As a young woman and an african american, i've also thought that these older women voters for hillary were on a different page.If i had to decide which was the greater evil: present day sexism vs present day racism, it's pretty obvious to me which is the worst. Interesting that what some of these women are saying is the same exact thing that some in the black community, ie: Rev Wright, are saying. Just as some older women in the Clinton movement want to make sure we no longer live in the 60's again, some older blacks are saying the same thing. I think it's going to be very hard to rebuild after using all these emotion-based attacks. If people are persuaded by a logical argument, they don't have much of an emotional stake in the outcome - they're curious more than fraught. To claim that Obama has run a sexist campaign is preposterous. In fact, of all US men, I'd suspect that Obama has the highest respect and understanding for women simply given his sole male presence in his household. He chose a strong, intelligent, independent woman for his wife, and certainly he would want boundless opportunities for his young daughters. As for societal sexism, a simple stat analysis would deny the claim that Clinton's gender was more disadvantageous than Obama' race.

Look at the "Iron my Shirt" protester and the way the media portrayed her. Sexism still exists. As a Hillary supporter, I had to constantly hear about how a woman shouldn't be president including from one of my high school teachers. As a young woman and an african american, i've also thought that these older women voters for hillary were on a different page.If i had to decide which was the greater evil: present day sexism vs present day racism, it's pretty obvious to me which is the worst. If I were employed at some male-dominated job, maybe I'd feel the sexism more but I think for most working women today, sexism is not something they worry about everyday whereas I worry about the color of my skin at least once a day.

Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister of Britain in the 80s and even lead Britain to war against Argentina in the Falklands. Angela Merkel is leader of Germany right now. The late Benazir Bhutto was leader of Pakistan. There have been many female leaders in the past and there will be many more in the future. Obama is the better candidate,and has already improved the image of the US abroad. His desire for diplomacy will also help.

I'll be honest. I used to support Hilary. But after the polls started turning and I read more about the issue's, I turned to Obama. But I think that Hilary is still a good person and though she won't become president, she would greatly help her party by getting those woman to it's side. Then she might be able to win in 2012. I'd rather have anyone over McCain because I don't trust what the flip flop he's recently made and I think he's another George Bush.

Nobody has any problem having this discussion about Obama's presumed sexism -- but where, outside of comedy shows, will you find a single commentator on any network or cable show who's prepared to even hint at the possibility that Clinton's huge victory in WV or her lead in Kentucky is due to the fact that poor rural whites are a *bunch of racists* -- that they vote for her because they don't want to vote for a black guy.

I'm not saying that sexism and racism don't exist, but I am saying that from the coverage of this election the media found sexism tolerable andeven led in sexist comments, but racism was rightfully treated seriously. I don't support Ferraro, but she made a valid point when saying we turned a blind eye to people saying "iron my shirt" at Hillary's rally, but we would have reacted differently if some1 said "shine my shoes" at an Obama rally. I don't recall much in the way of media coverage to the tee shirts showing Obama as a monkey with a banana. And while there's a lot of people who use epithets like "bitch" toward HC, I don't know that that's any more sexist than people calling Bush a "dickhead" -- just because an epithet is sex-specific doesn't make it sexist.
As to whether a black man has the advantage or the disadvantage over a white woman in terms of entrenched prejudices in this country -- I think it's a hard call.

The thing that's difficult about sexism, is that crosses all cultures where it can be privatly tolerated in each family. Any one who held Bill's affair against Hillary as a reason not to support her were sexist as that's saying her private life & not even actions were considered as a qualifications for a job.Hillary not becoming President, doesn't make America sexist, but the fact they tolerated her being called a bitch & would react differently to people called a nigger shows sexism acceptable.

The only pass I'll give to Ferraro is that when asked on camera, Michelle Obama DID refuse to say that she would support Clinton if she were the candidate. I was very upset with that, and it's probably still sticking in the craws of women who still support Clinton

Interesting that what some of these women are saying is the same exact thing that some in the black community, ie: Rev Wright, are saying. Just as some older women in the Clinton movement want to make sure we no longer live in the 60's again, some older blacks are saying the same thing. Why can't each side see that the 60's are long gone and this is now the 21st century? Yes we still have along way to go but at least we're on the right road and moving in the right direction.

I think it's going to be very hard to rebuild after using all these emotion-based attacks. If people are persuaded by a logical argument, they don't have much of an emotional stake in the outcome - they're curious more than fraught. But once it's about sex or race, it's much harder to put the genie back in the bottle. BTW, I agree with your main point, Cenk. Any credibility Clinton has going forward as a Democrat will be directly tied to her willingness to undo the damage she has done.

In fact, of all US men, I'd suspect that Obama has the highest respect and understanding for women simply given his sole male presence in his household. He chose a strong, intelligent, independent woman for his wife, and certainly he would want boundless opportunities for his young daughters. As for societal sexism, a simple stat analysis would deny the claim that Clinton's gender was more disadvantageous than Obama' race.

Real Time w/Bill Maher discussed this age divide with women a while back. It's a real interesting study. Women in their 20's are very liberal. But those same women in their later years are very conservative. It's very strange to see that development in SOOOOO many women. The theory behind it is motherhood changes them. So of course it's not surprising to me that the GILFs and GIWNLFs would vote McCain before Obama.
