I don`t like Beijing on the way to a big modern city. I miss Beijing 10 years ago,there were not a lot of people.I like the old house, the most of them are already destroyed for modern house ,or they build some fake" old house". Beijing was very clear and quiet.We lived a very simple and peaceful life.just sad

@blunklaura It's not until recently maybe 2000+ that china has started to celebrate holidays here in the US/Canada. As China becomes more and more like the west, (brand name clothes,food and accessories).

In China, older couples don't feel its necessary to really celebrate, usually only for birthdays or anniversaries would they usually feel the need to go out for dinner or something.

The old man with his old wife made a good point and it was kinda of rude to keep insisting that they follow the western tradition of buying flowers and whatnot for their loved ones. there may be a really good reason why people might choose not to follow certain traditions especially ones steeped in consumerism especially when they may be very poor.
