Right behind the firing of Tom Landry as the most classless act was Jones' stupidity at letting his ego get in the way and firing Jimmy Johnson! 2 super bowls and a third IN A ROW there just for the taking!! Lived in Dallas at the time and I recall how stunning it was to wake up and find out the architect of "last to first" and 2 Super Bowls in a row with a sure third one to make history was gone! Under the word "fool" in the dictionary you will find Jerry Jones' name!
I live in Boston, & am sick of hearing about Bill Billechick being the "greatest coach" ever Tom Landry is the greatest ....also fuck faggot Tom Brady, & the Foxboro Fuck-ups! Cowboys baby! America's Team!
I grew up in the 1970 s and I was a Dallas Cowboy fan for years. I remember the day ashole Jerry Jones leaked to the media that TOM LANDRY was being let go. I will never forget that . Tom Landry deserved much more respect than he was given. I stopped being a Cowboy fan after what Jones did.
@phredmizzle DEFINITELY....the old school Cowboys were great (in the top 3 of the great 70's team along with the Steelers and Dolphins) however, they were SOOO close to being THE greatest ever ..if they win SB III and beat the Steelers in 78 (not to mention the 81 NFC Championship ) the Steelers and Niners are great BUT they both had to go through Dallas too win at least two of their SB's respectively..but yeah a movie about the 70's/early 80's Boys would be awesome .
As a Niners fan,I can't stand the Cowboys, but man, Landry was such a class act, innovator, and icon. Staubach was one of the best quarterbacks the NFL has seen. It's amazing, Coach Landry had 20 consecutive winning seasons. That will never happen again.
@HazMatCFO I finally let that firing go last year & no longer root for my home town Patriots & am DAMN PROUD to return to my roots as a Cowboys fan! this vid gets me going I fuckin love Coach Landry!

Landry is rotting away with maggots eating his brain...oh wait a minute,he did not have a brain, that's why he managed to lose with all the talent he had around him
vince lombardi, and co. were all great coaches but there were NONE better than this man...its too bad the franchise treated him so unceremoniously when they fired him, which shamed the dallas "convicts" forever, but when tom had this team they indeed were like he was--the greatest ever...RIP Mr. landry, you'll be forever missed...
Tom Landry took an expansion team in 1960, and made it into one of the most recognizable, popular, and successful teams in all of sports. Two Super Bowl rings doesnt even begin to tell the story of those 28 years of success and consistency.
* 20 straight winning seasons (... just think about that for a second )
** 37 Playoff games
** 13 Division Titles
** 12 NFC Title games
** 5 NFC Conference Titles
** 2 World Titles
( the 3 Super Bowl losses were by a combined total of 11 points )
@playmayker88 2 of the superbowl losses cowboys suffered were to a great Steelers team. Those Cowboy teams with Staubach and Landry could take anyone now, including the Saints and Colts.
Oh, how can cowboy fans remember that dropped pass. The Steelers were up 35-17 that game and put it in cruise control and ended up needing to miraculously recover the last onside kick by the cowboys. If Smith had caught that pass, the Steelers would have played with high intensity the whole game. If the Cowboys had a great blocking fullback like Darryl "Moose" Johnson at that time, they probably would have won more superbowls and be team of the 70's.
and if he had caught that pass..think of the spike in Cowboys intensity..
Pittsburgh was not dominating Dallas in that game. They got 2 easy TD's on a couple of blown coverages.
And they didnt need Moose, they had a pure RB who was dynamic and dangerous at any point on the field. Their array of weapons compensated for any lack in HOF FB presence. Even without Moose, Dorsett was carving them up everytime he touched the ball.
the bottom line is, that cowboy team, and the one that dominated denver in the previous years in superbowl XII were probably the best in cowboys history, certainly far better than this years boys.
Tom Landry was the Cowboys. Between Captain America and Coach Landry the Cowboys embodied everything that was right in sports. Coach it is unlikely that there will ever be anyone like you again. You were class personified and a master tactician. Thank you for all the great memories!
Actually, Landry was getting fired as early as AT LEAST 2 years before Jones bought the team. In fact, following a loss to the Falcons in 1987, Bum Bright (the owner prior to Jones) not only blasted Landry's playcalling through the media, but he also said that the only person in the organization who knew what he was doing was Tex Schramm. 3-13 in 1988 meant Landry's firing was imminent, regardless of who bought the team after it was put for sale.
I also want to add that one year after selling the team to Jones, Bum Bright has stated that his biggest regret was not firing Landry, himself. Bright also revealed that he attempted to talk Tex Schramm into firing Landry at the end of the 1987 season, but Schramm refused, claiming that he didn't have a replacement ready.
I'd also like to add that Landry recruited the key elements of Jerry Jones' Super Bowl Team.
I'd also like to add that the Dallas Cowboys would not have had the success or the legacy they have now, without the football genius that was Tom Landry.
@playmayker88 The ofensive line that won the superbowls were drafted by Landry, Mark Tuinei, Nate Newton, and Kevin Gogan, were drafted by Tom Landry as well as Michael Irvin, Ken norton Junior, Chad Hennings, Ji Jeffcoat, among others.......
@SuperDroogie187 Bum Bright was bitter at Landry because Landry had no use for him and didnt have a close relationship as he did with the original owner Clint Muchinson.
In a 30 year span, you have to expect some decline in talent and productivity at some point. Having 20 straight winning seasons says enough in itself. And taking a poor 1985 team to a division title says volumes of Landry's ability as a coach. He was not done. He was poised to take Dallas back to prominence.
Correction I despise Jones' Cowboys. Respected Landry's even tho they rival my Skin's. How can you not respect that organization? Thanks for the classic and classy rivalries RIP
hey it was a dirty deed that jerry jones did to tom landry how he fired him as soon as he bought the team and did not let him know about after he hired jimmy johnson.which i do not hold any grudge against johnson but i feel jerry jones is long over due to apoligize to landry's family on how he did landry.

Yeah, If he stayed on longer, he could have had another amazing dynasty. You deserve those superbowl wins Landry, you made america's team what it is today. RIP
I love Tom Landry, but he wouldn't have built the Cowboy dynasty of the 90's. That was all Jimmy Johnson. He had the guts to pull off the Tony Dorsett trade; and JJ is what made me a Cowboys fan despite growing up in NY.
Of course Landry was better than JJ. But I just don't think Landry would have been able to build a new Cowboys dynasty by the time he was forced into retirement. Landry was one of the greatest coaches in the history of sport, but he just started to lose it towards the end. It happens.
IF he wasn't as old as he was when JJ came around, no doubt in my mind he could have built another dynasty, Tom made no name players into legends/stars. He could do it again.
@shabeki The Tony Dorsett trade? dont you mean Herschel Walker? Having said that, Herschel was available to JJ and JJ to make that trade only because of the Landry era aquisition of Walker. Also note the other players that Landry turned over to Jimmy and Jerry to help them win super bowls - Irvin, Teuini, Gogan, Newton, you can say Aikman since Landry was poised to take him 1st pick.. So to say the Game was passing LAndry by is ridiculous and unfounded.
thanks for that , he was the coach of my fav team from age 7 till about 15 thought he was a permanent fixture on the cowboys sideline still not the same looking over there and not seeing the hats, and he drafted irvin, was scoutin aikman so was on his way to building another dynasty would've liked to have seen it.

They were great Steeler teams. But I dont think they were superiror to those Cowboys by any means.
Remember Dorsett running all over them in the first quarter? He had 60 yards before midway 2nd quarter, but Dallas got away from the run.
And the missed TD pass by Jackie Smith.
