Hemi Killer, LOL ! Might beat a new hemi pickup.. Those stage 1 are fast as any on the street, stock. But not a good Race engine like the Hemi. I'm sure most doofus's 350 Chevy with a 3/4cam, headers and 4:56 gear think they are hot shit, Hemi killers too..Only reason GM stuff dominates racing after 1971 is because of the rules. I was a GM dealer during this time. This car is unquestionably one of GM's finest but against a hemi Cuda ? I hate saying this, but all this car would see is taillights and smoke. The fastest production GM of 1970 was the LS6 Chevelle SS. A close second was the L88 427 Corvette. The 1970 426 duel quad Hemi Cuda was untouchable off the trailer.
my dad had a 72 skylark with the stage 2 motor at the time i was a little boy like 6 or 7 yrs old so i name it the bumble bee i loved and missed that car
@71powerwagon I'm a Mopar guy all the way, but to call this car, or it's engine junk, is just wrong. This is in my opinion dead even with the 1971 HEMI Cuda as the most beautiful car ever made.
Hemi killer!? I don't think so! I know so! A 440 would spank these cars! Why didn't they just call this Buick a Chevy? Or a gto judge? Same motor. Why wasn't this car breaking records like Mopars were? Lol
@71powerwagon None of those cars had the same motors. 455 buick is not the same as a 455 pontiac or Olds. And yes the buick 455 stage 1 was a lttle faster than the hemi in the 1/4. mopars are awsome but the GSX stage 1 is king in my book.
One of my friends dad had one of these, the tourqe at low rpm is ridiculous, if gas prices never went up makes youthink where would the muscle car would have been today, although there are making a comback, just wondering.
DROVE ONE! SO MUCH TORQUE. this is a fast car. hemi killer??? yea its got a chance. im a die hard mopar guy and i think it would be a good race. drove some hemis also. but i think a 440-6 would take it. the 6 pak was awsome.
It would run WITH a '68+ street hemi, but wouldn't "kill" one.
Thing is, the Buick had a very weak block (2 bolt mains and thin wall lifter galley) and an undersized lubricating system. As such, the Buick 455 Stage 1 wouldn't hole up to extended high performance use, while the Hemi's block was MUCH stronger.
another yellow one was in the castle shannon area kinda close the the old grove - that was the only other one I knew of at the time . Later a guy drove around in a white one around in the Greentree area- name was Tom, worked at a beer distributor on Noblestown Road - probably still has it. My GSX definitely stood out in the high school parking lot!
My brother and I had fun with a 70 GSX in the South Hills area of Pittsburgh in the early to mid 70s. Went to Canevin High School. My neigbor came over and wanted to know how we got the Saturn Yellow car to shine so good - we laughed and told him the truth we washed it with Tide! 455 Stage 1 motor rocked. Took it out to South Park a few times and ate up some Nova's & Roadrunners for fun. Only loss was to a hopped up 69 SS 396. Car stolen in 86, if u know of one bought in 86 let me know.
Just about anything on the street would eat up a Hemi back in the day because they weren't made to tool around town and would load up like hell. You need a good rolling start on a freeway or a long stretch of road to get them cleaned out and ready to kill the competition, not to mention the skill to tune that beast every time you drove it. But I do love a good looking and performing Buick.
Search Muscle Car Shootout. A GS Stage 1 convertible with A/C, automatic and power windows ran with the Hemi 'Cuda 4 speed. If you know your muscle cars you'd realized that the GS was a heavy optioned out luxury cruiser. If it were a barebones coupe like the rest of those cars it would have wiped the face of the earth with them.
@5191keith lol sorry but i disagree, when they do the factory runs, the gsx was faster than any other car, the only other car that came close was the Chevelle
@Buick70GSX i agree. i have had so many fights with people who refuse to read facts. they love to quote high hp numbers but at the same time the 455 had the torque and lighter weight block . And as it has been seen , you can build a monster 455 with high hp. i really don't know what the fuss is, the 455 has already proven it can run with just about anything.
the only thing this needs to bring it up to the 21st century is to have the original wheels steel banded a couple of inches to fill it out a bit ,and maybe lower the car about two inches ,and leave it at that...minimalist work to get the maximum effect!
@MrGeo7k - Same here, I actually thought it was a Chevy Chevelle SS for a long time, because I was just a kid when that game was coming out (I think it was 1996 or so) and I didn't know much about muscle cars back then, especially since you never see them anywhere on the streets over here (Germany). A couple of years later when internet access became more available, I looked up everything and have been dreaming of driving one of these across the US eversince. One day... one day.
@schlafanzyk Driver actually came out in 1998,and the 2 first games are some of my favourite. When l saw the replay in the Demo (the final release of Driver didn't include this car) l really loved it and wanted to drive it.l hope one day l'll drive it atleast once! :D
@MrGeo7k Right, 1996 was Destruction Derby 2, which was my favorite game before that. It's almost sad that a videogame is pretty much the closest you will ever get to one of these in Europe. With the fuel and insurance costs pretty much twice as high, you just can't afford driving one of those muscle cars here.
@schlafanzyk Unfortunately, yes, you're right.l haven't even seen one of those awesome muscle cars in real life yet. :( Destruction Derby series rocked on PlayStation 1 (l still play on my PS1 lol!),l don't know about PS2.Actually,both Driver and Desruction Derby series were made by the same company (Reflections, now known as Ubisoft Reflections l think).l love those games to death! :D
@5191keith ----- Continued from above --- Just because a car had a Hemi, 440, 454, 428 or 455 there is no guarantee that and will be faster than all others because of factory tuning being inconsistent. Take all the muscle cars and equipped them with say a 4.10 gear, positive traction with similar tires and same test driver for all. In theory the advantage will go to the Hemi, LS6 454 over all the others because they came with better heads, camshafts and carburetors. continue part 3 follows
@5191keith Exactly. Some cars had their power down low, some high end. It's all in the breathing with factory. mods you have mentioned. The Buick might take the quarter on these cars but i will bet on the LS6 and the HEMI for anything after that. the Buick's torque is its advantage(510FT/LBS). All being said , the GS/GSX becomes a raging maniac with open headers. Although i love Mopars, i'll take a GSX over all of them with exception of th'69 Dodge Charger 440/HEMI.
@5191keith i'm basing it on all things considered equal, no ringers, equal talent, etc. or the same driver running a quarter mile, one at a time, with both cars. i agree with driver part when racing against one another. give me a mid sixties nova ss with the 327. if i get out earlier, it will take that big block up to 90mph to finally catch me.
Ok. It goes like this. If you were to race a 440 and a Hemi, the 440 would launch out earlier but the Hemi will run it down at the 1/4 mile mark. In other words i would bet on the 440 for stoplight to stoplight races. Any thing beyond that, the Hemi is the winner. Buicks 455 will beat the Hemi in the quarter, but the Hemi will have a higher trap, meaning the Hemi will takeover after that. The Hemi is a detuned race motor (top end power), hence they are superior for dragsters.
I'm a chevy guy but I must admit the hemi is very prolific in top fuel and funny car,so I guess you can say hemi's do rule the dragstrip when it comes to nhra and ihra
i have a uncle in michigan that has one in apollo white that we took to the BACK TO THE BRICKS CAR SHOW too bad the idle was set too low for cruise haha
400hp... pretty much normal for a muscle car... but almost 700ft torque... sure it will kill hemis and whatever comes out. forget camaros and corvettes, for me, a ford and chrysler guy, THIS is the ultimate muscle car. and its so underrated...
@machone7I Where the hell do you get your numbers from?????700 ft lbs of torque my ass it is 510 lbs of torque. If you dont know dont say ridiculous things.
@camirocz i got the data from a classic car magazine that is written in spanish. and it wasnt clear in wich units they said that, plus ive got to translate it to english. because there are all those different units you have to translate from european units to american or english, and also you have to translate the language.and anyway could you tell in wich units its the buick GS's torque written in?
@worldtravel101 well, in a classic car magazine they wrote about six hundred seventy something in i dont remember wich units. or probably i got confused about the car. maybe it wasnt a random GSX it could be a more powerful version. what i know, is that if it was around 675 x units of torque. and in the same article they compared it to an actual porshe, with around 290 x torque units and a ferrari with thre hundred something units, and that makes the car a beast. being that the about 40 yearsago
@bastardeyez That gets it right... I had read the report in my native language, so i dind't know how to translate it... That proves everything, More or less 700 nm and 510 lb-ft.
they always want twice as much as the highest price in the price guides at these classic car shops. In excellent condition, that car is worth about $30-35K, not 75K. Same with the 56 chevy. The guy wanted $80K because it had an original A/C, its worth half that.
NO doubt, just wished they had made the 4 bolt main a production block, I wished I had one of the RnD 4 bolt main blocks man, OH THE THINGS YOU COULD DO........ hahahahaha ......... CAUSE I'M THINKIN TWIN TURBO 66' SPECIAL WITH A 455, the only way to fly .................. ;-)
Awesome. as far as i go i would rather have this than a chevelle ss ls6. And i love that car also , but this is unique to a point of holy grail. and i have seen them leave a ss at the starting line. lol.
Muscle cars off the showroom floor dragstrip times were so underrated its redikulez. The tires used at the time even the slicks had nowhere near the stick that todays tires rubber compound give which allowed over a lost second or more of wheel spin. Thus a car rated at 14.9 quarter mile times would be rated in the 13 second range with todays tires. I had a 383 Ply RR back in the day and the wheels would spin for 10 feet before locking up.
Saw one of these for sale at a consignment place. Was all original, numbers matching. They wanted $75,000 for it. If I was rich, that car would be in my garage right now.
@FlushieJohnson i bought one and own one right now and i payed $50,000 and had to only sped $5000 to fix the body and do a nice painjob and finish just like this one and next week im taking it on the autobahn :)
Buick's have always been better cars. I have a roadmaster that weighs two and a half tons and came stock with an LT1 corvette engine. I hardly did any tweaking and I've never lost a race. Except to a brand new GT500 Mustang, but that doesn't count. Cost so much more than my car. Plus no one touches Buick's when it comes to comfort.
All these idiots and one in particular on here talking about hemi being a big name. LOL....I bet that one idiot does not know why a hemi is called a hemi. C'mon chumsley....tell us it is because Chrysler has manufacturing plants in both hemispheres.
All this talk about HEMIS and the 455 Just watch nhra and what motors do you see powering top fuel and funny cars and even the chevy funny cars? HEMI... it may not be made by chrysler now but it is a chrysler design and it would look awfully silly in your buicks where as just the facts jackit would look right at home in a MOPAR,
yeah, the dragsters all use hemis today. But the first car to ever run less than 9 seconds in the 1/4 mile was powered by twin buick nailheads. The only reason that todays dragsters aren't powered by Nailheads is because Buick didn't want to build muscle cars, they wanted to build luxury cars. They just slipped up and happened to make extremely powerful engines. They even lied about the 455's power rating, said it was only rated for like 320hp when it was more like 430hp.
who diddnt lie about power ratings back then..... the copo 427 camaro was rated at 430hp and actually had well over 500hp all cars were underrated then
all Chrysler's use kieth black and other race block manufactures not even the bbc's are chevy blocks and top fuel dont use a damn distributor! and if look at the engines all of the ignition systems are on the front of the engines. but when are guys like you going to realize all the engines have their strong an weak points?
Just thought I'd add to the convo by saying that there are two of these cars in my family, one owned by my mom and the other by my dad. absolutely beautiful cars.
I think it's funny how everyone compares there cars to Hemi's . If can beat a Hemi it must be fast. Remember Hemi's are legendary for a reason they set the bar and that will never never be taken away. Even to this day.
Ahh, yes it is a hemi killer. At 550 lbs of tourqe on the stage 2 it will et a hemi up.Proven time and time again on h2h challenges!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 BWAWAWAWAAAA
Stage 1 was recorded as low as 13.3, on slippery 7 inch wide polyglas tires. Put some slicks on it, or even modern tires, and it's a low 11, high 10 second car.
LOL...bring on your Hemi and I'll put up my 455 against it any time. 9.70 139 mph in my 71 Skylark. I mean I used to spank 426 hemis's with a stock Chevelle SS 350/300. 70 GSX is the baddest stock muscle ever car from that era. Hemi....it's whats for dinner.
LOLOL Hemi is a motor for chumps. SS 350 used to just walk the dog on that big slow hunk of junk. 340?? LOL yeah sure. Guy had one here back when I had that same Chevelle and I offered to run him with one of my plug wires off and he would not even take it. He knew the deal. Once you beat all the big mouths with the same car your so called competition gets skeerd with their litte mopar junk.
NO but I did run that 70 Chevelle 350 SS many times on the strip and it ran from a 13.44 to a 13.52 consistently. I guess the Hemis must have used low octane gas when I just obliterated them. I do not need to read magazines to figure out 1/4 mile times. LOL
Shut up dude. You are such a limp one. How about you get you a Hemi first and I will line up any of my 350's and see what happens, lip boy. Now unless you have a Hemi that you want to lose then quit soiling me with your useless comments. Quit talking about mags, asking questions and just bring it instead of singing it. I got the goods....do you? Chuckles.
They ran 13.8s with undersized old polyglass (I believe polyglass). I have seen GS 455's do the 1/4 in 12.2 with regular radial tires that couldn't of been wider than 275 or 285. The hemi killer would easily beat your GT. Go to track night and see for yourself.
i'm not an expert (but my dad is haha) but the gsx was pretty much just a gs 455. They started making the gsx in 1970 and instead of calling it a gs 455 they just called it a gsx. I would assume it is more powerful because of the extra 55 cubic inches over the gs 400 and the extra 105 cubic inches over the gs 350 which where both made right before the gsx in 1968 and 69. hope that helps haha.
I believe the GSX has a more sportier suspension. The GS and Skylarks have a more luxury car suspension. The GSX also has the Buick 455, and not all GS's have the big block, but some do. The appearance package is different too. You could only buy the GSX in Saturn Yellow or Apollo White.
The Zl1 Corvette Stingray from 69´ can beat MoPars, i mean look, fiberglas body + all-aluminium engine with over 550 bhp with over 12.0:1 comp(more i guess, i dunno), with slicks it turned 11s i think, or faster, depends on the driver and some other stuff, but again, that's a serious beast fully capable of beating most street Hemi cars. To bad there was only 2 made though, but it's one of few with the GSX ST1-3 and Chevelle 454 and some others capable of beating Hemi MoPars.
Well it (can)beat the street hemi stock vs stock, but the race hemi, i dunno.
Maybe an race prepped ZL1 equipped Nova 68-69- build in the same way as the Hemi darts, fiberglass parts, no back seats, fiberglass hood, no unnecessary items but those needed e.t.c, maybe that can give the dart a match perhaps?
Well, yes it's pretty much an racing engine, but if you compare it's heads to the race hemis, it's probubly not as good flowing, still, it's an damn great engine, the 455 to.
But the absolutely most powerfull engine from the 60s, have to be the 427 SOHC ''The Cammer'', 657 bhp at 7500 @ Rpm with 550 foot pounds of torque, the engine that could have stolen the hemis throne, if they had continued it.
I think Nascar banning the SOHCs was pretty much the nail in the coffin for them. Did you see last months Hot Rod ? They had a complete 427 SOHC motor built from reproduction parts !
Sorry i don't have that magazine available at where i lives :(
But i'd like to own one, that's for sure, and putting it inside an AC Cobra, but i dunno if i would dare to drive it IF it would be possible to put it inside one.
And yes they were banned since Chrysler complained, Gm threathen to boycott NASCAR and because of the rule of 500 engines to be sold to public, so it was banned from NASCAR and went instead to Dragracing where it was highly successfull.
Ford came out with their 427 SOHC for NASCAR. Chrysler did not want to be in the shadow, so they developed a 1964 426 race Hemi prototype with 4 valves per cylinder and DOHC. But the OHC design was regulated out of NASCAR before they were able to release the design, so the 426 DOHC Hemi never became production.
you are absolutley right, but the cammer is a special engine, not a regular production motor, so thats why i compared it to the DOHC hemi, even tough only 4 were built!
Awsome engine, but in Nascar, Chrsyler was king!
anyone heard of the A444 441 Cubic inch Chrysler Hemi Btw?
Fastest of the GM musclecars with mega motors of the '70s (454-455). Designed to be quick in street trim with streetable axle ratios and torque converter. Only way an LS-6 Chevelle would beat it was with a 4 speed and 4 series gears in the ass.
Sorry bud, you dont know didley about BUICKS never mind 455 stage1 GSX. Yes a true HEMI KILLER. Your gonna need a bigger HEMI espcially in a "B" body. An "A" body you would stand a chance againt a GS or GSX .Back in the 70s these were doing 13's straight from the show room floor. You'd be lucky to get a full steel body B body into the 11s EVEN WHEN HEAVILY MODIFIED.
GSX Hemi Killer? It can beat some not all depends on what its in. It could beat a later model B Body Hemi and other Mopars. It couldn't beat a 69 440-6 Roadrunner or Bee. Early B bodies 62-63 413 or 426 max wedges, 64-67 Hemis (especially Race Hemis). A bodies would be hurst hemi darts and Barracudas 10.30 of show room floor but a 340 mild built can show ya up. E bodies hemis and 440-6 are a good match but they tend to have hookin up problems. Mopar there is alot of different posions to pick.
Most are heavy But the 1969 1/2 440-6 pack roadrunner was the exception it was a bare bones factory superstock prepped car most came with rubber floor mats some without heaters too it was all business. They were stock for stock the fastest musclecar. they ran mid 12's.
A Charger would be the least of this Buick's worries. With that stage 1 455 cranking out 430 horses and 510 ft-lbs from the factory, its very underated. Buick had to stop making these because they were drawing the hot rod crowd instead of the luxury car crowd. Same thing happened in the 80s with the turbo regal. The GSX was literally the most powerful stock car that you could drive off a showroom floor at the time.
The GSX was a cool and powerful car. Is it the most power motor of the time no Thats the 426 Hemi. The Detuned street Hemi was underrated too 425 hp and 490 ft lbs. It makes around 100 hp more then advertised others put that much more. What made the GSX good it was a torque monster great bottom end, Street hemi doesn't have good bottom end. It can hardly breathe. It was a race motor thats really too tempermently for the street. The 440-6 is a better choice for the street.
not largest tq either cadillac 472 had 525 tq and the 500 had even more than that.

If it were a barebones coupe like the rest of those cars it would have wiped the face of the earth with them.
DONDIVA1969 10 months ago
@5191keith lol sorry but i disagree, when they do the factory runs, the gsx was faster than any other car, the only other car that came close was the Chevelle
Buick70GSX 10 months ago
@Buick70GSX i agree. i have had so many fights with people who refuse to read facts. they love to quote high hp numbers but at the same time the 455 had the torque and lighter weight block . And as it has been seen , you can build a monster 455 with high hp. i really don't know what the fuss is, the 455 has already proven it can run with just about anything.

GS Stage 1 would give a Hemi powered anything all it could handle on the street.

the only thing this needs to bring it up to the 21st century is to have the original wheels steel banded a couple of inches to fill it out a bit ,and maybe lower the car about two inches ,and leave it at that...minimalist work to get the maximum effect!

My favourite car! l first saw it in a game called ''Driver'' and l really loved it! :D
MrGeo7k 11 months ago
@MrGeo7k - Same here, I actually thought it was a Chevy Chevelle SS for a long time, because I was just a kid when that game was coming out (I think it was 1996 or so) and I didn't know much about muscle cars back then, especially since you never see them anywhere on the streets over here (Germany). A couple of years later when internet access became more available, I looked up everything and have been dreaming of driving one of these across the US eversince. One day... one day.
schlafanzyk 11 months ago
@schlafanzyk Driver actually came out in 1998,and the 2 first games are some of my favourite. When l saw the replay in the Demo (the final release of Driver didn't include this car) l really loved it and wanted to drive it.l hope one day l'll drive it atleast once! :D
MrGeo7k 11 months ago
@MrGeo7k Right, 1996 was Destruction Derby 2, which was my favorite game before that. It's almost sad that a videogame is pretty much the closest you will ever get to one of these in Europe. With the fuel and insurance costs pretty much twice as high, you just can't afford driving one of those muscle cars here.
schlafanzyk 11 months ago
@schlafanzyk Unfortunately, yes, you're right.l haven't even seen one of those awesome muscle cars in real life yet. :( Destruction Derby series rocked on PlayStation 1 (l still play on my PS1 lol!),l don't know about PS2.Actually,both Driver and Desruction Derby series were made by the same company (Reflections, now known as Ubisoft Reflections l think).l love those games to death! :D

@5191keith Hey Keith, part 3 and 4 of your comments were removed. Will you continue.
csx999 1 year ago
@5191keith ----- Continued from above --- Just because a car had a Hemi, 440, 454, 428 or 455 there is no guarantee that and will be faster than all others because of factory tuning being inconsistent. Take all the muscle cars and equipped them with say a 4.10 gear, positive traction with similar tires and same test driver for all. In theory the advantage will go to the Hemi, LS6 454 over all the others because they came with better heads, camshafts and carburetors. continue part 3 follows
5191keith 1 year ago
@5191keith Exactly. Some cars had their power down low, some high end. It's all in the breathing with factory. mods you have mentioned. The Buick might take the quarter on these cars but i will bet on the LS6 and the HEMI for anything after that. the Buick's torque is its advantage(510FT/LBS). All being said , the GS/GSX becomes a raging maniac with open headers. Although i love Mopars, i'll take a GSX over all of them with exception of th'69 Dodge Charger 440/HEMI.
csx999 1 year ago
@5191keith i'm basing it on all things considered equal, no ringers, equal talent, etc. or the same driver running a quarter mile, one at a time, with both cars. i agree with driver part when racing against one another. give me a mid sixties nova ss with the 327. if i get out earlier, it will take that big block up to 90mph to finally catch me.
csx999 1 year ago
yeah what he said and not a hemi killer fast with class yes
The572blownhemi 1 year ago

@machone7I Where the hell do you get your numbers from?????700 ft lbs of torque my ass it is 510 lbs of torque. If you dont know dont say ridiculous things.
camirocz 1 year ago
@camirocz i got the data from a classic car magazine that is written in spanish. and it wasnt clear in wich units they said that, plus ive got to translate it to english. because there are all those different units you have to translate from european units to american or english, and also you have to translate the language.and anyway could you tell in wich units its the buick GS's torque written in?
machone7I 1 year ago
@machone7I everyone knows its 510 lbs ft of torque :)
worldtravel101 1 year ago
@worldtravel101 well, in a classic car magazine they wrote about six hundred seventy something in i dont remember wich units. or probably i got confused about the car. maybe it wasnt a random GSX it could be a more powerful version. what i know, is that if it was around 675 x units of torque. and in the same article they compared it to an actual porshe, with around 290 x torque units and a ferrari with thre hundred something units, and that makes the car a beast. being that the about 40 yearsago
machone7I 1 year ago
@machone7I
those "x units" were Newton metres
691Nm = 510lb-ft
bastardeyez 1 year ago
@bastardeyez That gets it right... I had read the report in my native language, so i dind't know how to translate it... That proves everything, More or less 700 nm and 510 lb-ft.
Thanks for the correction ^^

they always want twice as much as the highest price in the price guides at these classic car shops. In excellent condition, that car is worth about $30-35K, not 75K. Same with the 56 chevy. The guy wanted $80K because it had an original A/C, its worth half that.

LT1HILLINGHOE 2 years ago
No its called "hemi" because of hemispherical combustion chambers. Pontiac almost came out with their own Hemi back in the late 60's early 70's.

HEMI... it may not be made by chrysler now but it is a chrysler design and it would look awfully silly in your buicks where as just the facts jackit would look right at home in a MOPAR,
ugslamma 2 years ago
yeah, the dragsters all use hemis today.
FlushieJohnson 2 years ago
who diddnt lie about power ratings back then..... the copo 427 camaro was rated at 430hp and actually had well over 500hp all cars were underrated then

NO but I did run that 70 Chevelle 350 SS many times on the strip and it ran from a 13.44 to a 13.52 consistently. I guess the Hemis must have used low octane gas when I just obliterated them. I do not need to read magazines to figure out 1/4 mile times. LOL

They ran 13.8s with undersized old polyglass (I believe polyglass). I have seen GS 455's do the 1/4 in 12.2 with regular radial tires that couldn't of been wider than 275 or 285. The hemi killer would easily beat your GT. Go to track night and see for yourself.

Maube you guys can tell me....What is the difference between a GS and a GSX? Is a GSX more powerful?
SkylarkStudios 2 years ago
i'm not an expert (but my dad is haha) but the gsx was pretty much just a gs 455. They started making the gsx in 1970 and instead of calling it a gs 455 they just called it a gsx. I would assume it is more powerful because of the extra 55 cubic inches over the gs 400 and the extra 105 cubic inches over the gs 350 which where both made right before the gsx in 1968 and 69. hope that helps haha.
snowman4839 2 years ago
I'm sorry I need to correct myself, I believe the gsx was a SPECIAL EDITION gs 455 because they do have just normal gs 455's.
snowman4839 2 years ago

Eddiemotor 2 years ago
Put a ZL1 up against a Super Stock Hemi dart then.
3deadlegs 2 years ago
Well it (can)beat the street hemi stock vs stock, but the race hemi, i dunno.
Maybe an race prepped ZL1 equipped Nova 68-69- build in the same way as the Hemi darts, fiberglass parts, no back seats, fiberglass hood, no unnecessary items but those needed e.t.c, maybe that can give the dart a match perhaps?
Eddiemotor 2 years ago
Zl1 was pretty much a race engine, the L1s didnt even have a factory radio or a heater.
3deadlegs 2 years ago
Well, yes it's pretty much an racing engine, but if you compare it's heads to the race hemis, it's probubly not as good flowing, still, it's an damn great engine, the 455 to.
But the absolutely most powerfull engine from the 60s, have to be the 427 SOHC ''The Cammer'', 657 bhp at 7500 @ Rpm with 550 foot pounds of torque, the engine that could have stolen the hemis throne, if they had continued it.
Great engines all of them anyway.
Eddiemotor 2 years ago
I think Nascar banning the SOHCs was pretty much the nail in the coffin for them. Did you see last months Hot Rod ? They had a complete 427 SOHC motor built from reproduction parts !
3deadlegs 2 years ago
Sorry i don't have that magazine available at where i lives :(
But i'd like to own one, that's for sure, and putting it inside an AC Cobra, but i dunno if i would dare to drive it IF it would be possible to put it inside one.
And yes they were banned since Chrysler complained, Gm threathen to boycott NASCAR and because of the rule of 500 engines to be sold to public, so it was banned from NASCAR and went instead to Dragracing where it was highly successfull.

what about the DOHC Hemi?
778 horsepowers blew everything away
MannePalmqvisst 2 years ago
A925
Ford came out with their 427 SOHC for NASCAR. Chrysler did not want to be in the shadow, so they developed a 1964 426 race Hemi prototype with 4 valves per cylinder and DOHC. But the OHC design was regulated out of NASCAR before they were able to release the design, so the 426 DOHC Hemi never became production.
junit483 2 years ago
you are absolutley right, but the cammer is a special engine, not a regular production motor, so thats why i compared it to the DOHC hemi, even tough only 4 were built!
Awsome engine, but in Nascar, Chrsyler was king!

You'd be lucky to get a full steel body B body into the 11s EVEN WHEN HEAVILY MODIFIED.
jasonv8 2 years ago 3
GSX Hemi Killer? It can beat some not all depends on what its in. It could beat a later model B Body Hemi and other Mopars. It couldn't beat a 69 440-6 Roadrunner or Bee. Early B bodies 62-63 413 or 426 max wedges, 64-67 Hemis (especially Race Hemis). A bodies would be hurst hemi darts and Barracudas 10.30 of show room floor but a 340 mild built can show ya up. E bodies hemis and 440-6 are a good match but they tend to have hookin up problems. Mopar there is alot of different posions to pick.
sspat1976 2 years ago
You are wrong this GS beats Roadrunner. Roadrunner was just too heavy
impalaccc 2 years ago
Most are heavy But the 1969 1/2 440-6 pack roadrunner was the exception it was a bare bones factory superstock prepped car most came with rubber floor mats some without heaters too it was all business. They were stock for stock the fastest musclecar. they ran mid 12's.
sspat1976 2 years ago
