@kodiak423 No, the song IS relatively heavier than most of the others, and is heavier than what you'd typically imagine a girl singing. That was my point there. The guy...eh. He has his moments, but usually...eh
Would've never believed The Decemberists were capable rocking THIS hard way back when I started listening to Castaways & Cutouts...This is like a different band! But it's sick, fantastic album!
In addition, I love this song because it's a point of clarity in the story. The background it gives is one of the most important parts, I believe. It's definitely my favorite on the album.
Usually, I don't really like female singers in heavy songs such as this. That's because most of them are annoying. This, however, is epic. Personally, I think she is the best singer in this album.
She reminds me a bit of Fiona Apple here at some parts. This is kind of a odd sound for the Decemberists... wasn't really expecting the sound, but I still like it.
The voice is powerful and dramatic but the guitar it's not. Not as much as it could. La voce è possente e drammatica ma questo non vale per la chitarra.
At first I pissed that they got a new vocalist, but She has such a hounting seductive voice. It's perfect for the tone of this song. this is the best part, it's grimey. I love grimey music, if you know what I mean. Dirty, twisted, passionate=grimey.
But it's the perfect term for it! Looks like we're going to need to start schooling some people :) But really, Grimey music is the best, it just brings out raw emotion.

and here i thought that the crane wife was a disappointment...
where is the old quirk that they always had before? i mean, i'm not saying this album isn't good, but it's nowhere near up to par with their older works.
I think it's far quirkier than any individual song from their earlier repertoire, but the fact that it's spread out over an entire album deadens the effect. I love it, personally - it's their most ambitious work by far, and, for the most part, it succeeds at its ambitions - but yes, it certainly lacks a lot of the whimsical light-heartedness in their earlier works, and being a single, contiguous work it definitely isn't the same experience as listening to their older, far more eclectic stuff.
Do you mean the way the chop the song in pits and put a little here a little there? I hate that!, I want to listen to the whole thing at once, I just mixed it together in Wavepad.
I love you Colin, Jenny, John,Chris and whatever the new girls name is. (what is it?) nut stop chopping your songs. It was fine with the crane wife with the 3 parts cuz they each sounded like their own distinct song, but this is madness.
Usually, any band that will do that on an album have an overarching story (such as the story present on this album), and the reprises will either add a new piece to the story or reflect on how the in-between bits have changed the story for the character singing (or the character the song refers to).
There are certainly plenty of reasons to dislike 'the Hazards of Love', and this is a pretty reasonable one - just as long as you're not trying to claim that it's more commercial than their early repertoire. "Five Songs" notably has at least THREE valid singles out of six songs - "the Hazards of Love" has one out of seventeen.
Plenty of reasons to dislike "the Hazards of Love", but certainly not because it's a 'sell-out' album, or overly commercial!
her work, and the fact that he used two different vocalists for Margaret and the queen, on this album actually makes me a little disappointed that Colin decided to voice both the Rake and the male lead. I still love his vocals, but . . . man, the difference it makes!
i love the use of the 2 different female singers because their characters are so different. Colin is the voice of the Rake and the other guys name is William. when you listen you can defiantly hear a difference in his voice for each character. LOVE THEM!!!!
Definitely my favourite track from The Hazards of Love; Shara Worden's voice here is so phenomenally powerful, and I love hearing the rock elements used as a dramatic device.
"But the river is deep to the banks and the water is wild
I will fly you to the far side."
I literally went "Oh no she didn't."
