Titan II was the best all American rocket we ever had until the creation of Falcon9. The Titan brand was ruined by the addition of SRB's with Titan III. The Titan II launched all the way until 2003 even after being in storage for perhaps 35 years. It was very reliable, low cost, could be fueled fast, could take 3 different types of fuel, and the only rocket to achieve single stage to orbit.

I agree with some comments on here. NASA has been a great accomplishment for the USA and mankind. But we've been traveling in space for over 30 years and we've never gotten a man passed the moon. U would think we would have a station on the moon by now we've been to it so many times. Maybe if NASA wasn't a government agency, and a private corporation, we probably would have some of those things.

These shuttles were fairly cool and all that, but did they really accomplish THAT much in recognition of their cost? I mean it never went beyond orbit distance? Thats like me buying a Ferrari and using it solely for driving down to the shops to get milk.

Delivered satellites, captured and repaired satellites, brought back satellites, used as a laboratory, built the ISS etc. It was designed for low earth orbit and thats where it was used. Because we can.....

A nice pre-dawn landing. This is truly the end of an era. I have followed the space shuttle program since it began in 1981 when I was in high school. This magnificcent spacecraft will be missed by all of the NASA and space exploration fans alike,including me. It will be so akward not seeing an orbiter sitting Launch pad 39B preparing for flight. God bless the entire shuttle program and all those who contributed to it and made it happen for the last thirty years.

@fugehdehyou Well there are private companies with prototype space shuttles that NASA is looking at right now. There are also private companies with there own space satellites. NASA opened up the possibility of using a private shuttle to explore space.
I agree that there might not be much profit involved besides giving tours to the moon or orbiting around the Earth maybe. Although something like that wouldn't be affordable to the ordinary American.

Defense spending as a % of GDP has actually been decreasing below the historical average in the last decade despite the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. 60% of the federal budget IS however entitlement and welfare spending. So u can accurately say that "most" of our money is actually spent on entitlement and welfare programs NOT defense.

Delivered satellites, captured and repaired satellites, brought back satellites, used as a laboratory, built the ISS etc. It was designed for low earth orbit and thats where it was used. Sometimes doing something that has never been done before doesnt make economic sense and never will. Why drink milk, coke, beer etc. when water is plentyful and the others cost money to maufacture ? Because we can.....

A nice pre-dawn landing. This is truly the end of an era. I have followed the space shuttle program since it began in 1981 when I was in high school. This magnificcent spacecraft will be missed by all of the NASA and space exploration fans alike,including me. It will be so akward not seeing an orbiter sitting Launch pad 39B preparing for flight. @MyTube22T I somewhat know the history, not saying I'm an expert or anything. When we started we were a perfect government, imo. But over time and with the 2 great world wars/Manifest Destiny, we have become a somewhat imperialistic nation. I wish we could fall from the status of "Superpower" and return to a more isolationist type government. Another thing that is going to be the ruin of this country are the political parties. I'm hopeful for my country but...The shadows of greed are strong.
