There was no way to make any diversions. The ground the 54th crossed to get to the parapet of Fort Wagner was a very thin strip of land with the ocean on one side and an impassable swamp on the other. All other regiments wouldn't have had room to operate to save the 54th. A bombardment was also used by the Navy for days before the assault, but the fort's garrison hid in underground bunkers, so barely any damage was inflicted. Sadly, there was no way the 54th could've been helped.
Yes, unfortunately most of the island that Fort Wagner was built on is underwater. For all we know, Col. Shaw and his men now rest under 150 feet of water.
figures id say we should have a underwater team go down not touch nothing just show us what it look like , like the titanic and what they did for it and the people and pearl harbor
@GettysburgGhost1863 a couple other forts that are now under water is the Donelson campaign fort Donelson sufferd this summer a flooding of the upper river battery but Donelson is still above water level but fort Henry and heighmen is not sorry for the spelling i dont know how to spell the other fort

This movie is a hollywood garbage first of all it makes what the 54th did seem like they had to have there hand held by this white man who only put this regiment together so he could have a command I could see that he never believed in these men or what they did the actor who played the colonel was excellent he showed just how little faith that the man he pertraid had in his men.

no Robert Shaw only cared about advancement read his biography. if given the choice he would have rather served on the front lines with whites. No way of knowing but if his assault on Fort Wagner been a sucess and he lived he would have most likely been promoted to General and probably replaced Ambrose Burnsied as commander of the Army of the potomac. I glad this movie touched you but I am not a dreamer who finds meaning in hollywood garbage that thinly covers historical fact sorry.
Actually this movie is very accurate. I have read Robert Shaw's biography. You could interpert that he would rather have served with the white soldiers, but honestly consider the time period! These poor people were slaves for heaven's sake! There was of course going to be apprehension on the majority of white men's parts. The fact that he took the job was heroic enough because everyone was going to look at him as foolish. And this movie does not make it seem that he's "holding their hands"
(sorry I ran out of room) This movie, in my opinion, shows that Shaw had little to do with the regiment's success. And I also highly doubt that he would have replaced Burnside (Hooker was the clear choice since he had risen to the top of the publics' and Lincoln's interest.) Whatever you say there is no use trashing Glory or Shaw. Sure he probably wasn't a pure saint but what he did was pretty dang risky. And the fact that he lost his life for it makes him important.
It is true, he initially only accepted the commission so he could gain rank. In fact, he at first did not accept the commission the first time it was offered to him simply because he did not want to command negroes. But to the contrary, he soon took a liking to his men and eventually loved the 54th. Mastermonarch, you are about half right, but so is everyone else.
My heart like completely stopped when Robert was shot. But that doesnt stop this from being like my ultimate fav. movie i love it sooo much . o and awsome video too
I predicted he would die, but still held hope he wasn't. Oh well at least he went out like a HERO! I though Maj. Cabot(Shaws friend) would of survived to tell what happend. I can't beleive that happend and they lost the fort. Anyway I like your video it rocks!
This was fantastic! Glory is one of my all-time favorite movies. I personally prefer Gary Jules' version of "Mad World"-- find his voice matches the haunting feeling of the song better. Excellent work! :)
if u go into the army, i doubt they'll put u in action. i mean come on, when is the next war thats gonna happen thats big?maybe world war 3, but whos know when that will happen. but it will, over oil. and america will probably win ww3, becuase very few countrys appose us. they dont have the power to do anything either. but lets say they banded together.. well that would be like a pesky annoying bug.

One of the 54th men received the medal of honor for finding the national flag (American flag), the regimental was captured by the Confederates. It truly was a disaster, the Union lost 1,511 men and the South lost 174 men. OR report. The poor 54th lost 50% of their men. The 6th Conn also lost 50%. The ironic thing was there were black Confederates in the fort.
This movie was the best movie of civil war I ever seen. It was sad though, it was good because it got 8.0 ratings out of 10. Best movie! It really touched my heart, and I think they all did a good job!
