  • misleading title. it said 'themes' i was expecting more than just one. dislike for that

  • Montgomery only knew attrition. When they were trying to cross, I believe the Rhine river, he took almost six months to make small two mile crossing. He wanted a sole British force to take a small beach head. Market-Garden could have been pulled off, if Montgomery had assumed their would be Panzer divisions. I would have. Never assume the enemy will not come out in force, always assume the worst, and expect the most from your enemy. He wanted glory, all he got was sweat and tears.

  • cool

  • Montgomery was actually a fairly decent general, when he played the game he knew. What he learned from WWI was to plan every move in detail and pile up overwhelming amounts of ordnance, then grind the enemy down. The Market-Garden plan was completely atypical of Montgomery. It was the kind of plan a general like Rommel might have been able to pull off, by leading from the front and extemporizing like mad. And then only if there hadn't been panzers at the objective.

  • monty was useless. with market garden he only justified he was one. the 1st airbonre got annihlated at arnhem

  • Interesting comment on the DVD extas: "Regarded by many as Germany's worst ever victory; If the Allies had won at Arnhem - they, and not the Soviets, would have occupied all of Berlin and most of Germany."

  • Montgomery was actually a pretty poor general, its only the british propaganda what made him the "saviour of the free world" Eisenhower wanted to use his own better generals but churchill wanted a brittish general in command also.

  • If there were any display of supreme arrogance and over confidence on the part of any man involved in MARKET-GARDEN you may rightfully place it upon Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery.

  • This soundtrack was the most "mismatched " soundtrack ever. Kinda like "Operation Market-Garden" another Montgomery fiasco.

  • Great film

  • What a stupid dick head to come out with inane comment like that, I believe he has done that just to spark of controversy. Its not just English, Americans, Irish, Canadians, Australians, but all different nationalities who fought against the germans, Indian, Pakistanis, Fijians, Africans, and not forgeting the Ghurkas, it was a joint effort for all our allies, let us not forget that!!!

  • Market Garden: another Bernard Montgomery cluster fuck!

  • A Masterful Genius score to a film of legendary cinema history with a immensely superb starring cast!!!

  • If Market-Garden worked, then it would be like the German assault on Crete, victory at a high cost. The gambit was bold and could have worked but too bad the inteligence overlooked the panzers present and the allied leaders were like "Let's get on with it". Still valor on both sides was incredible-The Waal crossing, the british defence at Arnhem and the yanks at Son and Nijmegen. (look up Pvt. John Towle, CMH winner) I salute them all!

  • @Curtissaviation operation market garden was a disaster from the very beginning because of bad planning and the superior attitude if the British high command. The British did not seem to realize that the German soldier was every bit as tough and well trained as the English.....and they they seemed to have forgotten that a rag-tag rebel Irish citizen army had fought them to a stand still twenty years before. The main problem with the British was a lack of memory.

  • @river2walk I agree with you. It was a combination of factors which led to the failure. I do believe it COULD have worked but only if the right circumstances were present.

  • Operation was a HIGHLY risky attempt to initiate. The plan Market could have succeeded with the help of using two airborne divisions at Arnhem 1st airborne and the 51st Highland Airborne. Also The plan Garden was sloppy if XXX Corps would have not slowed down then this whole operation would have been a successful dash across Holland and quickly over the Rhine

  • Farming looks mighty easy when your plow is a pencil and you're a thousand miles from the corn field.

  • You said it kealyc, the fighting man always get's the dirty end of the stick, I remember having to stay in the same uniform for 2-3 months before changing into a fresh one, including underwear ! Fied rations do get old after a month, take care buddy

  • To me this music is genius and fantastically well applied in the film, moving you to hope, despair, optimism, pride, disbelief and awe at the event. A well researched, cast and executed film - -at least the Brits and the Yanks did that right!! - special mention Gene Hackman representing the valiant Poles.

  • I still love the soundtrack of Band of Brothers the most (:

  • What if they gave a war and nobody came

  • Ain't gonna happen: people love it too much. If you don't then you just haven't found one that 'appeals.'

  • there is alway's somebody who wants to fight for his country

    RIGHT GUY'S!!!

  • @KoesKoes99 Montgomery was a sissy, and I'm glad patton beat his ass to El Alemein!

  • @skudaarkaat1 I would agree that Montgomery was much over rated and his "victory" at El Alemein (which had absolutely nothing to do with Patton and happened before the US set foot in N. Africa) should really be attributed to General Alexander who turned the war in the desert in Britains favour before handing over to Montgomery.

  • @KoesKoes99 SIR NO! SIR!!!

(sorry i had to do it... i know this comment is OOOOLD btw... xD )

  • not clearing the scheldt estuary was the major mistake opeing up the port of amsterdam...general horrocks is the only general that i have read about who admitted that it was a great mistake and pretty much took the blame for that saying no one thought of it..

  • I can just see Montegomery driving away from that one with a "SHIT HAPPENS" bumper sticker on his jeep.

  • Exactly, cornskid, he didn't give a fuck; he just wanted to get into Germany before Patton. Monty should have resigned following Market Garden. he paid tribute to the Paras afterwards (every man an emperor) so that they wouldn't think of criticizing him. Instead, the Paras hated XXX Corps.

  • Great to see in modern ireland that the men and women who fought and died in both world wars are getting there due recognition now-they fought not for queen and country but to feed there families

  • I am Irish but I have uncles who fought for all our freedom in the R.A.F. during W.11. And I'll never forget the sacrifice they and thousands of others they made to ensure our freedom...We can never, ever repay such heroes. Long live the R.A.F and freedom for all men.

  • @Fanfardon You are one vone zeely leetle Feunchman, the Germans steamrolled over the French in six weeks and if it were not for the Allies your country would only be a footnote in history....not the fault of the brave resistance fighters but of the morons who were in charge. As for the Irish doing nothing in the war....many fought and died in both wars..but we had our own wars to fight while the rest of Europe was at peace....Now for God sake take your medication, Viva La France!!

  • @river2walk You make much more sense than the frog asshole above. I have despised the French ever since they fucked us over in Libya in the 70's, and hope if they ever get into trouble again, we tell them where to go. They are the most UNGRATEFUL people on earth!!!!

  • @Fanfardon u just gave me the first belly laugh of the day ;-)

  • @Fanfardon Hey, Frog, did you forget what happened on and after 6 June 1944?

Pull your head out of your ass, you parasite! OH - I'M SORRY the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions were FICTITIOUS and did absolutely NOTHING, according to your gratuitous assertion.

BEFORE 6 June 44 VICHY French troops OUTNUMBERED the Germans in France.

AFTER THE WAR there were more "resistance fighters" than there were French Army - yeah, right.

France - ALWAYS THERE WHEN THEY NEED THE USA!

  • @DrMotorDude dont forget the amount of British and Canadian Troops which stormed the beaches as well at Gold and Juno beach. and the 1st Airbourne Division who fought side by side with the 101st. yeh sure there were French divisions which fought at D-day but it was the Americans and us Brits who did most of the dirty work. this guy clearly has no respect to the thousands of brave Allied forces who died liberating his country

  • @dixie60 agreed! But there is NO excuse for the Vichy.

  • @Fanfardon

Let me guess, you French didn't actually get occupied in the first place, rite?

Gotta love kids making outlandish claims.

  • @CrimzonReaperII Now your getting it old boy!

  • @Fanfardon . The Allied armies have Liberated your country from the Germans 2 times in 25 years, How can you say France defeated Germany single handed. Take a walk thru Normandy and try counting the graves of those young men who gave there lives for your Country. Then thank god for your freedom and don't forget your Allies who have stood by France thru recent history. US Army Retired

  • @Fanfardon Charles De Gaulle said D-Day wouldn't work but look what happened. The French lost to the Germans because they were still using WW1 tactics. The French are always a war behind so thats why the British and its Commonwealth and the Americans had to save you frog ass.

  • @Fanfardon Tell the same to Guderian and his panzers in 1940, hero!

  • @Fanfardon snail eating pricks surrendered the first fuckin chance you got

  • @Fanfardon shut up its not funny svinehound

  • @Fanfardon Bullshit. You're a high and mighty frenchie with no self esteem, just like the rest of your pussy friends. How about you go sell more of your women to prostitution and have your men make gay ass watercolors of art. I took french you douche, I'm part French you douche, Time to forget your old chivalric days, and start growing a pair. Lord knows you idiots practically fuck anything that moves in Paris. Being that pussy is the one thing you can't go without.

  • @Fanfardon Had it not been for the U.S., you'd be sucking some SS cock just so you didn't get sent to a concentration camp. You would sell out your friends, only to make up for your own kudos. Fuck the French, they were never good for anything anyways.

  • @river2walk Hi again. My mom's maiden name was McRee, and I LOVE the Irish! Erin Go Braugh!!!!!

  • makethe 28 div memory not the best the us first army sufferred over 30,000 casualties...field marshall model is credited with the defense the cost so much for the american army ...

  • hurtgen forest brutal..29 division pretty much shot to pieces...if i remember correctly eddie slovak was executed because he couldnt take it anymore during this particular battle..

mates there are many poor decisions that result in waste of damn fine soldiers throughout history..there was some bad luck especially the refit of the panzer corps..

  • my best mate was in the parras that were used in the drop sequence.they were all real parras that day

  • I saw this movie in the theater when it came out. I left the theater so angry at the shear bloody waste of the British and Polish Paratroopers.

  • You and me mate. The battle of Arnhem left ten thousand brave soldiers dead fighting a battle they could never win. A simmilar battle happened in Hurtgen forrest, read it if you can get it, Arnhem pales into insignifence. Upto 40 thousand US soldiers were killed and wounded trying to take a forrest that had no strategic value. Who were the real heros of W11 or W1? and all the other wars The top brass got the glory but the private with his 303 rifle was lucky to come home in one piace,

  • Yes, and similar to the Palaus campaign in the Pacific which happened in the same time frame as Hurtgen and Market-Garden. What a lousy period in the war.

  • Market garden was a tarded idea, added months to the war......still if it had worked it would have taken months off the war, you cannot win em all

  • Poorly plannned , with no thought for proper intel.

  • still Eagle027, a lot of circumstances helped in the operation failiure, like the weather, small number of gliders to transport the british 1st airborne, and many others, but still it was a poor plan

  • Tremendous music, and an even more tremendous story of courage and sacrifice, those men deserve our eternal thanks, 'we must not forget'!!!

  • Never fear...these brave men will always be remembered!

  • one of the great if"s: british didnt have enough paratroops but used mostly gliders...1st airborne had to land several miles away..now if the 101 or 82 made the drop..may have been much closer to the bridge..then who knows..

  • I have been to Arnhem and was last there on the 60th Anniversary, and amazing experience...The whole Dutch nation salutes those brave Paratroopers, every anniversary, with school child putting flowers on every grave stone, and tending the graves as part of their schooling....If you get the chance to go in September for the 65th it will bring a lump to your throat.....

  • I remember going to see the film in 77 when it came out, still remains a good memory. I stayed in Arnhem last year and visited the airborne museum in Oosterbeek, well worth a visit.

  • Must be some atmosphere there !....hope to visit some day!.....take care

  • I'm going there tomorrow!

  • If your serious I hope you have a great trip but remember "ze air is still thick vith flying cricket balls!

  • How did this film only make 7th? In who's pole? It's got to be the best, look at the cast list, you'll never get that calibre of stars together again, we couldnt afford the wages, Id love to see a remake done though, proper stuff and not bloated with CGI.

  • It is indeed one of the great war movies and was almost one hundred per cent factual, especially the sequence when Tony Hopkins and his men bravely held the bridge....Unfortunately the mission is generally regarded as one of the great failures of modern warfare, and perhaps it was, but the film was brilliantly made and the action sequences and actors were to the highest standards so....raylean1966.....I'm with you one hundred percent!! lol

  • Shame i can't spell poll properly....doh

  • Fantastic film. Fantastic music. Thankyou!
