Imperialism in her sense was well before fences...in fact, fences prevented some of the violence of imperialism. Inefficient generation of calories prior to technology led to the need for more land to obtain food supplies--does she not realize there was warfare over hunting lands, for example?!
@Gondring Hunter-gathers did encounter violence, but certainly not warfare. Systematic warfare didn't occur until we settled and even more so when we picked up agriculture. Think about it; when you have a surplus of food grown, you have to have a military to protect it. This is also the beginning of patriarchy, because the society begins to prefer males over females in order to have a warrior society. Violence did happen between hunter-gatherer groups, but nothing like agricultural societies.
I'll believe in sustainabity when I hear lots and lots of people agreeing not to have children. The imperialism is not a 'they' thing, it's a genetic 'us' thing. All animals, including humans are genetically driven to replicate until they exhaust the carrying capacity of the context, then they die off.
when I read "Chellis Glendinning on Global Sustainability" I was excited to watch a "Sustainability" presentation. what I know about Sustainability is that it has to do with health of mind, body and spirit. Sustainability is all about healing wounds; overcoming obstacles; building on the understandings of the past and letting go of that which is outside of Sustainability. ...perhaps this 3:17 is a part of a whole commentary. I'd be interested in finding commentaries on Global Sustainability
Sustainability as a concept must contain 'ecology ' which gives it meaning. Sustainability is the ability to maintain or restore the carrying capacity or ecological resilience of our natural systems (which have the inherent capacity to sustain life) - to a level where they continue to supply the 'green capital e.g., clean water, soil and air we need to survive.
the title uses the word sustainability yet the commentary was on imperialism and that was my point. I went so far as to give benefit of doubt that this video was perhaps a part of a larger commentary on sustainability : )
your reply makes me wonder if you read or understood any of what I typed
Expand or die that is corporate, government's understanding of survival. It is the truth of every collection of organisms or ideas such as religion, socialism, capitalism, fascism etc.
If it does not expand it will eventually be taken over by another expanding system.
Does not make it right just makes it the truth. ;)
What good people need to understand is we need to use the inherent evil to expand the freedom of choice. It is only though choice not lack there of where goodness comes.
Clueless right from the start.

@PalmyBruce -- I'll believe it when the third world stops. It's not the most developed nations that are booming in birth rate.
Gondring 1 year ago
@Gondring Third world countries aren't the ones gobbling up the world's resources. It's the developed nations.

Now, how does overpopulation fit into the analysis?

Resilient ecosystems = Life
Degraded ecosystems = our extinction

I like where she was going with the dissociation theory and how it is inherent in imperialist societies.
