They maybe should clarify that a stranger you meet in a bar one night will more than likely not invite you to sauna afterwards. At least it hasn't happened to me. Most invites to sauna for me are from people I've known for a bit of time.
@workatthefarm I agree, our capital is boring and ugly. Rest of the finnish cities are not much better either, but Helsinki is total piece of shit. When I visit Helsinki for connection flights to get away from this boring country I try to stay outside hotel / airport as small amount of time as possible. Everything sucks in Helsinki. It looks ugly and its people are depressed.
I'm from England, and only 14, but I love Finland so so much. I went there this April, only for 10 days, but already I've fallen in love with Finnish culture, food and people. They're just so friendly compared to English people, it's breathtaking! I'm learning Finnish currently and hope to move either to Helsinki or Oulu when my age and finances permit me. One thing I do remember about Finland is that it's expensive compared to England, but given the quality of what's available it's worth it. :D
@TheAngel0fMeth I have exactly the same feelings towards Sweden. I'm now 21 and from England and my obsession with everything Swedish started when I was 10. I was in Stockholm in March this year and absolutely loved the place as I too eventually want to move over there for a certain length of time. I'm going again in November, literally counting down the days. Best of luck with your plans anyway.
@JackoKeano Best of luck to you too! It's rare to find someone British who enjoys Scandic culture so much. I'm counting the days until I can go back, this time to Oulu, I heard the further up north you go the more traditional the culture is, and while I really enjoyed my stay last time, because I went only to Helsinki, Tampere, Turku and Espoo and then to Estonia, I didn't really absorb as much Finnish culture as I would've liked, didn't even have a sauna :(
@TheAngel0fMeth Ah no! Not even a sauna! Maybe next time you go. I would love to see Estonia and the rest of the Baltic States, fascinating places. Did you like Estonia?
@JackoKeano Hopefully so, I'm trying to persuade my parents to take me next February, fingers crossed. Yes, I loved Estonia! I only went for a day by ferry from Helsinki, and it was only to the capital city of Tallinn, but it was very good - extremely medeival. There's a charming little restaraunt by the city hall which served elk soup with roast potatoes, bread and a drink for only one euro - it was pretty good too. There is a massive cathedral you can go to which has an enormous flight of
@JackoKeano stairs you can climb to get a viewpoint over the city. It's quite scary as it takes about half an hour to climb up the whole thing without stopping, and there are no "steps" so to speak, just stone slabs - also there is only a rope to hold on to, so you may feel a bit unnerved climbing up it, particularly towards the end, but it's perfectly safe. I get the feeling the people of Estonia are quite poor, and resent the Finnish somewhat (probably because Finland is such a prosperous
@JackoKeano nation - I wore a "Finland" T-shirt I bought at a souvenir shop underneath my jacket, and as soon as I took my jacket off everybody glared at me). But apart from that, the people were very nice, as is the food, music and culture - although I do still prefer Finland.
@TheAngel0fMeth 1 Euro! What a bargain! Will definitely be going there for something to eat! I always thought the medieval part of Tallinn looked pretty; I was talking to a friend a while ago when he got back from a weekend in Tallinn and he said that the medieval part was the only good thing to see in the city, but judging from what you wrote, it sounds like there's a whole lot more to see and do there. Thanks for tips, will def be using them!
@JackoKeano Well actually most of that was in the medeival part, the rest of Estonia is quite poor, and is worth seeing but you could probably see everything of interest in about an hour or so. The streets in the medeival quarter look vaguely like the streets on the Assassin's Creed games actually, it's quite cool to walk down them. Also Estonia has really weird weather. The day I went it was 24 degrees, but according to a local merchant it had snowed three days earlier. Creepy stuff. o_O
@TheAngel0fMeth Really, can you say something, I bet it isnt too easy to learn finnish if you werent born here. I can say that the best time to visit here is in June or January/February, I like winter more, but the summers are amazing, If you are coming in summer, you should rent a cottege for few weeks(depends how long you are staying) from some lake. In Winter you should just stay in the big cities, Tampere, Helsinki or Turku, but in summer, you must try the sauna thing.
@MultiJerkku Sadly I can only say basic phrases - minä en puhu paljoakaan suomea. I do want to learn as much as I can, I find the language fascinating. Next year I'm going back, and I will take your advice, thankyou :) the northern lights are something that have always intrigued me, but so has the Midnight Sun and the whole Sauna experience, plus the weather is a bit more bearable (although I do like cold weather). Thankyou for replying, you see this is what I mean about people being friendly!
whoooooou, i'm a finn and we sertantly not do those things, and what comes with the wooden phone.. it's just some thing old ppl in finland do. and a weird thing why didn't they tell that santaclaus lives in finland? <- like the most important thing!
Well.... I'm born and raised in Helsinki, that the Finnish culture would revolve around coffee, beer and sauna is new to me. Beer yes... sauna? Dude what lmfao.
@Verenneito Shyness is apparently a Nordic trait. We Danes are accused of exactly the same.People from other countires thinkwe are introvert. I guess though, it's quite individual. There may be a general tendency to shyness, but I bet you can find Finnish people who are the opposite as well as I know Danes who are not shy at all. You can't generalize an entire population:)
i'm finnish, and i think that it's so lame to say that finns are shy and awkward. if people advertise them selves as shy and awkward, how do you think that other will think about them? that they are shy and awkward -.- if someone comes to ask something from me, i will answer rather than be awkward and shy -.-
I think it's not impolite to say no if someone asks u to have coffee or sauna. I think thats more like central europe thingy, that if someone offers u something u must take it gratefully. In finland u can say honestly that you dont want to.
That whole hot sauna/cold swim cycle is something I never understood until I actually visited Finland and tried it for myself. I'd recommend it to anybody.

Never go by a travel company's description of a people, you have to actually GO to the country and experience the culture for itself.
That being said, Finns are great, Helsinki is great, and I am proud to have Finnish heritage :)
