 'everyone' that has a Macbook Air. We're not all stupid. I got mine 6 months old for €670. Not all of us were decadent enough to spend $1800 on a fancy netbook.

  • ale wieś jak wolno

  • my unibody macbook is like the sdd

  • lol, my windows 7 64 bit loads up in 25 seconds off of a 7200 rpm IDE drive. thats 5 seconds faster than that air with an ssd, lol apple.

  • i don'r know that before. Which two startup so slow with sata hard drive when comparing to the center one with ssd.

now i 'm happy that i've got the ssd version of MBA.

  • '

how come america is never make it this mac

  • Buying one Macbook Air: Stupid

    Buying two Macbook Airs: WTF

Buying three Macbook Airs: Jesus shit nipples!

  • SamTalmadge,

    '

    what next buying four

  • @SamTalmadge That's when we all commit suicide

  • Fuck macs

  • Air sucks!...sometimes. But the MacBook Air sucks: for a macbook.

  • @SatanicaLvx666 ...oh kay... The MacBook Air has not had a new model since about 2007, 3 years ago. Not that long except in the field of technological advancement I don't like the MacBookAir because the current one has a rediculously slow processor and only comes w/128GB

I think that Apple should, if they want to continue the product, release a new model, preferably one with more options and a way faster processor.

Finally you suck because you don't know anything about  so go fuck yourself.

  • @jamesschader Yeah nice buddy, Basically you don't know anything since it has been refreshed and you also want them to change something to no longer appeal to the market it was designed for. If people want something faster and more features wouldn't they just buy the slightly bigger macbook pro or mac book

  • you mean 5200 rpm right?

  • Wow ! What a difference !

Thank you for this video !

  • quit impressive

  • who turned on all

  • Geeze... There's a lot of people claiming mac technical issues. I've yet to encounter any beach balls of death or hardware failures on my mac. Works fast and great!!! The only time I've received a beach ball, it didn't persist for more than 5 seconds, and it was me seeing how many opening applications and videos I could have going before I had a slowdown on my base model 2009 macbook pro. Go apple 

  • @DarthTechGeek

My macbook air is 2 years old. HD just died. Need a new one. Very expensive. and since i've had it the screen has also failed. Cost my $800 to fix the screen. It was the first version that came out. But my macbook pro 15 has been flawless (for the last 4 months anyway......)

  • @jayrodatbeach

Sry, that sucks. On my older windows laptop, I had to had to have the screen replaced, get a new battery, and upgrade the ram (myself of course) within the first year and a half. These fixes and needed tweaks brought it up past the cost of my newer macbook pro, which hasn't had any issues yet. So for me, it's been a beneficial investment. Then again, I don't own a macbook air, so maybe those are more problematic. Good luck.

  • My MacBook turns 2x faster on then yours... (also hdd)

You must be doing anything wrong :p

    SO its fake...

  • How did you get so many of those? 

  • you should compare a macbook with a normal laptop hd, a 7200rpm hd and an ssd

  • I do agree.. I would love to see a 7200rpm comparison.. Altough for a laptop i would rather go for a 5400 or 4200rpm drive because of the battery drain. I currently enjoy my MacBook Air, even over my previously owned Vaio-Z (56-G). But i have to say Win7 rocks over the rather outdated OSX functionality and lack of Driver support, Games and Applications. But still the battery live on my Air and given the overal usage, i seem to boot my mac more over my PC's.

  • haha, I'd rather have an expensive mac that's always reliable than a windows machine which always breaks down and you have to always worry about viruses.....ah windows, no thanks, give me something I can count on. I and millions others had enough of windows! But windows are good for games at least when serious work doesn't count.

  • @eugenio100100 Uhh, last I checked Microsoft still had 92% market share. And that number has stayed about the same for a long time.

Also, Windows 7 is more reliable than Snow Leopard.

Furthermore, Macs can get viruses too, dignus. When you get one, there's less you can do about it on a Mac than on Windows.

  • @tot22 MS doesn't have 92% market share. Don't forget that there are some people (small percentage) of Linux users.

Windows 7 is based on Vista. It's not more reliable than Snow Leopard. I've used both and I never had to hard-reboot (reset) a Mac. Windows - yes.

There are a few macro viruses for Mac... yes. But, they were written for Office. So the only vulnerability on a Mac, is the Microsoft product.

  • @bathellfire i have to hard reboot my macbook all te time. id rather have a blue screen then a spinning beach ball of death

  • @bathellfire Im a die-hard pc lover but even I think that your last sentance was just SOOOO FUNNNY

  • @tot22 mac has no integrated virus scanner so if you get one your schrewed

  • @tot22 W7 is not more reliable than Snow. And Leopard > Snow Leo.

I have five machines at home, two macs and two W7 and one XP set ups and W7 does crash and has same stupid errors Vista had. In fact, it is barely distinguishable from Vista, if not count all the UI stuff, but concentrate on stability.

  • @eugenio100100 my windows has never broken down and i only have avg. porn and windows equals death

  • it breaks down because idiots keep downloading the first thing u see instead of actually researching it

  • I thought the same way you did, by going out and buying an exspensive mac. I had more problems with it than vista. I never looked at porn or any 3rd party sites and it never moved from my desk once.I went through 4 hard drives, two mother boards, and a CD/DVD drive. The OS would crash once a day and it was snow leapard. So i went back to windows got a gateway 10x more powerful for half the price and didnt have any of those issues.

  • @eugenio100100 You don't know nothing about windows 7. It's reliable. You have old feelings about windows. Try windows 7 before you speak.

  • Wow I thought mac was fast. Looks pretty slow to me.

  • That's because these a the macbook airs, really thin but quite slow compared to the baseline pro that is around £300 cheaper.

  • What a waste then.

  • It is *slightly* slower than Linux, and pretty much the same as a normal Windows installation. It looks like it's way slower 'cause the whole boot process has the same splash screen... but when you see the desktop, you're ready to go. UNLIKE Windows. :D

  • 4200? laptop 5400 rpm

  • They use tiny PATA iPod type HDDs in the non SSD models, not normal 2.5in. laptop HDDs.

  • A normal laptop is 5400 rpm, but these are macs we're talking about. To get decent hardware you have to pay a lot more $

  • Why two 4200rpm and not one 4200rpm and one 7200rpm? And maybe a 10000rpm?

  • man those are thin

  • why not just get a pc?

  • why not get a mac?

  • Because they cost so much more to get the same performance (or worse) performance

  • I like using the Mac laptops more. I have nothing against Windows, I have a desktop PC with 7 but I still just like the Mac more. But 7 is a lot better than Vista.

  • very useful comment (y) ... NOT

  • joking,right?

  • Nice comparison, I like the fact that you used two 4200 rpm HDs instead of just one, it makes for a good experimental control. Awesome video!!! Got to get me a SSD!!! But they're so expensive... and I'm so broke!!!

  • lol

  • Having just used my friends second gen Macbook Air for an hour, I gotta say....The 4200RPM drive makes me want to rip my hair out whenever it has to access it. My sister's 5 year old Gateway 7330GZ laptop gets the same transfer speed and slightly better access times. Yuck. And its not like you can prevent too much hard drive access by getting more RAM either, its soldered in there. Me thinks the MBA is due for a refresh soon.

  • New SSDs are faster, however there's still two important problems OS software and firmware don't address. 1: For single drive SSD-only computers many programs and OS's rewrite a LOT of content (ie internet browsing, video editing). The MLC SSD's in these consumer level computers might be stressed for those rewrites with heavy usage over time. 2: Bugs in SSD firmware regaurding WIPE potocols is still buggy. Spread the word so MSFT and Apple don't make us change computers every 2 years.

  • wats up with the right laptop? y did it get second place

  • Is SATA II (3gb/s) faster than SSD???

  • No. SSD is few times faster.

  • SSD & HDD both run on SATA2; SATA2 is a storage interface, not a physical disk. However, SSD is faster than a typical hard drive, is more durable, but has slower write speeds.

  • @lighangel Some SSD's have hit the upper limit of SATA II, and are now bottlenecked by it. So big increases in SSD speed will only come after SATA III goes mainstream. And by the looks of current SSD progress, SATA III wont be able to cut it for long either.

  • YES!A LOT FASTER!

  • Does anyone know if Snow Leopard supports trim?

  • macbook air's dont function with 2.5" HDD drake, they have 1.8" drives, which is y they only have 4200rpm. 2.5"HDD u can get with 7200rpm!!!

  • SSD doesn't move so it doesn't generate any heat right?

  • of course it generates heat, everything that uses electricity generate heat.

  • a processor does not move and it does generate lots of heat

  • @hyrael2 what are you talking about... cpu can reach temps in the 100C...

  • @Peace7Maker Yes it can, if you don't want it anymore...

  • @hyrael2 4200RPM is pretty slow.

  • @jamesschader Hehe, i know, 7200 is slow too, compare to SSD's

  • @hyrael2 it depends, only if your trying to save something, then it's slow. But if your just trying to open something then SSD is faster than 7200 RPM

  • @hyrael2 u mean he can't walk away ?

  • Very little. Anything that uses Electricity produces some heat energy as a by product.

  • well it does generate heat but very less in comparision to the HDD.

its just like saying, hey look my dog hasn't moved in 2 days, so he won't have to eat right? cuz he doesn't burn any fat

  • It just won't break down as fast as an HDD, because the HDD has moving parts in it.

  • 25 second faster boot up (£8 a second), faster than an HDD, and better reliability - not bad.

  • why do MB Airs run at 4200 RPM.....

My 6 year old toshiba's laptop runs at 5400... and most modern ones at 7200+....

  • Because it is very thin. It has a thikness of 4 mm in the front and 19 mm in the thikest point.

The hdd in the air is an ipod hdd.

  • didn't know it was a ipod hard drive, wow

  • because it has 1.8" hdd, which is designed for (and used on) mp3 players like ipod or zune.

  • because the mac book is 1.54 inches thick. Id like to see you fit anything bigger than a 5400

  • have you noticed how thin they are? and how thick and heavy your 6 year old laptop is

  • lol my 6 year old desktop might as well be a PC with a monitor attached to it, that is true.

but my home built netbook has a 7200 RPM.

  • because hard drives that thin haven't evolved into faster speeds yet.

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • These use 2.5" form factor hard drives. They have them in 5400 RPM.

  • They use 1.8" drives.

  • I just changed out my HDD in my MacBook. Its like a new computer! Faster startups, faster response time. Battery life is a tiny bit better. Very good upgrade option to squeeze a few more years life out of an older PC.

  • how do you change the hdd u need 2 buy 1 rite?

  • LOL

  • Takes about as long as my rig to boot, and I have a SATA at 1200 rpm, 1tb, Western Digital if you're curious.

I fail to see the point in boot time anyhow, and yes, I know that SSD's are faster and more durable than HDD's in general, but if I want fast boot times I can just put my OS on a 32GB HDD and it will be even faster than it is now.

TL:DR - Boot times are not a good show of the performance and durability of SDD's.

  • i choose SSD

  • do they ever heard about 7200rpm 2,5" HDDs?

  • the air used 1.8" hard drives (iPod hard drives)

  • Dude, it's a notebook. The less battery usage you have, the best is for you.

SSD do are better for notebooks and portable devices, because you have an outstanding performance when it comes from battery usage.

It might be more expensive than HDD, but they are still working on it. Soon it will be cheaper and all the notebooks will have SSD instead of HDD.

The hardware that most uses the battery is the Hard Drive. But.. what if you use a SSD? You can use your notebook for a longer time on batt.

  • Agreed - plus, its lighter, produce no heat (otherwise they would attach a fan on the ssd lol), and if you ever get caught in a situation of copying something very important (within the same ssd) while running down a burning apartment, you'll be sure to not lose anything important ;)

  • I know, and that's why I said they are still working on the SSD technology, so that it will work better than the so called HDD.

  • SSD is the future, just like the switch from floppys to CDs to flash drives.

  • You got that right

  • You' should not be buying this Mac for gaming whatsoever

  • Just think!!! For an extra $700 you can save 35 seconds of your life! Wow, what a deal!

  • And get much better gaming performance.... which is important for some.

  • For PC users it is good for gaming. For video and sound editors Macs are amazing with the SSD. For 3D work Mac and PC doesn't matter (Mac is slightly worse due to the inability to render as fast), but SSD is amazing overall.

The only complaint I have heard is from people saying that SSDs can not multi-task worth a crap. I was wondering if anyone else wanted to confirm that.

  • Memory drives don't multitask. Processors do.

  • gaming on an AIR? no way jose!

  • Fair point! Still, SSD in a real pc (that is, a man's computer) would be delish for gaming.

  • Enjoy your plastic Windows governed PC, ill stick with a quality Mac.

  • Yep. And I will also enjoy the £1500 I saved. Oh, and the games. And the repair costs.

  • My PC is actually all Aluminum. Seeing as I made it myself, there are no locks on it. I'm free to install Mac OSX any time I want. The beauty of it is that it costs about a third the price of a mac. Quality my ass.
