If you think about it this movie is EXACTLY like romeo and juliet , just a little diffrent.
1.Two groups hate eachother
2.A young man and woman fall in love even thought their not suppose to
3.The main guys best friend dies after trieing to take up for him (mercutio and riff) and then the main guy (romeo and tony) kills the guy who killed his best friend (riff and tybalt).
4. The main guy dies after thinking the girl is dead
@BloodyRedFantasy You're absolutely right, and I entirely agree with you, but on #3, don't you mean "the guy who killed his best friend (bernardo and tybalt)"?
Does anybody else find it weird how they only knew each other for two days but she still wanted to be with him after he killed her own brother? I'm all for true love and stuff but...this is a little off rofl
I love ensembles songs, and this is one of the best. (Although oddly enough the Southpark movie parody 'la resistance' was pretty damned entertaining)
@flyingdragon12 How is that sad? I think that it's great that you've got such a good taste in musicals ;) Don't ever stop loving what you really love just 'cause someone says it isn't "cool" ;)
I get chills too. Here are Riff and Bernardo, just a few minutes from death, while Maria and Tony are oblivious to anything or anyone else. Who wouldn't have been seduced by Natalie Wood or Rita Moreno in this sequence?
@091053JG somehow I don't think so, because being a male dancer wasn't viewed as a sign of someones sexual orientation until recently. Also men who were the "gang members" were of a different society where manliness was valued and applauded, they didn't suffer from the identity crises that today's generations of youth so commonly have. Don't be so quick to assume... even if your "gaydar" or as the rest of the world calls it "homophobia" is certain of someones sexual preference.
i LOVE this version of tonight! this, the maria and tony noe, and america are my favorite songs! im team sharks cause theyre only violent when they need to be (it seems) i saw this movie yesterday and i fell in LOVE with it again!! it can be loved by all ages too which is awesome! my 80 yr old gramma loves it, im 13 and i love it, and my 10 yr old brother lovwes it too!!!
I think the thing that makes it the most chilling, for me, is the fact that you can predict that someone will die and the song starts out in a minor key kind-of-feel and the final chord is a major. I have no idea, but that's really haunting to me, nonetheless, a magnificent piece by a magnificent person!
So basically, Maria and Tony met, fell in love, pissed off their friends and caused a fight where Riff and Bernardo died. Then everybody got even more pissed off and Tony got shot. All over the course of a damn weekend?
@ohn0shedidnt well it is based off of Romeo and Juliet, in which the circumstances were even more greatly unrealistic and exaggerated.
Romeo and Juliet met, fell in love, their families had a long lasting hatred of one another for which no one knew the reason of, the kids got married secretly, consummated it, Juliet faked her death, Romeo killed himself, and seconds later Juliet woke up before killing herself.
Well, yeah, obviously they're lip-synching, but that doesn't mean it's not them singing. They probably recorded it in a studio and lip-synched it. TONS of musicals do this. So. What?
@SazVlogs No it isn't them, I studied the movie in music, and we saw in the bonus, there are professional singers who sung the songs. But it's great anyway!
None of these dancersa are singing. The entire score was done in with full orchestra and profesional opera singers. then the actors and singer lipped it ALL the cast.
It's a modern (at the time it was written) version of Romeo and Juliet... It kind of has to have the romance in it. I see your point, but it bothers me that you're ignoring that fact.
This musical is great but it has a problem alot of romantic movies have. Everything is more interesting than the romance, the rivalry between the 2 groups, the jets antics, the bumbling cops, and Anita are all far more entertaining than the 2 dimensional leads.
@Bwkjam Oh, yeah, when we watched it in drama, the class was in unanimous agreement: the movie would've been better if they focused solely on the gangs, and, if there HAD to be romance, focus on Anita and Bernardo.
@Amandamoo73 -- Definitely! Actually, the original lyrics to her part end with "I don't care if he's tired, as long as he's *hot.*" For the movie, they felt the need to change it to "As long as he's *here.*"
I saw this in Manhattan LONG ago. on the largest cinema screen then in existence. this ending ensemble took my breath away. literally. I also fell in love with both RIta Moreno and Natalie Woods. what a flic. what times those were back then.
I like the "well they began it" part-they jerk their heads to the opposite sides, as if the other side is standing right next to them. It's a nice touch. :)
@MrTonykulas LOL, I didn't want a sex scene. Anita's my fav character and she loved Bernardo and expected him to come home and didn't even get to say goodbye. That's what really sucks.
@lilmissmusic2012 Sorry, I didn't mean to imply you were a voyeur. I think that this is such a balanced musical (Like the Shakespeare play it is loosely based on) that any of thye pricipals could be one's favourite. Anita shows some real spunk in "America" and then some compassion in "A Boy Like That/I Love Him". I guess I identify with Tony as I share his name and have a similar vocal range. I used to go out with a girl called Maria but unfortunately she wasn't a singer.
@lilmissmusic2012 Hi. It took me a while to find your comment and reply after it turned up in my email inbox. My sining range and ability deteriorated after 4 years of abusing a certain drug and smoking for many years. I am sure that, despite living a clean life now I will never get my range or falsetto back. Interestingly, my phrasing and breathing has improved. Singing "Danny Boy" yesterday was the most encouraging singing moment I have had in several years. (To be continued).
I love how there are variations of the same song, and at the end, all are being sung: the Jets/Sharks war song, Anita's kicks song, and Tony and Maria's love ballade. GOD I love this movie.
This sounds as good today as it did 50 years ago: the juxtaposition of the lovers and the fighters, the way it all blends so beautifully. This is an amazing musical number. It truly doesn't get any better than this.
bravenewworld711, thanks so much for making this available to not only those of us who've loved "West Side Story" for decades, but also to younger generations.
As a musician of many years this ensemble has always been a masterpiece to me.@ 2:33 when Ice starts his "right" the vocal arrangements through the ending are freaking brilliant. Even after 50 years this still brings chills!
As a musician of many years this ensemble has always been a masterpiece to me.@ 2:33 when Ice starts his "right" the vocal arrangements through the ending are freaking brilliant. Even after 50 years this still brings chills!
if you listen closely at 0:11, you can totally here one person in the Jets saying "the jets are gonna have their 'way' tonight" when they're supposed to say day! I listen to this song all the time, so I always hear it! love it though <3
This show is truly GRAND OPERA. The music is sensational as is the entire show. I love it. Too bad that music today is simply loud, vulgar, repetition of a few words that are crude and spiteful.
I honestly need to say that the stage version's soundtrack from the 50s is better. I don't really like the way this is arranged and tempo increased ect. Regardless, great song, I love it much!
@PresentedIn4D The speeding up of the tempo in the other version of "Tonight" drives me crazy... It's fun to have a movie version, but the stage version's singing is superior.
I love this musical. I especially love this song because all of the characters feel so passionate about different things, but passionate nonetheless. People may make fun of West Side Story, but it is one of my favorites, and this is a good example of why.
For the record, there is nothing threatening or manly about the line, "We're gonna rock it tonight. We're gonna jazz it up an have us a ball." No matter what the era. Just saying.
@ForceMaximus84 That was the vernacular of the time. Even gangs back in that time were very gentlemanly. You can't say "No matter what the era." because that is how they spoke back then. My grandmother grew up in the 50's; this is pretty accurate of how this were.
It is interesing to note the positioning of the "Eastern Coffee Warehouse" sign and how the heads of the Jets frame it when they stop walking; at that camera angle, all we can see is the word "WAR". Very aptly placed :)
@witness124 "So what did you do this weekend?" "I went to the mall with friends. What did you do?" "I got caught in the crossfire of gang warfare and forbidden romance."
Holy shit! I LOVE WATCHING THESE OLD MUSICALS THAT I KNOW SO WELL AND HAVEN'T SEEN FOR A WHILE AND I GET THE BIGGEST CHILLS! same thing happens with les mis! I fucking love musicals!!

@ForceMaximus84 Maybe it was used ironically?
LaVFdeJL 7 months ago
@ForceMaximus84 That was the vernacular of the time. Even gangs back in that time were very gentlemanly. You can't say "No matter what the era." because that is how they spoke back then. My grandmother grew up in the 50's; this is pretty accurate of how this were.

It is interesing to note the positioning of the "Eastern Coffee Warehouse" sign and how the heads of the Jets frame it when they stop walking; at that camera angle, all we can see is the word "WAR". Very aptly placed :)

@payrollz1234 @2:34 in case anyone is looking to see the effect like I just was, thinking you meant the beginning (alleyway) part of the video.

Anyone else hear that one of the Jets in the very beginning says "way" instead of "day"? hahaha come on, jets, you're better than that!
marcusline 8 months ago
@marcusline if you look at the lyrics, you'll see that the jets didn't have the word "way" in the beginning.

I've just realized something.....
All of this starts on Friday afternoon and ends on Sunday night. That was one HELL of a weekend.
witness124 9 months ago 228
@witness124 "So what did you do this weekend?" "I went to the mall with friends. What did you do?" "I got caught in the crossfire of gang warfare and forbidden romance."

@witness124 lol Romeo and Juliet takes place over a course of two days also!
Roccarocks 7 months ago
@witness124 i thought it ends on a satarday night, they meet at the gym, then at the shop where tony is told to stop the fight and that night he dies

I like how in the beginning, half of the Jets said Day and the other half said Way.
