I'm so, so, so glad that I read these stories as a youngster. Every teenager needs to read these books, whether you're a thug, a nerd, a gamer, a cheerleader - you /need/ to read these books.
@quotecat7 I wish I could do the same but you know what us Brits are like... to lazy and arrogant to learn other languages.
For that I can only say entschuldigung!
P.s. I do plan to learn German one day. I've been in love with the German language, country, people and culture since I met my first (real) girlfriend who was from Mecklanberg.
anyway, I don't really understand what's so beautiful with the german language...I mean, I live here and I've always spoken it, but then I think in the end, the english language is better in a way. You can just express yourself better and I think most of the time it sounds better, too. (And you just CANT have those horrible dialects we have here-that is my family speaking one of them!)
MecklEnbUrg. Course. Thanks for the correction. She moved to Berlin, for Uni, when I was with her so I ended spent a couple of months around Elisabethstraße and in an area East of the wall on another visit.
What's so beautiful about it? Nowt (nothing)! It certainly isn't beautiful!:-)
I dunno what it is. Don't forget, I'm a bit of a Deutschophile, so it could even sound like a Liverpool accent and I'd still love it!:-)
Remember, I don't speak it, so I'm only going from the sound.
It also seems to be one of the few languages that goes brilliantly with Rock music.
Not sure what you mean about German dialects. I wasn't aware of any. Do you mean, like Prussian, Bavarian, Saxony etc? Maybe DDR? Are they dialects or accents, though? Either way, don't forget, the UK not only has 4 home languages (more minor ones), plus dialects, like Newcastle, for example, uses some old Norse/Viking words), + UK has the most noticeably different accents per square mile in the World.
Actually, thinking about it, Germany having several dialects makes sense, considering her fascinating history, from tribal areas, through the Holy Roman Empire, through losing and gaining regions none stop (Alsace, Sudetanland, etc) right up to relatively recently. Plus sharing so many borders.
Yeah, I can understand that now (would appreciate some real info though, mate, if you have the time).
@Triplesod allright...maybe for you, it would sound all right, but honestly....ever heard someone from Bayern talking. I mean, i don't know what it would sound like for you, but certainly NOT beautiful or pretty or anything like that. Because to most Germans, it's just awful. well, I guess none of us can have the better arguments in that but it'S my opinion.
@Triplesod and the tihng about the beauty might just be the fact that nearly every german artist is completely incapable of singing or (espially!) writing songs and I'm just so in love with some english speaking singers' voices and there are so many wonderful songtext.
@quotecat7 No.. you're misunderstanding. Im saying I DONT think German is a beautiful language. Far from it. I think it's a wonderful language though but can't quite explain why.
I also said that German is one of few languages that DOES sound good when sung in Rock music.
I think Blixa Bargeld would be extremely upset to hear you speak like this about your shared language! :-)
Maybe we should stop posting in this thread now but feel free to send me a message, if you'd like.
I passed the skating park on the South Bank on my way to see Frankenstein! I got so excited! And on the way to Euston Station ready to go home, we passed 'Baker Street' aka North Gower street and I screamed in the cab when I saw Speedy's. That trip to London was such a Sherlock Holmes/Benedict Cumberbatch experience :)
@Taurus2May Thanks, I'm truly glad! I read up...no spoilers intended, but it's gonna tough to sit through & wait till then after ep. 3's massive cliffhanger!!!
@Taurus2May the director sir gave off 3 clues that i have already deduced, "Adler, Renchben, and hound" hound as in hound of baskerville. Adler as in Irena Adler. and Rechben (sorry for spelling) as in Rechenben falls were Holmes and Moryartie fought to the death.

At 3:50, how did they record their voices, was it all ADR? I didn't see any boom mics.

@fjrsm As I understand it, BBC does a LOT of ADR. I don't know if it's all ADR, though.
