@IsadoreIndigo Petty made a cool story out of it but I think he actually he famously broke his hand a couple of years after "The Waiting" had been released. The song was released in about 1980 or 1981 and he broke his hand while recording Southern Accents which was recorded in 1984.

This was from the hard promises album. Written WAY before his injury. He punched a wall because he was pissed about the mix of "Rebels" from the southern Accents album.

He suggests it in this video as the song he came back to while 'waiting' forever for his hand to heal. And he made a similar suggestion that the song was (or had come to be) about his guitar on tour in '87, when referencing how arsonists had burned his home but failed to get the Rickenbacker. He then breaks in to the opening. PS Promises only 4 years before SA.
