  • @BloodyRedFantasy West Side Story was inspired by Romeo & Juliet

  • If you think about it this movie is EXACTLY like romeo and juliet , just a little diffrent.

    1.Two groups hate eachother

2.A young man and woman fall in love even thought their not suppose to

3.The main guys best friend dies after trieing to take up for him (mercutio and riff) and then the main guy (romeo and tony) kills the guy who killed his best friend (riff and tybalt).

    4. The main guy dies after thinking the girl is dead

  • @BloodyRedFantasy You're absolutely right, and I entirely agree with you, but on #3, don't you mean "the guy who killed his best friend (bernardo and tybalt)"?

  • @mcmptn Yeah i meant that. Thanx

  • @BloodyRedFantasy No problem

  • Experience Star Wars eps 1 in glorious 3 ---- [click].

  • Tony and Maria was merely an excuse to fight. They were going to find a reason to kill each other anyway.

  • Does anybody else find it weird how they only knew each other for two days but she still wanted to be with him after he killed her own brother? I'm all for true love and stuff but...this is a little off rofl

  • @bec4hockey Yes. Lol. I would have kicked him in the head, balls, and stomach, got a bat, and called the police.

  • One... more... time

  • 240p we meet again

  • It's sad I'm 12 and A boy but I love this

  • @flyingdragon12 How is that sad? I think that it's great that you've got such a good taste in musicals ;) Don't ever stop loving what you really love just 'cause someone says it isn't "cool" ;)

  • I get chills too. Here are Riff and Bernardo, just a few minutes from death, while Maria and Tony are oblivious to anything or anyone else. Who wouldn't have been seduced by Natalie Wood or Rita Moreno in this sequence?

  • My gaydar tells me that "the gang members" in the film were all gay.

  • @091053JG somehow I don't think so, because being a male dancer wasn't viewed as a sign of someones sexual orientation until recently. Also men who were the "gang members" were of a different society where manliness was valued and applauded, they didn't suffer from the identity crises that today's generations of youth so commonly have. Don't be so quick to assume... even if your "gaydar" or as the rest of the world calls it "homophobia" is certain of someones sexual preference.

  • This is my favorite musical of all time the lyrics just make up better!!!!!

  • i LOVE this version of tonight! this, the maria and tony noe, and america are my favorite songs! im team sharks cause theyre only violent when they need to be (it seems) i saw this movie yesterday and i fell in LOVE with it again!! it can be loved by all ages too which is awesome! my 80 yr old gramma loves it, im 13 and i love it, and my 10 yr old brother lovwes it too!!!

  • I love how the guys say tonight in the beginning <3 this song always gives me chills :)

  • This movie pissed me off somewhat.

I mean , it took 3 damn people to die for them to get along ? Its just sad. But i love this movie.

  • there are clearly some jets who thought they were going to have their "way" before they had their "day"

  • Where is Chita Rivera coming from? Anita is played by Rita Moreno

  • this bit is so so sad AREJAROGIJAG

  • wait people are saying they didn't sing this or any dogs so that include Chita Rivera( Anita) and Natalie wood( maria)

  • peaoplw are saying they dent sung this so does that mean that Natalie wood and Chita Rivera didn't sing either!? plz awnser back

  • 2:08 - 2:16 Dat bridge.

  • This is one of the best show tunes ever. I like watching this, because when you're acting in a show you can't really get the full effect.

  • I think the thing that makes it the most chilling, for me, is the fact that you can predict that someone will die and the song starts out in a minor key kind-of-feel and the final chord is a major. I have no idea, but that's really haunting to me, nonetheless, a magnificent piece by a magnificent person!

  • i love all the boys. IM PUERTO RICAN!! GO SHARKS!!!!!!

  • once again, hot damn, tony's voice :3

  • hot damn... bernardo :3

  • They changed Anita's lyrics. It was originally "He'll walk in hot and tired, so what. Don't matter if he's tired, as long as he's hot."

I like it better the original way!!

  • The beginning sounds like a song I know....but I can't figure it out

    :/

  • The Sharks, George Chakiris is too fine! <3

  • 0:10

  • What I don't understand is when do any of these people sleep?!

Obviously it's going to be an endless day & night if your not sleeping, Maria!!

  • So basically, Maria and Tony met, fell in love, pissed off their friends and caused a fight where Riff and Bernardo died. Then everybody got even more pissed off and Tony got shot. All over the course of a damn weekend?

  • @ohn0shedidnt more like a day.

  • @ohn0shedidnt just like Romeo and Juliet.

  • @ohn0shedidnt Hey, shit happens.

  • This how the movie ends.

  • @ohn0shedidnt well it is based off of Romeo and Juliet, in which the circumstances were even more greatly unrealistic and exaggerated.

Romeo and Juliet met, fell in love, their families had a long lasting hatred of one another for which no one knew the reason of, the kids got married secretly, consummated it, Juliet faked her death, Romeo killed himself, and seconds later Juliet woke up before killing herself.

    Yeah.

  • Well, yeah, obviously they're lip-synching, but that doesn't mean it's not them singing. They probably recorded it in a studio and lip-synched it. TONS of musicals do this. So. What?

  • @SazVlogs No it isn't them, I studied the movie in music, and we saw in the bonus, there are professional singers who sung the songs. But it's great anyway!

  • @SazVlogs I knew this. Most people just think they're singing while acting. It's done separately.

  • None of these dancersa are singing. The entire score was done in with full orchestra and profesional opera singers. then the actors and singer lipped it ALL the cast.

  • this reminds me Pocahontas

  • @0005axel HAHAHA I know right? Savages! Savages! lol

  • @0005axel YES! hahah me and my sister were just talking about this.

NOW WE SOUND THE DRUMS OF WAR!

  • @0005axel Romeo and Juliet

  • @0005axel It should remind you of Romeo and Juliet. That's what it is based on.

  • Rita Moreno is great in this and in the king and i aswell

  • Just seen it for the first time. so cool

  • anita is so great! i'm so glad she won an oscar for best supporting actress! she deserved it!

  • The sharks are betters singers than the jets.

  • @futurestarish

It's a modern (at the time it was written) version of Romeo and Juliet... It kind of has to have the romance in it. I see your point, but it bothers me that you're ignoring that fact.

  • that was during James T Kirk's time on the bench as a starfleet officer :P

  • This musical is great but it has a problem alot of romantic movies have. Everything is more interesting than the romance, the rivalry between the 2 groups, the jets antics, the bumbling cops, and Anita are all far more entertaining than the 2 dimensional leads.

  • @Bwkjam Oh, yeah, when we watched it in drama, the class was in unanimous agreement: the movie would've been better if they focused solely on the gangs, and, if there HAD to be romance, focus on Anita and Bernardo.

  • i can see where the the La Resistance song from south park got inspiration from

  • "the jets are gonna have their DAY toNIGHT?"

  • haha, I like how it's all about the rumble then all of a sudden you see Anita, and she's basically like "I'm getting laid!" hahaha

  • rita moreno looks very seductive in this scene!i guess the vocals her character sings are quite racy for their time too!

  • @Amandamoo73 -- Definitely! Actually, the original lyrics to her part end with "I don't care if he's tired, as long as he's *hot.*" For the movie, they felt the need to change it to "As long as he's *here.*"

  • I saw this in Manhattan LONG ago. on the largest cinema screen then in existence. this ending ensemble took my breath away. literally. I also fell in love with both RIta Moreno and Natalie Woods. what a flic. what times those were back then.

  • "punk'll" and "uncle" is a pretty awesome rhyme IMO

  • @NixonIn2008 -- the beauty that is Sondheim. Even as a fledgeling lyricist, he pulled off some really impressive rhymes!

  • @threescoreandten : As I commented in the "America" video, "Manhattan" and "put THAT in" is probably my all time favorite :)

  • hah! tony kinda waddles like a penguin while he's singing!! aww

  • @witness124 its exactly like romeo and juliet basicly thay based it on romeo and juliet and added music to it

  • Bernardo looks like Lucky Luciano from Boardwalk Empire

  • the best part of the movie!!!

  • Jets FTW

  • I like the "well they began it" part-they jerk their heads to the opposite sides, as if the other side is standing right next to them. It's a nice touch. :)

  • she deserves the life time achievement award for best lip syncher...i was completely shocked when i found out she really didnt sing the songs

  • We did West Side Story for our school musical and i swear, we practised this song night and day and now we can do it in our sleeps...

  • ... and mine too. Not one bad song, not one bad actor, ALL fabulous.

  • still my all time fav musical movie:)

  • Did anyone ever notice at the end, how Maria's (natalie) chain pops in and out of her blouse??

Lol, it took me a few watches to see that mmistake.

  • I just thought about it, Anita was so ready to get laid and then he died. That really sucks. :(

  • hahaha, I'm glad this is the top rated comment. So simple and yet sooooooooooooooooo true.

  • @lamame LOL XD

  • @lilmissmusic2012 That's funny. Are you sad Anita went unfulfilled or did you want a sex scene?

  • @MrTonykulas LOL, I didn't want a sex scene. Anita's my fav character and she loved Bernardo and expected him to come home and didn't even get to say goodbye. That's what really sucks.

  • @lilmissmusic2012 Sorry, I didn't mean to imply you were a voyeur. I think that this is such a balanced musical (Like the Shakespeare play it is loosely based on) that any of thye pricipals could be one's favourite. Anita shows some real spunk in "America" and then some compassion in "A Boy Like That/I Love Him". I guess I identify with Tony as I share his name and have a similar vocal range. I used to go out with a girl called Maria but unfortunately she wasn't a singer.

  • @MrTonykulas :D I'm a singer too. I have a couple vids up of me singing. Do you have any up?

  • @lilmissmusic2012 Hi. It took me a while to find your comment and reply after it turned up in my email inbox. My sining range and ability deteriorated after 4 years of abusing a certain drug and smoking for many years. I am sure that, despite living a clean life now I will never get my range or falsetto back. Interestingly, my phrasing and breathing has improved. Singing "Danny Boy" yesterday was the most encouraging singing moment I have had in several years. (To be continued).

  • @lilmissmusic2012 I genuinely cried when I played Anita for our class's performance

  • @cupiekristin Wow, you must be a great actress. ;D

  • @lilmissmusic2012 not really. no, I was just sad when Anthony (Bernardo in my class) died. He's like, my bffl! But thanks for the compliment!

  • Here I am, Saturday night, 20 years old, no social life. Why can't *I* have a weekend like this WHY?! Except for the ending, of course.

  • Well they began it, well they began it...

  • A musical masterpiece! The musical team of Leonard Bernstein (composer) and Stephen Sondheim (lyricist) were absolutely brilliant!

  • 2:09

"You start singing, I'll blow your brains out."

  • I love how there are variations of the same song, and at the end, all are being sung: the Jets/Sharks war song, Anita's kicks song, and Tony and Maria's love ballade. GOD I love this movie.

  • @KayDaySilver it's called 'counterpoint' in music, and it's awesome :)

  • When everyone's voices come together at the end of the song, I get goosebumps every time.

  • It seems like everyone in New York was singing the same song at the same time.

  • this number is so powerful! I also get chills when I watch it/hear it, but it's called Quintet officially isn't it?

  • One of the best musical compositions of all time. No exaggeration. And I usually like Pink Floyd, so how do you figure that?

  • Just saw this in 70mm...INCOMPARABLE...Goosebumps throughout this...or actually throughout the entire film.

  • This sounds as good today as it did 50 years ago: the juxtaposition of the lovers and the fighters, the way it all blends so beautifully. This is an amazing musical number. It truly doesn't get any better than this.

bravenewworld711, thanks so much for making this available to not only those of us who've loved "West Side Story" for decades, but also to younger generations.

  • I'm lucky to have this song for my music history examination

  • @GreaterGood1000 music history???? what are you studying? sounds awesome

  • Thumbs up if the Jets are better.

  • LOVE THIS SONG!!!

  • 12 seconds in, one of the jets says 'the Jets are going to have their WAY', instead of 'DAY'. Listen closely....

  • @e3jf i noticed the same thing but on my recording in itunes

  • @e3jf Heard it!

  • @e3jf naw its day i have on big loud headphone i hear day

  • Krupke's face XD

  • As a musician of many years this ensemble has always been a masterpiece to me.@ 2:33 when Ice starts his "right" the vocal arrangements through the ending are freaking brilliant. Even after 50 years this still brings chills!

  • As a musician of many years this ensemble has always been a masterpiece to me.@ 2:33 when Ice starts his "right" the vocal arrangements through the ending are freaking brilliant. Even after 50 years this still brings chills!

  • This is one of my favorite ensembles from a movie musical ever.

  • これはすごい!

  • if you listen closely at 0:11, you can totally here one person in the Jets saying "the jets are gonna have their 'way' tonight" when they're supposed to say day! I listen to this song all the time, so I always hear it! love it though <3

  • @darshana90 i noticed the same thing but on my recording in itunes

  • The Puerto Ricans grumble "fair fight"

but if they want a rumble, we'll rumble em right

  • it´s really amazing, I always cry, the orchestraton is perfect...

  • I'm doing this show

    so extremely excited

auditions have been all week we find out our roles on friday!!

    wish me luck!!!!

  • 39 people arent doing anything tonight

  • A masterpiece! A wonderful ensemble!

  • This was one of the musical that influenced the South Park movie. Seriously.

  • Anyone see the stage musical world tour of this? Saw it in Aberdeen, this part is absolutely amazing!

  • Thumbs up if Jets are better!

  • This show is truly GRAND OPERA. The music is sensational as is the entire show. I love it. Too bad that music today is simply loud, vulgar, repetition of a few words that are crude and spiteful.

  • I can't get over the way the gangs sing the word Tonight, it's really annoying :S

  • I honestly need to say that the stage version's soundtrack from the 50s is better. I don't really like the way this is arranged and tempo increased ect. Regardless, great song, I love it much!

  • @PresentedIn4D The speeding up of the tempo in the other version of "Tonight" drives me crazy... It's fun to have a movie version, but the stage version's singing is superior.

  • 2:56 Oh. My God. All of the vocals coming together is breathtaking.

  • Just perfect.

  • I love this musical. I especially love this song because all of the characters feel so passionate about different things, but passionate nonetheless. People may make fun of West Side Story, but it is one of my favorites, and this is a good example of why.

  • love this production i remember doing this play i was diesel. perfect part for me, not too much dialogue, but i get to do a whole lot

  • in this at the curve theatre in leicester as a shark. sounds brilliant live :)

  • For the record, there is nothing threatening or manly about the line, "We're gonna rock it tonight. We're gonna jazz it up an have us a ball." No matter what the era. Just saying.

  • @ForceMaximus84 Maybe it was used ironically?

  • @ForceMaximus84 That was the vernacular of the time. Even gangs back in that time were very gentlemanly. You can't say "No matter what the era." because that is how they spoke back then. My grandmother grew up in the 50's; this is pretty accurate of how this were.

  • @payrollz1234 very interesting. I never notices that. Ha very apt indeed

  • i dont know why but i always get teary eyed when we reach the part where tony cleaning up in docs store

  • I LOVE THIS SONG <3 GREAT MOVIE

  • If it weren't for this movie, I wouldn't know that gangsters liked choreography. :)

  • lol

  • WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW

  • WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW

  • When I saw this on broadway...god, I got chills.

  • 'jazz it up and have us a ball' TONGHT

  • such a masterpiece of musical theater, with all the different parts and all the harmonies! such a wonderous moment in the history of theater!

  • It is interesing to note the positioning of the "Eastern Coffee Warehouse" sign and how the heads of the Jets frame it when they stop walking; at that camera angle, all we can see is the word "WAR". Very aptly placed :)

  • @payrollz1234 @2:34 in case anyone is looking to see the effect like I just was, thinking you meant the beginning (alleyway) part of the video.

  • richard beymer must've been the hottie of the 60s!

    TONIGHT!!!!!!!!! 3:16 gives me chills!

i LOVE West Side Story! my school's drama club is performing it this friday and they reserved a front row seat just for me!

  • I'm singing this with the choir and I got the Maria solo... And guess when I'm singing... TONIGHT!

  • Anyone else hear that one of the Jets in the very beginning says "way" instead of "day"? hahaha come on, jets, you're better than that!

  • @marcusline if you look at the lyrics, you'll see that the jets didn't have the word "way" in the beginning.

  • Hey guys; BEAT IT!

  • omg i loved playing maria!!! check out my videos of me singing! x x x x

  • I've just realized something.....

All of this starts on Friday afternoon and ends on Sunday night. That was one HELL of a weekend.

  • @witness124 "So what did you do this weekend?" "I went to the mall with friends. What did you do?" "I got caught in the crossfire of gang warfare and forbidden romance."

  • @witness124 lol Romeo and Juliet takes place over a course of two days also!

  • @witness124 i thought it ends on a satarday night, they meet at the gym, then at the shop where tony is told to stop the fight and that night he dies

  • I like how in the beginning, half of the Jets said Day and the other half said Way.

  • @ZacksQuest I noticed that also.

  • @ZacksQuest I was laughing so hard, I never noticed that.

  • i love dis movie i crii evry time i watch it

  • I dont get it.... they said "the jets are gonna have their day tonight" How can you have a day tonight???? lol

  • Holy shit! I LOVE WATCHING THESE OLD MUSICALS THAT I KNOW SO WELL AND HAVEN'T SEEN FOR A WHILE AND I GET THE BIGGEST CHILLS! same thing happens with les mis! I fucking love musicals!!

  • anita's part is inticing;)

  • Fuck yeah. I'm Riff, baby!!!

  • @ChillMusicVillge Congratulations.

  • @ChillMusicVillge Lucky... I know pretty much all of your lines.

  • Tonight,

    Tonight,

    Won't be just any night.

Tonight there will be no morning star!

    Tonight,

    I'll see my love tonight,
