I agree with musicredshoes regarding pronounciation, however this is not even the case.

Tarja speaks english and 4-5 languages perfectly like a native (and sings in another 6-7 more), but when singing she pronounces some words with an accent-like connotation.

It's a trademark of hers, an artistical feat and she does it because simply it sounds better.

IMHO it really does sound better, darker and more exotic.

I am being trained in singing and pronouncing the words is very important otherwise if you are a soprano people wouldn't be able to understand what you're saying, my voice is not developed yet so they don't know what I actually am, but I'm between Mezzo soprano and Dramatic soprano, even with classical there are many things you have to think about, like breathing technique and many other complex things that you have to do at the same time so really the way the word is said doesn't matter ;)

Sutherland had those troubles, as well as Marilyn Horne, one of the best mezzo-sopranos ever. What I mean is that is actually a common issue on classical singers to have prounciation troubles, because their voice projection requires special techniques and sometimes they are more concerned about those technical parts than about pronoucing words. If Tarja was English maybe you wouldn't notice that much, But she is finnish!
