Wordpress is extremely flexible once you really know your way around it. You can clean up the admin interface and simplify it for a client. I don't know why you would EVER pay for a CMS. Again I have to say no disrespect I appreciate you sharing your thoughts, but I completely disagree as to wordpress being too clunky. Out of the box maybe, but it's easily optimized for non web savvy people to do simple updates. Any1 who is that concerned about simplicity should just build their own.
My rule of thumb for CMS: "It has to work for the customer". If they can't figure it out, they won't use it. You end up looking bad because they think you didn't do your work properly. Joomla and Drupal are far too complex for the average business owner, and I don't feel wordpress has the flexability to meet my clients needs. Wordpress has come a long way, but still. I will check out perch, but I think something needs to be built from scratch with a focus on usability. Just my thoughts.
Hi Mike, thank you for this video and your many others, I apreciate your words of wisdom. Now that you discarded Wordpress as CMS, what would you recommend doing if we set up one of these light CMS that you talked about but the client wants a blog as well, can we set up a blog for them with Perch or radium3 or we would still have to use Wordpress. I hope I explained myself.
Again, I love your videos, I really like your work as web designer. Keep it up.

You have a good point about updating client's website for them but the problem arises when you have so many clients you have to deal with needing updating, a lot of people don't need CMS but there are ones that do, never heard of Perch till now...I was thinking of taking the Expression Engine route but that's $300, of course this is at the high end of CMS...it can be charged to the project's cost too...I'll see, working on my own site now, and I need a CMS to see how things work
Hey Mike. Great video! Always very helpful. Have you heard about Adobe's new forthcoming web design program called Muse? It's supposedly modeled after InDesign in terms of functionality, and requires absolutely no coding whatsoever. Pages are designed and linked intuitively. When done, you're able to export HTML ready sites. It looks to completely revolutionize web design. Check it out! I'll email you the link here on YT since you can't post here in comments section.
Perch is an absolutely fantastic CMS. I recently created a website for a client and they were looking for a CMS to update the content. From your previous video I recommended Perch and I was able to implement it with ease and update every area of content they wanted.
Everything OK about you talk here. First i have not see which is BEST CMS system in this video, and how you are taking about BEST where you have never work with joomla and drupal, you are not recomending WordPress but here u are taking about some CMS system that you need to pay to use them, so obvius, here you are making ad for this radium and i the other one???
First like always everyone want something good and free. For that here is WP, Joomla, Drupal or i'll make custom mine. Bug Dislike!
@GeniXmeN You get what you pay for. Wordpress and so on are a pain to use for the non technically inclined, and even for those who are they can be annoying at times. The point of this video was to tell you that it's much less hassle not using one for smaller sites because you'll get clients asking for support on how to use the damn thing more than if you say "we'll update it for free for x period of time".
the downfall of using WP is that your website will get slower to respond because wordpress works like a php framework calling functions and connecting to a mysql database etc... so my conclusion is that:
1.if the client wants to edit or blog, WP is the best choice!
2.if the client doesn't blog or edit anything, don't use WP!
if you want to learn wordpress check out my channel!
the best and full potential of WP is creating blog type of website, a good example is the famous net.tutsplus.com, where you have a lot of posts with user comments, thats where WP will serve you like a king!
but nowadays you can create any type of site with the help of WP pluggins, the community of developers is huge! even if you want something really simple like a static website you can create your own simple template... and a lot of clients ask for WP website because they know how to use WP.
Seems a little spammy, mike... I do use WP even for smallest sites. If a client asks me later for a newsletter, hey, no problems, just a few clicks. In addition, it has LOTS of plugins, and with a little Adminimize, even the stupid will be able to not get lost.
Don't want to get loss managing Themes? create your own or use a barebone solution (i always use Html5 Toolbox)
The good thing about Joomla/Drupal/Wordpress is that with such a huge user base, there's always someone who has already made that module you need, or come across the same problem you're having.
Thanks for the advice, but, do this other 2 CMS work fine with comics?
Wordpress already offers Comicpress and works fine, but if Radium3 or Perch can handle comics I would be glad to switch to them.

I think with Joomla/Drupal youre really unlimited as webdesigner. There are I think 2 type of designers using Joomla/Wordpress/Drupal
1. The template tweakers (using existing templates en tweak them to their own
2. The Template designers
