  • "But the river is deep to the banks and the water is wild

I will fly you to the far side."

I literally went "Oh no she didn't."

  • What a great departure from thier other music. Perhaps not a departure just a detour

  • This is my favorite song of all time. Wish I could jam like this all by myself whenever I'm feeling down. Alas...Decemberists must do it for me. :)

  • first 2:40 of the song= great. second part, not so great, for me.

  • Shara Worden is amazing. Colin Meloy is amazing. THE DECEMBERISTS IN GENERAL are amazing. End of story.

  • This song just makes me want to vigorously rape furniture with my face everytime I hear it.

  • @thundara32

This song just makes me want to vigorously rape your face with my furniture every time I hear it

  • @DominoGray Say the time and place, we'll do it.

  • She sounds like the ultimate voice of authority, like to walk through her forest, you'd better be ready to pay for it.

  • Gotta love the people asking why 'they let the guy sing' colin meloy is living divine and can not be questioned.

  • I love seeing her live. when she sang this at acl she was infinitely better than in the album.

  • I WILL FLY YOU TO THE FAR SIDE.

  • @kodiak423 Probably because it's his band.

  • @kodiak423 No, the song IS relatively heavier than most of the others, and is heavier than what you'd typically imagine a girl singing. That was my point there. The guy...eh. He has his moments, but usually...eh

  • The queen is so awesome.

  • Her voice is so deep and earthy and delicious. Darkly poetic. I love it.

  • Note to almost all other bands: THESE are lyrics.

  • Would've never believed The Decemberists were capable rocking THIS hard way back when I started listening to Castaways & Cutouts...This is like a different band! But it's sick, fantastic album!

  • In addition, I love this song because it's a point of clarity in the story. The background it gives is one of the most important parts, I believe. It's definitely my favorite on the album.

  • Usually, I don't really like female singers in heavy songs such as this. That's because most of them are annoying. This, however, is epic. Personally, I think she is the best singer in this album.

  • "and yoouuuuuuuuu"

that line just gives me chills. I can just imagine her turning all creepily and pointing at the rake.

  • Man, that woman has got balls of steel.

I do think that a low powerful voice like this beats all the squeaky girls out there.

  • @Advancedgod BALLS BALLS BALLS BALLS BALLS BALLS BALLS BALLS BALLS BALLS OF STEEL

  • @donie731 hahahahaha EXACTLY. KICK ASS AND CHEW BUBBLEGUM

  • @Advancedgod And I'm all outa gum.

  • She reminds me a bit of Fiona Apple here at some parts. This is kind of a odd sound for the Decemberists... wasn't really expecting the sound, but I still like it.

  • it needs a way better guitar solo

  • @clifton062 That's not what it's about. The guitar is just an undertone. If you are looking for a guitar solo, then go listen to something else.

  • i love this story. it took me a while to get, but its fucking gold!

  • The voice is powerful and dramatic but the guitar it's not. Not as much as it could. La voce è possente e drammatica ma questo non vale per la chitarra.

  • a.maz.ing.

  • The lengths an overprotective mother would go to...

    The queen is fucking intense.

  • after reading the lyrics finally I understand the story LOL xD the mother helps the rake to take margaret away from william! how mean

  • Goddamn this band rocks. Unbelievable.

  • Awesome way to end an awesome song.

  • I am SO happy Sara joined them here.

    Her voice is a dynamo.

I love the decemberists' earlier stuff but having a powerhouse female voice on the record is a really amazing new feeling.

  • who is singing this one? it doesn't sound like colin

  • of course it isn't colin, it's some girl from another band

  • *Shara Worden

  • the "it doesn't sound like colin" was a sarcastic statement, but thanks

  • lol text is useless to try and convey sarcasm, doesn't it suck?

  • @TheBuickSixes Ha, I was giggling when you said that. And I don't mean that in a sarcastic way.

  • i completed the mission!

  • 2:52 on sounds a hint like "Stormy High" by Black Mountain

  • At first I pissed that they got a new vocalist, but She has such a hounting seductive voice. It's perfect for the tone of this song. this is the best part, it's grimey. I love grimey music, if you know what I mean. Dirty, twisted, passionate=grimey.

  • thats a perfect definition of grimey music! people always give me a weird look when i say i like grimey music!

  • But it's the perfect term for it! Looks like we're going to need to start schooling some people :) But really, Grimey music is the best, it just brings out raw emotion.

  • OMG. Love heavy stuff (Chevelle/Tool/Metallica), I love the Decemberists as well. This is refreshing.

Remember, parts of "The Island" were heavy as well.

  • O_O

This is really different from most of their stuff

    (But it's still good)

  • What's that wild chord on the organ at 3:29? It sounds to me like a nasty whole-tone cluster or an augmented chord.

  • augmented I'll bet

  • sounds like an augmented chord to me, too.

  • Is this the "Dark Side of the Moon" for this century? I have to expect to hear this album in late night parties on campuses for years.

  • I love this song. It reminds me of Black Sabbath.

  • The alliteration in the lyrics is just awesome.

  • This is an astonishing album

  • Eff'in-a. This song sends chills...

  • you. wrong.

  • Yeah like what the fuck a band isn't aloud to grow and try new things!

  • i prefer the old stuff but i think they should be able to change there style and try new things. i wouldnt want to get bored with them

  • I think it's far quirkier than any individual song from their earlier repertoire, but the fact that it's spread out over an entire album deadens the effect. I love it, personally - it's their most ambitious work by far, and, for the most part, it succeeds at its ambitions - but yes, it certainly lacks a lot of the whimsical light-heartedness in their earlier works, and being a single, contiguous work it definitely isn't the same experience as listening to their older, far more eclectic stuff.

  • Do you mean the way the chop the song in pits and put a little here a little there? I hate that!, I want to listen to the whole thing at once, I just mixed it together in Wavepad.

I love you Colin, Jenny, John,Chris and whatever the new girls name is. (what is it?) nut stop chopping your songs. It was fine with the crane wife with the 3 parts cuz they each sounded like their own distinct song, but this is madness.

  • On the CD its all flows together into one song, kinda like what they did with The Tain.

  • It works even better live; they play the entire album as one long story.

  • oh yes most certainly, i witnessed it during sasquatch last summer

  • god that must be exhausting!

  • madness?!

  • Usually, any band that will do that on an album have an overarching story (such as the story present on this album), and the reprises will either add a new piece to the story or reflect on how the in-between bits have changed the story for the character singing (or the character the song refers to).

  • @Vabulous1 Madness? . . .THIS IS ANNANNNNNNN!

  • @raspberryxsmiles Your only allowed to make that joke if Ann is a spartan...

  • @DMCVirgil Shara's voice is a metaphorical spartan!

  • There are certainly plenty of reasons to dislike 'the Hazards of Love', and this is a pretty reasonable one - just as long as you're not trying to claim that it's more commercial than their early repertoire. "Five Songs" notably has at least THREE valid singles out of six songs - "the Hazards of Love" has one out of seventeen.

Plenty of reasons to dislike "the Hazards of Love", but certainly not because it's a 'sell-out' album, or overly commercial!

  • I'm a fangirl, I love it all.

  • Shara makes the album so much. I love the decemberists, but it wouldn't be anywhere near as amazing without her.

  • her work, and the fact that he used two different vocalists for Margaret and the queen, on this album actually makes me a little disappointed that Colin decided to voice both the Rake and the male lead. I still love his vocals, but . . . man, the difference it makes!

  • i love the use of the 2 different female singers because their characters are so different. Colin is the voice of the Rake and the other guys name is William. when you listen you can defiantly hear a difference in his voice for each character. LOVE THEM!!!!

  • Becky steals your heart, Shara takes your soul.

  • exactly what i thought when i watched them sing on monday night in columbus.

every bit of their movements and their, their eyes!

it all is exactly as you say.

  • @jheftorium ...... HOW DID YOU DO THAT?!?!?! YOU PUT IT INTO WORDS *PERFECTLY*

  • So I've been sitting here listening to this album for the first time.

For this track, I had to Stop Autoplaying and listen twice.

    Awesome.

  • cheesedogs unite! nothing has ever been so amayzing az this band.

  • Definitely my favourite track from The Hazards of Love; Shara Worden's voice here is so phenomenally powerful, and I love hearing the rock elements used as a dramatic device.

  • @hairymcnipples Your name is hairymcnipples.

  • The "queen" has the best songs on the album.

  • Her tunes are more hardcore, because she's a ruthless bitch of a dictator. :)

  • 3:21 = best organ solo eeeeeeeeeeeevvvvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrr

  • i want this lady's voice please.

if the decemberists keep doing this, i'm good.

  • Oh...My....God.. This is a Decemberist group I've never seen before!

    I like it.

  • Oh, maybe THIS one is my favorite...

  • Holy crap. The Decemberists are MAJOR badasses.

  • i like the sweet instrumental break

  • Favorite off this album. The Organ kicks ass, wish the sound quality on here were a bit better, to entice the folks who haven't bought it yet.

  • this is an awesome cd! i haven't bought it yet but i'm totally going to, and this song rocks!

  • If you rip it be sure to use FLAC- mp3 just doesn't cut it for this album. Every nuance has to be captured.

  • my favorite off of Hazards of Love 2nd favorite in general!

  • one of the greatest cds I have ever listened to :______)
