This festival will be set on every full moon day in November

Position is near Mae Jo University, 20 km. north from Chiangmai downtown.

Don't worry, civil aviation authority would clear the sky especially for this. All flight to/from CNX will be postponed.

And surprisingly, there's almost no fire accident from these lanterns reported. 'Coz if you do it right, the fire will put out in the sky, no more harm when they land.

Currently living in Singburi, and because we have a big river and a small town, these are a big hit during Loy Kratong. It's beautiful to look up in the air and see hundreds of these lanterns floating silently up into the night.

I live in Chiang Mai. This is Loy Kratong in November. These lanterns are really a N.Thailand (Lanna) tradition but now it has spread across the country.This is once a year but they do let them off on western new year now as well.They are sky lanterns made from bamboo and rice paper, light the wax fuel cell then let them drift into the air, they go to 1000's ft. Some also have fireworks on the underside of the lantern.The bit at the end of video is one of the fireworks attached has fallen off.

The fuel used for those laterns is pure wax that evaporates when burned. So.. Sorry mate..

What the heck are you talking about? They lift in the air because the vax burns up and evaporates into hot gases which has lower density than cold air. Which makes it lift.

That's actually not burning oil falling down, it's the sparks from a firework attached to the lantern.

They use tissue paper put in melted candle wax ,leave it dry and use it as a fuel to make a hot air lantern.

The lantern is made with sa paper which is locally made in Chiang Mai.

Chiang Mai was a capital of Lanna kingdom around 700 years ago before become a part of Thailand now a day. So, their culture is quite different from other part of Thailand.
