I see the whole thing as a joke, very bad taste joke, but a joke, he is sarcastic and even laughing.. come on! Israel SHOULD be a mayor pain in the ass to zeropa but is way more decent.
One of my grandfathers was in the Belgian resistance; was sent to Bergen Belsen..
He saw how jews were even treated worse before being shot or dragged away ,never to be seen again.

@Hammid : is "being popular" more important than the possible damages Von Trier's little show might have caused to the families of the victims butchered by the nazis on the one hand, and to the part of the worldwide public that doesn't have the hindsight you seem to have, on the other hand ? Curiously, I find this whole quest for celebrity (not that the man needed it...) one of the themes of the film, centered (if you ask me) around a certain decline of modern day human relationships...

He's actually telling the truth in the beginning, he grew up believing his father Ulf Trier was Jewish. Shortly before her death in 1995 his mother confessed to him that his biological father was her former employer Fritz Michael Hartmann, a German. He geaduated with a film called "Befrielsesbilleder" (you can watch it on yt), which deals with the Nazis. At that time he still believed he was half Jewish.
