  • I had never heard of this but saw a clip of it in a youtube poop and could tell right away this was Don Bluth XD

  • the final don bluth film i need to see ive seen all the other when i was a kid or on youtube

  • Just finished reading about this in Dorse Lanpher's book. He left Disney to join Bluth and a group of others, initially to do this 'toon. The Bluth group had integrity and did some wonderful things. I'm curious, though, as to how Disney figures in the distribution of this. (See Wikipedia, box on right side.) Dorse and I attended the same high school, but he was a few years ahead of me. I did not get to know him until recently. The day after his book arrived, I learned that he had passed.

  • the DVD is only a zone 1 and i need a zone 2 :( but anyway i've watched it here haha thanks to Mrcharrio

  • if only i could find that film on DVD

  • @Fandelevangle It's already on DVD 3 years ago, I'm not sure if it's not out of print, but I'm sure it's available on Amazon and stuff. Also it released on the same time as the Iphone game.

  • A good time in Salt Lake City? Isn't that essentially the LDS church headquarters?

  • Banjo sounds like Fievel

  • Don Bluth Productions An American Tail Banjo the Woodpile Cat Rock A Doodle Small One Titan AE Anastasia Secret of Nimh Pete's Dragon Robin Hood Rescuers
  • Wow! The singer is singing and narrating at the same time. That's rare!

  • Bluth left Disney because he felt Disney movies had lost their charm. He's definitely made this little flick charming.

  • Banjo kinda looks like Oliver from Oliver and Company, doesn't he?

  • Aww Banjo's so cute! <3

  • "Mommy! Mommy! Banjo's chasing chickens again!"

Tattletaling must be a little sister thing!

  • The discussion about how you discipline your children legally is interesting. It's like Tracy J Butler said in her comic, Lackadaisy: what's lawful doesn't always coincide with what's right. If my children ever caused trouble for me or anybody else that does not deserve it: I would smack them, no doubt about it and screw anybody who calls it child abuse when they have respect for people around them and don't have criminal records.

  • OMG I FOUND IT IN ENGLISH!!!! I used to LOVE this as a kid, only the copy I had was in french when the spoke and the singing was in english. I still loved it even though I couldn't understand a thing they said. Probably because of my love of cats come to think of it :P

  • Oh my goodness...this brings back so many memories when I was little! My parents got this little movie for me and I watched it practically every day! I loved it!! Why don't they make stuff like this anymore!

  • the song for the title character is so catchy.

  • lady and the tramp 2 completely ripped this off; the only difference is that there are dogs instead of cats. i cant believe disney didn't realize that.

  • Its been so many years since I saw this, I couldnt have been but 3-5. But now everything is coming back to me, the sounds, the characters....Its all triggering a load of memories. I remember that this use to be one of my absolute favorites as a small child.

  • @OverlordSpectre

Same here, my friend... Same here.

  • My parents spanked me all the time, and I turned out just fine.

*drinks from skull and fires gun into the air*

Seriously though, sometimes just talking doesn't cut it. I see so many kids come into the store where I work, running around, screaming, knocking things over and throwing stuff, and the parents don't so much as raise their voices to them. I don't have kids, but if I did I'd be embarrassed to have them behave in such a way.

  • The great thing about Bluth's animation is that you can always tell it's his. Everything is animated with wonderful color and attention to detail.

  • @Reycied i like the fact that don bluth treats his films like a work of out instead of cartoon

  • 8:15 - obviously were disney came up with oliver and company...

  • i love don bluth's animation! look at 7:08 does anyone else remember "a troll in central park?" for some reason 7:08 reminds me how that troll just bounced around so much xD

  • you know what?

what Don Bluth is really good at?

    animating animals.

coincidentaly, most of his movies that features animals are good!

except for the Pebble and the penguin and Rock a doodle.

  • Don Bluth is my #1 inspiration when it comes to art! I love his creations. They are adorable!

  • we love 2d animation i wish i was a cartoonist , but im still in college for 2 years course.

  • Man, if Salt Lake City freaks Banjo out, I'd hate to see how he would react to the rest of the world (trust me, I've been to SLC and its pretty tame compared to all the places I've been to).

  • reminds me of the aristocats

  • My parents "spanked" me until I was black and blue. It used to not be that bad, but if you give a parent an inch they'll take a mile. You should never hit a child, this creates hard feelings on their part which can escalate into further bad behaviour. I heard the best thing to do is take away their technology or just simply talk. You never want to let it go so far that you strike your child...it never worked for me. It made me very angry for a long time, even when it wasn't a very bad spanking.

  • Set 33 years before the red balloon exsisted

  • The world has gone too soft, that's why now every kind of physical dicaplen may seem like abuse. this leads to parents trying to be friends with their kids and nagotiat with them to behave. and many kids don't listen because they don't know that if i do something wrong i'll get an ass wooping. in my opinon giving a child an ass wooping is fine when the kid does something to deserve it like contiues outburst in the middle of the mall, and other actions to show the parent has no control.

  • @Chibigaaralover Agreed. I was spanked as a kid, and I'm no criminal, I'm not even anti-social.

  • The kittens look a lot like the kittens in Ariostcats. I wonder if the same artist did this show too. :) (Forgive the poor spelling please.)

  • 9:57 oh god he's so cute i just wanna pick him up and keep him!!! T^T

  • @animeforever63 Hmm. Well then maybe that says it all?

  • i love this, used to watch it when i was little :)

  • The two sisters look almost identical to the mice in Secret of Nimh (Mrs. Frisby's kids), except with pointy ears and fluffy tails.

  • Awesome! Don Bluth!

  • MOMMY MOMMY BANJOS CHASING CHICKENS AGAIN!!!

  • Banjo reminds me of my little kitten, its not that she's a bad kitty she just gets into trouble.

  • POOR LITTLE GUY.

  • THE ONLY FILM I KNOW OF that was done on low budget wherein (A) the animation is better than the layout and backgrounds and wherin (B) the little girl characters have much much less annoying voices than the human cameos...

11:12 - i wish youtube had a 'slow' command, i wanna study how they did the effects!

  • THE ONLY FILM I KNOW OF that was done on low budget wherein (A) the animation is better than the layout and backgrounds and wherin (B) the little girl characters have much much less annoying voices than the human cameos...

  • 07:22 Damn, who would have thought a little kitten could cause a pileup to make the Blues Brothers green with envy ?

  • So that cat can't handle Salt Lake City? Thats one of the tamest places in America; I'd hate to see him out in the rest of the world.

  • Something definately got lost between this and Rock-A-Doodle-Doo.

Still not sure what that is...

  • We don't spank out kids, it's child abuse and it's not right, no matter what the kids do these days, we DON'T spank our kids, spanking kids was out lawed decades ago.

  • @Animeforever61 And people wonder why kids are the way they are these days. They didn't outlaw it. They outlawed beating your kids. Not spanking them. People always lump spanking in with beating and abuse, when they are VERY DIFFERENT from each other. Jeez.

  • @SoulShelter But still, I think it's wrong.

  • @Animeforever61 HAHAHA, your children are spoiled. xD

  • @abi21891 I don't have kids.

  • @Animeforever61 What gives you the right to say how parents should disipline their children when you have no kids yourself?

  • @killanimalsforfun247 It's a long story, I may not have kids of my own but I've heard of a lot of parents abuse their own kids by spanking them when their kids didn't do anything or when they don't deserve to be spanked. Now spanking is considered child abuse by law or that it's not allowed, at least it's what I've heard.

The point to it all is that spanking kids is abusive now and some kids are being spanked when they have done nothing to deserve it. I find that wrong.

  • @Animeforever61 A law against spanking would see a lot of families split up, parents going to jail and children put in care homes. Sounds like some kind of nighmare Soviet system. You have to look at each case individualy, a slapped ass is not a fist to the face.

  • @killanimalsforfun247 Well, I'll admit, some kids might get spanked for a reason, I knew several of kids that behaved like bullies at school when I was a kid and I think if they wouldn't stop being so evil, than only than would the parent be allowed to spank them, but not so hard, more like a light tap and not a swift hit. But still, I think spanking kids is wrong but I guess there are very few kids that deserve it. Okay, what I said does sound like a nightmare. So you and I are half right.

  • OMG. Memories!!

  • Thank you so much for uploading this!

  • "I don't even have britches."

  • It's basically American Tail lite :)

  • duuuude soo long since i've seen this!!!!!

  • I can see kids watching this nowadays and thinking, "Why does his dad want a light switch?"

  • @Hethrin Well I'm not exactly a kid, but its still before my time. What does this mean?

  • @GilmoreGirlsAddict Means he's getting a spanking ;)

  • @Hethrin Oh thank you!

  • Man, I know that feeling when mom or dad tells ya to get a switch.

  • Wow. Redneck all the way huh? Maybe that's why I remember this so fondly from being a kid. I could relate to it.

  • Ahh Love Banjo the Woodpile Cat i remember saw :) i was young 5

  • Why does this look so familiar...?

You can always tell a Don Bluth animation from the facial expressions, especially when the get sad, and when they lick their lips haha

  • wow i have never seen this its so cute

  • Some animation is looked to The Jungle Book.

  • I oughta take back a 2 X 4 and let him hit me with it! I always loved that when I was a kid.

  • at 1:17 that's ducky's sream

  • OMG I KNEW THIS WAS REAL! for awhile i thought i only dreamed but I KNEW IT! i knew it was real XD thanks for uploading

  • 3:11 to 3:20 K...Britches? Really? LOL. Cats don't wear britches. Then, a switch? How would a cat use a switch, anyway? I get the whole point of what they're trying to get across, but I'm just saying. They couldn't have found another way to convey Banjo's punishment-something more cat-related?

  • @teardropwolf2 I'd be more concerned about the fact that cats can apparently run nightclubs. XD

  • *bawls* Gah Banjo crying gave me tooth decay from all the sugary cuteness

  • I wish the movie was longer.

  • he always has his tongue hangin out or his mouth open or even both :@

  • Don Bluth can give you cavities with cuteness if he wants to.

God, I wish 2-D animation was made more nowadays! :(

  • @smokingtofu I know this is late to say, but I feel you on both statements. Don Bluth in his early prime (the 80's), to me, was just as good as Studio Ghibli. I feel bad for him when it came to the 90's (a rough time for anyone who wasn't in Disney), because he did some pretty awful films (especially "A Troll in Central Park"), but I hear that he might do a comeback soon, so maybe we'll get to see some of his old 2-D magic come to the big screen. :D "Never say 'Never'" right?

  • @Violenteers What's the switch Banjo is suppose to be looking for? Also I think I spotted a glitch in the animation. He's walking around in a under a building and then jumps on a branch in sunlight. What exactly happenend there?

  • @Thomasmemoryscentral He's supposed to be getting a skinny tree branch to have the dad whip him with. Also, that's not a glitch, it's called a "jump cut," where it goes from one scene to another as a way to show time's moving on. It's a movie techinque used a lot in movies, especially short films.

  • @smokingtofu well that's life, we don't use swords anymore now we use guns

  • Banjo bears a strong resemblance to Figaro from Pinocchio.

  • ahahaa tht dogs called cleo like my dog :)

  • Don Bluth never fails to make great films. :)

  • fore some reason does this movie reminds me of Dons other movie

    The searcret of Nimh.

  • "You have exactly one minute to fetch me a switch."

    I was like DAAAAAMN!

  • Always thought his dad looked like a beaver, and his sisters like rats, aha.

  • I love how their mouths are animated! xD *stares*

  • wow it seems like oilver and company copied alot of things srom this movie but this movie reminds me of the aristocats ?????????

  • I wonder how many people were impressed back in 1979 to see an animated TV special with very high-quality animation instead of the usual Hanna-Barbera/DePatie-Freleng/Filmation stuff?

  • I like the Don Bluth animation.

  • I don't think he looks anything like a cat :/

  • @animeluver01 who?

  • I remember this...! I used to always hum the themesong to myself, when I was a kid, haha. ^^;

  • this looks or seems a lot like the Aristrocats :P this is very good i've never heard of it :)

  • these are some ugly ass cats! but a great story :3

  • Don Bluth and Gary Goldman a talented team.

  • i love how don bluth can take two things and make it the exact opposite of each other

Take the cats for example- in this the cats are adorable and sweet but in American Tail all the cats (besides Tiger) are the f*kin devil!!!!!!! they gave me nightmares for about two weeks the first time I watched that movie lol

  • @KenzieKaddl Don't forget Dragon from The Secret of NIMH

  • @dmc97ingc Oh my gosh, Dragon was a hell demon!

  • "Good times?" This is Salt Lake City he's talking about, right?

  • @glaringman Ha Ha, I've been there before, I liked it.

  • @glaringman

    well said

  • It's funny, I just came back from watching Felidae and now I'm expecting blood and guts to show up at any moment xD

  • @CloudFlowers XDDD i know exactly what you mean, but i want to read the book to the Felidae movie now ^^

  • @mewmewkittygirl Sweet, it should definitely be a good read :-3

  • @CloudFlowers yeah Felidae was a mind job alright, intresting story though.

  • @CloudFlowers I've come here after watching Felidae to cleanse my mind .. aww look cute kitty

  • I have been looking EVERYWHERE for this!

Thank you so much! It's such a rush of nostalgia to watch this.

  • lol. Pason Utah. Thats like what, 10 miles from where I live? Too bad Pason is all suburbia now. There are a few farms here and there, but it is mostly urban development and sprawl these days.

Anyway, the film is superb. I love Don Bluth's style. Long live quality traditional 2d animation.

  • Lol I have the game version of this on my iphone. Pretty cute.

  • you have exactly one minute to fetch me a switch...

    harsh, daddy.

  • I'm confused do they live in the woodpile or does the farmer own they?

  • both:

The farmer owns them as farm cats to take care of unwanted rodents; mice rats and such

they made their little family nook inside of woodpile, but the farmer owns the mother and father

  • Hey everybody, is this sold on DVD somewhere? I'm a major Don Bluth fan.

  • I believe it just got released on a special DVD.

  • @AstralDragoon

according to his website it is... I don't know where?

  • Aww! How cute!

  • Eesh...

  • @M16DARKSHINNE43 Huh!?

  • Aw... Child/kitten abuse... ;_; How exactly does a cat use a switch, anyways? xD

  • idk....

  • @littlekitsune1

lol, its not child abuse. Parents should spank their children if they misbehave. My parents did it all the time. Didn't yours?

  • @IMAGIMATIONanimation No. o_O We talked it out. (I couldn't tell if you were joking, or not. xD)

  • @littlekitsune1

Really? Well dang. My parents spanked us all the time. I thought it was normal lol. . . :(

  • @IMAGIMATIONanimation No, in today's day and age it's considered abuse. =( But to each parent their own, I suppose.

  • it is, it teaches disiplin, but those gvernment agencies that just have to ruin peoples lives say that it causes the child to be disfunctional, what a LOAD OF SHIT.

  • That's a REALLY big can.

  • Maybe it's a paintcan?

  • Comment removed

  • I loved this film when I was younger! This takes me back :)

  • Hehe. I wish I was as adventurous and rambunctious as Banjo when I was little.

  • reminds me of the first All Dogs Go to heaven movie, and the Secret of Nimh. lol

  • ah. the classics

  • Don Bluth really likes stories about separation from home doesn't he?

  • In case anyone wasn't aware and who's got an iPhone or iPod Touch. Banjo the Woodpile Cat can also be had as a game. It's only a quid on the App Store and well worth the fun and entertainment for anyone who loves the work of Don Bluth.

Play is similar to Space Ace or Dragon's Lair, one has to pick the appropriate directions or action to take.

  • Even though this was made in 1979... it's got that IMO gorgeous 50s looks and sound to it. A real gem.

  • @mukatuna I agree, some of the music here sounds very 60's, especially the instrumental arrangement.

  • OH SNAP!! BANJO THE WOODPILE CAT!!

    nobody knows about this~! yay!

thanks a million for the upload ;D

  • @Ellidegg I know I haven't seen this in forever, and when I heard it was a Don Bluth movie, I was like YESSSS! I love his works.

  • Look like Oliver from Oliver and Company

  • They dun really look like cats though =T

  • omg i never knew Don Bluth did this, I have this recorded (and now have no clue where the vid is) and i loved it practically to pieces, Banjo's so cute XDDD

  • Thank you so much for posting this! Been wanting to watch this, the video is so hard to find!

  • OMG always thought banjo was the cutest! X3

  • CLASSIC! Don Bluth STARTED HERE!!!!

  • Oh, he starts crying that's too much.... :(

  • This doesnt seem like something Don Bluth wud do.

  • I think a director trade mark of Don Bluth's is using sparkles in some secens and it looks great!

  • Scatman Cruthers!! WOO!

And Don Bluth before he lost his mind and made Rockadoodle...

  • i saw a bunch of the original pre-production sketches of this film today in class at scad. we got to pick them up and look through them and everything. it was cool

  • OMG what teacher? atl or Savannah SCAD? I'm gonna stalk him XD (I'm a scaddie too)

  • savannah scad. prof. powers. :P

  • How does a cat spank a kitten with a switch?

  • Instead of a half-hour of previews and commercials, why can't theaters give us a cartoon like this? I've never seen this.

  • "I should take back a 2by4 and let him hit me with it."

Oh Banjo you sad sad kitty!

  • he went to salt lake city!?...thats kinda cool cuz thats where i live...but it doesn't look anything like that haha

  • the creators used photos from eastern LA as references because it was easier than going to salt lake city

  • I've never heard of or seen this before at all. Is this by the creator of "An American Tale"?

    It's so cute and sad!

  • U bet it is. Dom Bluth directed this.

  • At times, Banjo looks like Peppermint Patty. Maybe it's his hairdo that does it.

  • He reminds me more of the little girl(Penny I think her name was, been forever since I saw it) on the first Rescuers movie. His facial features: the big eyes, the paler face with darker hair around it, etc. just made me wonder... I know Don Bluth worked on some Disney movies, did he help with The Rescuers?

  • WOW! You can find pretty much ANYTHING on YouTube I see! LOL.

  • Isn't it great?! Bad too of course since it makes you want to stay up reliving old memories. I spent the whole day a few weeks ago watching old classics I haven't seen in ages!

  • This took FOUR years to make.
