The common mistake for us is that we don't check it out at first if we are qualified to give any comment to any performance of these masters. Even though we can say that we have been taught in other way, just think about if our teachers/couches are able to justify the performances.
We can surely give our feedback to anything. Feedback isn't the same as comment.

Yea i know right? At 1:28 there's a g sharp that he clearly is NOT vibrating with his left hand. But you can clearly hear the vibrato come through. And this is supposed to be a live performance? I agree with jwunschie
@tudoryka79 even though i made that comment several months ago, i now stand by what i said, primarily because this simply isn't the character of the movement, at least what I was taught at IU. My teacher would scold me if i played in this fashion! By the way, perfect accuracy where i come from is implied, so his accuracy (which is of course very good!) does not make or break this performance. This movement is not characterized by 'buzz saw' vibrato for god's (or Bach's) sake...
I have seen before many "strange" things in this magnific videos of Shafran, like his "fantasia-fingering", but the g sharp of 1' 30'' is really strange: it sounds with vibrato but his hand IS NOT! I just can do that when I am nervous and my bow is shaking! But obviously this is not with Shafran...
Guys...this is art...there is nothing fake here. You can see and hear how this guy is in a trance.Nothing wich is not honest...everything is so honest and so intense living every note, every fraze . This is a real artist. I would say he is a genious but he is more than this because of the divine touch
I wonder if there is a rule of how fast or how slow vibrato should be....well, Who cares!!! I love Shafran's way of delivering exactly what he wants to say about the music he plays...he touches my heart alot more than any other cellist including Rostropovich. Why? others are similar, Shafran is god damn unique and interesting. You never know what he wants to do next and when he does it, it ALWAYS sounds nice with good taste!
Mr. Shafran's vibrato was his main distinguishing characteristic- some people loved him for it, others thought it was excessive.....Still, a great player- a complete master of his instrument!
You never know. Although he may not have reached similar reputation of Rostropovich, he is still an amazing cellist with his own unique skill and interpretation.
Both cellists were geniuses and among the finest, but both were also kept from touring by the Russian government. When they were finally permitted, Rostropovich ended up touring much further and becoming the legend that he is. You could be saying the opposite if things went the other way.
@snorlaxsnore Could you stop everyone saying about his vibrato....in every video i am watching of him someone makes the same comment..This is his STYLE this is the was he used to play....if you don't like him don't listem to him !
Nitroidus1,you and I will be forgotten in 50 years...but Shafran will forever keep on being one of the most interesting, original and one of the most shining stars in the cello-sky ... as for Slava, he has got too many top prizes for his albums both as a cellist and as a conductor,so I think many of todays top cellists and conductors are feeling nothing but a great debt, love and respect to his legacy.
It's out of tune! Christ! Awful! I don't care how good a musician he is. Rostropovich was a good musician but I know first hand that he couldn't conduct for his life and I don't know anyone else who's he's conducted who would disagree!
I am in fact referring to the vibrato he uses that knocks notes out of tune. Jian Wang's recording of the Bach is a semi tone low but he still is in tune.
Shafran is the best cellist of 20th century! His tone, phrase and bow technik is unbelievable! I just love his performances and especially what he does with the music...
no sera una interpretacion muy barroca pero es hermosa, me encanta como toca, a mi tambien se me hace un poco exagerado aveces el vibrato pero me gusta mucho como suena
his kabalevsky no 2 is great and his prokofiev is amazing. wow.. i just saw his fingers.. it looks like they have minds of their own ... insane. if only i could see his kabalevsky fingerings in person
Hmm, It feels like he attacks the piece with a bit too much or intense of a vibrato, especially for a Baroque piece. But he still plays the piece wonderfully and I respect his interpretation.
I like what he does with it musically, though I'd do things differently... the soudn quality is a bit weird... either that or it's just his vibrato... doesn't really work with me so much...
thanks a lot for post this video. for the people who does not know shafran he is the best cellist of the last years really he makes magic with the cello
Wow, such a great interpretation

Interesting vibrato. His cello has a peculiar sound to it...
Yo-Yo Ma's version is better, I'd recommend listening to that version, although I do like Shafran's fluid ending more.
Best Cello Suite of Bach's in my opinion.

It's obvious that, since this is an old recording, the pitch is 1/2 a tone higher. He is definitely not out of tune.

its like if they were saying that a baroque cello would be out of tune. which it really woudlnt because they are tuned it diffrently.
