Families who owed someone, and could not pay, would often times have a member of that family who would go and work for the one they owed. This usually was only for a few years, but sometimes it would last a lifetime. People who were cruel to their slaves were ones who didn't follow God, such as the Pharaoh Moses had to deal with.
