I did TurboTax for the first time this year. I went with their "pro" and was pretty happy. Unless your return is massively complicated, you could probably do your own. Very user-friendly software. :) hope u feel btr.

My friend's accountant does her's for $50 and she ownes a house has child support and all that. But that is in Florida. This year my sister did it with turbo tax. Those places are a rip off but like you I did not want to do it!!

You really need to find a real accountant H&r block will cost you a fortune. not just in the bill but they miss deductions that are a litle iffy. I do go to H&R block. There is not a set fee, the charge is dependant on the complexity and how long it takes to do your taxes. If you can have taxes taken out each paycheck, it will be earier and cheaper at the end of the year.
I had the same kind of surprise from Jackson Hewitt. I have always done my own until this year. Lesson learned. The lady that did mine looked like she had not brushed her teeth in a few days and had her belt sinched up under her boobs. I will never pay to have my taxes done again.

Ah but the KEY to paying HRBLOCK to do your taxes is that next year you get to deduct THAT expense too - if you have it done by them next time - or ANYONE usually will honor tax preparation expenses. I've had mine done by them for probably 20 years. NEVER paid FEDS - paid state ONE time in that time. ALWAYS get money back. And they do better than I ever would - I hate this time of year. LYZ

Holy cow Zip that seems a bit steep to me - I use to go to a REAL accountant for about $200 - then I used Turbotax on line for years- never had a problem with big itemizations and it's very easy to go through and you can pause and go back as often as you like -for $79 !! Try it next year - I love it.

I LOVE Turbo Tax. I did them for the first time online and I got my returns, (I got money back, always nice)and it took less than a month for both. For someone with as complicated of taxes as you have... I am sure that one of your subscribers is a tax adjuster. I suggest locating, and making nice with these people.
DO NOT use H&R Block EVER! The same thing happened to my little sister. Almost all her refund went to them. I used a totally free service through the United Way that was held at my local library. I had to wait for three hours since there were a lot of people. But all my refund went back to me, it took twenty minutes to process, and it was an amazing feeling! I hope you feel better soon Zippy.
1. Unless you have a lot of other stuff to take off, the standard deduction is better than Sch A. (You mentioned they used your mortgage @ 700 they shouldn't have)
2. 400 buck is WAY TOO MUCH You probably could have gone to a real CPA and only paid 50-100.

My husband and I went to our own accountant and my husband had a business on the side, we ended up paying him $150 for both of us. Plus, the good ones, really know how to get more for you. Save some money and go with a software package that e-files next year. I used online services to netfile again this year and it cost less than $20 per return. I do my family's as well. It's easy - Just pop in the information from the slips, one by one, and it does the rest.
My mom does my taxes for me, so I don't pay a thing haha she works at one of those type of places during tax season so she does my taxes at home and I send 'em in.
When I had my Hair and Nail Salon I always paid every quarter and keep a dome record book of all my expenses and the accountant did not charge as much to do my taxes that way and I did not end up oweing a bunch at the end of the year either since I paid some along. Its bad enough to have to pay taxes but then to pay H&R $410.00 well that just sucks!

After Hurricane Wilma hit my Florida home, my taxes were very complicated that year. Major accountants with famous names were clueless. A manager of one of the H&R Block's in NY saved me. She was the only one who knew what to do. BTW, I paid less than Zippy.

I haven't been to H&R Block in years, and I'll never go back.
(It's worth it if you're a student though. I think they do them free for students, or at a really good discount.)

Zipster you're priceless! Now let me get right to my question. WHY DID THEY CHARGE YOU 410 DOLLARS? YIKES! I thought maybe 80 but 410? Does PA have different regulations than CA? I just need to get my taxes done too...Hopefully I don't have to call my Old Job that I hated so much. Oh geeesh.

I LOVE Turbo Tax. I did them for the first time online and I got my returns, (I got money back, always nice)and it took less than a month for both. For someone with as complicated of taxes as you have... I am sure that one of your subscribers is a tax adjuster. I suggest locating, and making nice with these people.

DO NOT use H&R Block EVER! The same thing happened to my little sister. Almost all her refund went to them. I used a totally free service through the United Way that was held at my local library. I had to wait for three hours since there were a lot of people. But all my refund went back to me, it took twenty minutes to process, and it was an amazing feeling! I hope you feel better soon Zippy.

1. Unless you have a lot of other stuff to take off, the standard deduction is better than Sch A. (You mentioned they used your mortgage @ 700 they shouldn't have)
2. 400 buck is WAY TOO MUCH You probably could have gone to a real CPA and only paid 50-100.

Goodness, Dear. Sorry to hear that. I have been told by many accountants to never go there. My husband and I went to our own accountant and my husband had a business on the side, we ended up paying him $150 for both of us. Plus, the good ones, really know how to get more for you. Next year, Terry...go to an accountant. Love you, good to hear you are feeling better. =-)

I wouldn't have paid it... that is ludicrous.
My taxes have been pretty plain and simple and I've been doing them myself. But come time next year, it will be a different story. I will have to pay taxes on all my blog earnings :(

Save some money and go with a software package that e-files next year. I used online services to netfile again this year and it cost less than $20 per return. I do my family's as well. It's easy - Just pop in the information from the slips, one by one, and it does the rest.

When I had my Hair and Nail Salon I always paid every quarter and keep a dome record book of all my expenses and the accountant did not charge as much to do my taxes that way and I did not end up oweing a bunch at the end of the year either since I paid some along. Its bad enough to have to pay taxes but then to pay H&R $410.00 well that just sucks!

I can understand Zippy wanting someone to hold his hand. Too bad they bit the hand.
After Hurricane Wilma hit my Florida home, my taxes were very complicated that year. Major accountants with famous names were clueless. A manager of one of the H&R Block's in NY saved me. She was the only one who knew what to do. BTW, I paid less than Zippy.
